  1. The problem on offense imo was at SS & C. Like Casey noted, speed is way overrated.
  2. So the Mets didn't get Piniero... which means I have to agree even more with JohnBriggs that they sign Sheets.
  3. Excellent signing by Melvin. Davis at right around $5M could wind up being a steal.
  4. No, I think team do subtle things like that quite a bit in their logos. I actually really love that kind of stuff, so nice catch on the inclusion of red. I'd overlooked that.
  5. There's a thread on Sheets, & this angle of his offseason, in the Transactions Forum http://forum.brewerfan.net/viewtopic.php?t=21227
  6. While Hernandez may have left money on the table, he's out of this contract at age 28 & will definitely be able to secure another huge payday as long as he doesn't suffer any poorly-timed injury.
  7. I get the feeling that (what I've been suspicious is) Close's & Sheets' plan has worked out pretty well so far. 1) Demand a significant amount more than the other one-year, high-upside injury reclamation guys (Harden, Bedard) 1a) Incumbent upon the assertion that Sheets will be fully ready to go by Opening Day 2) Sheets works his butt off to be absolutely, positively 100% ready for his throwing session 3) Look very good in throwing session; physical conditioning ahead of where he'd normally be by ST time 4) Guarantee you're in the $7M/$8M/$9M range instead of $5M/$6M, since now at $8M, your asking price has 'come down' I dunno, I could just be all full of hot air, but I felt initially that the $12M-ish asking price was just a negotiating tactic. It all sounded crazy when Sheets wasn't physically able to throw (along with his assertion that he'd be 100% ready to go come OD), but after the seemingly successful session, he's probably got a lot of suitors.
  8. Apparently, the Mets didn't insure the Beltran contract. Peter Gammons notes...
  9. In the end Hardy was moved as his lowest possible value This is an argument you've made before. Perhaps I just haven't retained your answer, but if you trade Hardy after 2008, who is your starting shortstop for the Brewers in 2009? I don't mean "you" generically, in the hypothetical sense. Who do you, GM Crew07, specifically (ie by name) bring in to play SS fulltime for '09, a season in which the Brewers were trying to compete for the division & Wild Card? I apologize if this comes across as hostile... not my intent whatsoever -- I just want to pick your brain. Heading into 2009 (not in hindsight now), with no way of knowing that Hardy would hit at or below replacement level, what SP-via-Hardy-trade + SS combo do you feel would have been a notable upgrade from keeping Hardy at SS (who I think it's fair to say just about everyone expected to OPS around .800) + signing Looper (who pitched well below expectations last season as best I can tell).
  10. Wow, thanks for posting those, pretendastronaut
  11. What if Cain or Schafer takes off and Gomez flops going into 2011? We've essentially flipped one of the better SS in the game for...? I realize that's a worst case scenario from a Gomez... Well, yeah. What if Cain gets hurt again & Schafer can't hit past AA? Then we've made a nice, high-upside acquisition for CF who's only 24 & already a premium defender. You can't evaluate personnel moves in worst-case scenario 'what ifs' imo. And if all three guys do well in 2010, the Brewers have the 'problem' of having too many good CFs, which will be valuable ammo on the trade front. What would have been wrong with a stop gap CF as Cameron initially was meant to be? Obviously the team needed the money to spend on pitching. Of course you object to that as well, but that's what happened this offseason.
  12. I agree completely with your last sentence, TWR. He was actually above average in the field in the short time he played last year. Going by UZR/150, he wasn't just above average, he was spectacular -- a rating of 21.9. For reference's sake, Chase Utley's UZR/150 at 2B for the past five seasons were 11.3, 21.4, 21.0, 10.2, 17.1
  13. A Jon Heyman Tweet confirms 5/$78M
  14. http://forum.brewerfan.net/viewtopic.php?t=20937 http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  15. Melvin doesn't hint that exactly. Here's the excerpt: Oh, and Melvin doesn't let us "freaking geeks" down... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  16. Fielder, even with a huge contract extension, is still very trade-able. There is just no way I can see that a shorter 'long-term' deal would be a bad idea for the Brewers.
  17. Link As best I can tell, no more details yet aside from that it's a multi-year deal.
  18. And for those of you who don't habla Español, "El Niño" is Spanish for... "the Niño"
  19. I think Gerut's better used in being the 4th OF, since like Ennder noted, we have an all-RH starting OF. And I agree with him on Gomez's defense... and really want to agree that Gomez improved. I sure hope he has & will -- fwiw, Gomez's CHONE projection is .267/.329/.390/.719. Add in a little luck and/or progression, and .340/.425/.765 isn't all that far off. That offense combined with his spectacular defense would be of immense value.
  20. I'd rather have Gerut at $2M, especially since he can actually handle all three OF positions
  21. Fielder 2009 WAR: 6.8 Cameron 2009 WAR: 4.3 Hoffman 2009 WAR: 1.5 Hoffman + Cameron = 5.8 WAR... so you're right. They didn't have half the value of Fielder, they had more than half. 85.3%, to be more precise.
  22. Even still, I think getting Fielder at ~$20M AAV is a better use of money than overpaying mediocre FAs to come in & be average. I wonder if a deal like 4 yrs./$85M would work for both sides. For the Brewers, you theoretically avoid his 'decline' years... for Prince, he gets paid big-time, with enough gas left in the tank to secure another monster FA contract.
  23. As long as he can be ready to go around OD, I'd love to see the Brewers throw an incentive-laden deal at Bedard. However, I think just about every franchise with $5M guaranteed to spare is thinking the same thing.
  24. I agree Invader. What is the appeal of this guy? I have to think it's just the 'I know his name' thing, like with Mark Prior.
  25. Just came across this gem on another fan forum... http://i655.photobucket.com/albums/uu273/areacode212/mets_flow_chart.png
