  1. The Oregon Brewers Festival kicks off today. Really looking forward to it, even though the temperatures are going to be routinely over 90 degrees. Beer List -- another amazing roster this year
  2. I actually don't want to sign Hardy long-term, as I believe he could be moved at any point for a solid young SP. I would rather fill SS with glove-first guys that would hit down in the order if it meant Escobar went to TOR as part of a Halladay deal. If that doesn't happen & Escobar stays with the Crew, I would still want to see Hardy traded for pitching.
  3. Worth reading the comments...the hatred for the Brewers in Pittsburgh is pretty funny.Yeah, they really seem to hate the Brewers, Fielder, and (as they call him) Cryin' Ryan Braun

  5. His recent injury had nothing to do with his arm, so I wouldn't worry too much about that Yes, his most recent injury was to his ankle, but imo monty is correct in labeling Peavy as a bigger injury risk than Halladay. The amount of Peavy's contract relative to Suppan is irrelevant. Peavy's still a very big risk for a team like the Brewers.
  6. Let's just keep this in the escobar/gamel thread. It's not like you haven't read what I've posted there http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  7. Talking about WAR is one thing, throwing arbitrary dollar figures is another. Look around the league, how many players are actually paid their value according to the website? I dunno... people are just ripping Hardy without any real research into it. I thought providing the Fangraphs estimate would be a useful objective tool. I guess not. 2009 is more on par. 5 million would be about where I'd go per year, and I'd rather just move him if he could get us a decent starter and go with Escobar. No -- Hardy has been worth that $5.8M so far this season. Even with an atrocious offensive line, his value by the Fangraphs system for a full season is nearing $10M. Imho there's a disconnect here in that people seem to assume players that are hot will never cool off, and players that are cold won't return to their hitting norms. The Bill Hall--Hardy comparison for doesn't work at all for me, especially since JJ's defense is so strong. To be fair TLB, Escobar would have similar value due to his defense. Elvis Andrus, a player often compared to Escobar, is valued at $6.1 mil by fangraphs this year despite a .654 OPS. Escobar is likely to have similar value next year based just off his defense. True... however I think it's a helpful point to note that Escobar's value is similar to Hardy's when JJ has roughly the worst hitting season of his career. That's the kind of difference between the two as offensive players. If you have Hardy at career norms in terms of hitting, even Escobar's spectacular D probably doesn't close the gap.
  8. Unfortunately, other teams don't value Hardy as much as some Brewers fans do, otherwise we might have been able to trade him already. I'm really enjoying this huge second half that Hardy is having. Hardy will not be a good hitter again until he figures out he needs to make adjustments just like opposing pitchers have done with him. I just fast-forward his AB's on my DVR. It's far too painful to watch.I can assure you that scouting departments aren't scared off in the slightest by Hardy's 2009. As Ennder pointed out in another thread, his BABIP is low enough that if you 'normalize' it, you see a line that very much looks like a Hardy line (something like .280/.330/.4XX/.750-.800). Would other teams look to use Hardy's rough 2009 as leverage? You bet, but it just wouldn't affect things the way some around here are claiming.
  9. Fangraphs estimated his monetary value as follows -- 2007: $18.6M 2008: $22.2M And so far in 2009 they have him worth $5.8M. Sometimes I think people don't really understand just how valuable guys like Cameron & Hardy actually are.
  10. Last update I saw from the Disabled List Informer blog was that Lowell will need regular time off. Neault even speculated in his post that the BoSox should add a 1B type, so he was spot-on.

  12. I just don't think he either wants to, tries to, or whatever. He just doesn't do it. He offered Sabathia an extension in the neighborhood of $100M -- what else can a guy do?
  13. That's a big bat to get back for CWS, the Gordon return is obviously big for KC, and the news on Reyes is just another kick to the pants for the Mets this season. It will also be interesting to see what comes of Hernandez's injury.
  14. Not to mention that LaRoche will see a big dip in his PT. I will be interested to see what PIT got back for him.

  16. Fortunately for the Brewers scouting departments don't evaluate players like fans do. I'd have to guess that both Hardy & Hart still have good value... heck, Hart's even been displaying why lately.
  17. One thing to keep in mind is that the Lopez deal was made largely because of McGehee's & Counsell's knee WOAHs. So, imho, it's that Lopez was acquired *because* McGehee can't play much now, not that McGehee is losing out on PT because Melvin brought in Lopez.
  18. Agreed, except that LaPorta clearly was one that could have moved all along. I took that stuff from Melvin on LaPorta just like the "I'm not motivated to move [Overbay]" line.
  19. Not cool. The cast without those voice performers will almost literally be 100% turned over. Not cool. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  20. "Dave Kurwin"...now that's hilarious. I have to ask (& possibly further expose my own idiocy)... why? A pitcher almost breaks into tears after being hit on his non-pitching arm, and doesn't know what to do Almost breaks into tears? Doesn't know what to do? Did you even watch the game? Karstens was pissed about being drilled, and if you read his lips, he basically asked, 'What was the point of that?' ... Not that I agree with him, but still. Your 'representation' of the events in question was off-base at best.
  21. Does Gamel know something about trades in the talks or am i reading way to much into the comments and Gamels just exuding confidence. From the 'Melvin on WSSP' thread, Doug expects that McGehee will need surgery in the offseason. However, I think the better answer is probably that Gamel just knows he is legit & will be back soon.
  22. and his pitch selection is getting worse instead of better Unless this can be proven, I think it's best to assume this is just fan frustration as opposed to fact.
  23. I agree with SoCal BCF -- Gamel will probably be back soon. And if the context of the Lopez acquisition was that Casey might need to be shut down at some point this season, then my vote on that trade changes from "unnecessary" to "well-played, Melvin". Viva la Gamel!
  24. Fwiw, the PIT tv announcers talked about Snell during today's game, & they too basically said he will be traded relatively soon. Seems like Snell is the perfect/obvious 'buy low' candidate. I'm guessing the package the Brewers sent to ARZ (Gillespie + Mercedes) would easily net Snell.
