  1. Took this from the 'DeRosa to STL' thread.
  2. I mentioned in a Transactions Rumors thread that Eric Bedard will be making his first start back from injury tonight. He will face BAL at home, and (per Bedard) will have a pitch count around 75. Neault also noted Aramis Ramirez's return to the Cubs lineup yesterday (he went 0-4)
  3. Thanks for that update, jjfan. I slacked on this thread a bit over the weekend.
  4. Shapiro wants major league ready arms, we don't have that. I think you're forgetting Manny Parra
  5. I feel that calling every deal Melvin has swung a rental isn't being fair. Additionally, brushing off the Peavy rumors as "just [rumors]"does a discredit to Melvin & the way that situation actually unfolded. Of course I will never know if that deal actually was on the brink, but the Pads & Brewers matched up pretty darn well. While I will acknowledge that Peavy has health concerns (as does any pitcher), I guess I don't have as much doubt in the value he'd bring for the Crew -- at worst an equal of Gallardo. I guess one reason I side with Melvin on this spat is that Braun called out his own teammates, and basically the entire scouting department of the Brewers. Aside from his criticism that the team hasn't made a move soon enough, there's a note in the JSOnline article about Braun claiming the Brewers didn't have a scouting report on a recent rookie SP. It seems that Melvin tends to not mind players jawing & acting imperfectly, but treading on his scouting department might be sort of sacred ground.
  6. You cannot plug a hole in the rotation 1 year at a time. To be fair, the Brewers reportedly made a contract offer over $100M to Sabathia. It's not like they didn't try to keep him around longer than half of a season. My biggest fear is that Melvin will keep doing the FA thing with stop gaps so the team never really gets over the hump and that there will always be that temptation to push the young pitchers faster than they should. And the SP the Brewers were rumored to be looking at this year are/were Peavy -- obv. not a rental -- & Bedard. Clearly Bedard is/was a fallback option, and a rental too... but part of the appeal is not having to give up an elite prospect price... and still getting a likely Type A FA out of the deal. I don't think it's reasonable to start discussing Melvin like all he goes out to do in deals is get rental players & turn them into draft picks.
  7. Just as a general point of information, Eric Bedard will make his first start returning from injury tomorrow, and will be operating on a pitch count "around 75" (per Bedard). For folks who've been following all the SP speculation on this forum, this would be a game to make sure to watch (if possible). Bedard will face Baltimore & SP Jeremy Guthrie.
  8. W/O free agency, he would've went nowhere in Texas. If only we had some tangible example, a track record of success you might say, where Doug Melvin had constructed a team largely without Free Agency.
  9. Russell doesn't slump... he waits
  10. Weeks played CF in college.
  11. I think he was saying the Brewers also spent money to keep one of the better CF's in the game around. I could be wrong though. Ack. Reading comprehension. Sorry, snyttri -- good point back there http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/embarassed.gif
  12. They also paid big money to keep Cameron on the team which they didn't have to do. You would prefer the Brewers had not retained one of the best CF in baseball? Cameron even at his 2009 salary is one of the best bang-for-your-buck players in the entire league, and exercising his option imo was a total no-brainer. EDIT: From the JSOnline article trwi7 linked... Wow. Good for you, Doug.
  13. Comparing Gamel to Braun at 3B is a disservice to both players. Gamel actually has the skills to turn himself into a plus defender at 3B. But I don't want to just dismiss the Gamel-->OF notion. If the best way for the Brewers to compete is with Gamel at LF or RF, then I hope they go with that plan. Imho however the best plan is to not move Gamel's bat off 3B. Rickie Weeks is a perfect example of how waiting for tools to come together can pay off.
  14. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/50052147.html My initial reaction is to say, 'Phew!' ... but then I remember the frequency of Doug-Davis-to-MIL talk.
  15. I think you could possibly see Pujols shift over to 3B in order to accomodate Fielder, but I'd seriously doubt him playing any other position.
  16. Now Doug can understand it, and hopefully take your advice, Joe http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif As for Davis, peripherals are fine and dandy, but they don't account for guys ability to handle pressure situations. A veteran like Davis will be more consistent, and thus perhaps a lower ERA. Davis surprisingly has a better OPS-A against righties this year than lefties. I don't think his ERA is all smoke and mirrors. While I can agree Davis may be more skillful at working out of jams than some pitchers, I don't think adding a 4-4.5 ERA pitcher is the kind of move the Brewers should be investing in at this point. While that kind of pitcher is certainly an upgrade over the likes of McClung/Burns/etc., I'd rather see the Brewers wait a little longer & go after that "frontline SP" we've heard mentioned.
  17. I think that Taylor Green would like to be seen as "remotely close to Mat's talent". If he can stay off the DL. Very true. I was under the impression the long-term idea for Taylor was 2B, though I guess Lawrie was the reason for that change?
  18. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Sorry... didn't want to be a jerk about it. My first thought was just, 'I thought he hurt his knee this past weekend' (Jerry, that is)
  19. Maybe edit the thread title, since Scott's brother Jerry plays for the Reds (aside from the spelling error)
  20. But my beef is that 'sooner is better than later' is also Captain Obvious territory. And no one has even pointed to the fact that the Brewers were rumored to have 3 pitchers targeted to seriously improve this club via trade... the same week Jake Peavy, Roy Halladay, & Eric Bedard went down with injuries. What were you doing Melvin! Get out there & prevent those kinds of injuries or make way for someone who can! This can be one of those situations where some would be critical if he didn't say something because then he wouldn't be "showing leadership." I guess I would argue that at this point, showing leadership would be keeping your mouth shut.
  21. Unless Melvin could work a miracle & trade Hall... yes, I think that's correct davego.
  22. Vaccinator: any chance we can see some pooch pics?
