  1. She doesn't like the taste in fashion & was making a joke about it... and she addressed that in this thread MJLiverock, your last post makes me question whether I should have even started this thread. I really like Braun as a player, and I can understand how constant criticism (valid or not) can be frustrating, but I was just trying to have some fun. I'm also a big Yankees fan, but should I not make fun of Jeter's corny cologne commercials (holy alliteration!) because he's captain and receives a huge amount of criticism about his defense? I'm sorry it didn't come across that way in my first post, but I was not criticizing his baseball abilities or his personality, and I do support any player ventures. Post #47
  2. Good memory, brewtank. I remember thinking RyDogg had made a solid post at the time... looks downright 'Nostradomical' at this point http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  3. Yeah, after re-reading what Richie posted, I see what he meant. Where I took "--and that name was specifically mentioned", to mean, 'this name has been mentioned already in rumors' ... what he actually meant was that he, himself (Richie), had a name specifically mentioned to him. In either event, it's just really exciting to know that both Plan A & Plan B are front-line starters.
  4. I'd really like to hear you qualify these points with more than just, "Because I said so!"
  5. Oh. and it's not Babe Ruth Dangit! I'm going to be vague because I didn't get the information firsthand, but the source is legit. What I have heard is the Brewers already have a deal in place to acquire a starter and if that deal falls through it will be someone else--and that name was specifically mentioned. The main thing to take from this is that the organization is very actively pursuing a frontline starter from what I've heard. I will say it's not Clay Buchholz (at least that's not a name I heard). Excellent info, Richie, and thanks for sharing... those kinds of specifics are what we go crazy to see. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif EDIT: What I have heard is the Brewers already have a deal in place to acquire a starter and if that deal falls through it will be someone else--and that name was specifically mentioned. The way I read this is that Jake Peavy is the fall-back option. Am I getting ahead of myself? Because that's just downright exciting.
  6. So after all the attention Selena Robert's book about A-Rod drew it has been a fizzle with the fans. Even with all the hype and A-Rod's supposed larger than life stature it has sold a whopping 16,000 copies including 11,000 during the first week. (The first printing was 150,000 copies). The book ranks 2,904th on Amazon.com according to the article and a bookstore in midtown Manhattan says they have only sold 2 copies and the Grand Cental Station book store says they sold 27 but none for 2 weeks. Serves her right. It's just good to see that the consumer public isn't interested in someone 'reporting' on allegations & anonymous sources. Perhaps if Roberts hadn't shattered her own credibility by running as sensationalistic as possible with the phony Duke lacrosse allegations, people would find her claims in this book more interesting & relevant.
  7. Just reading some of the recent replies sums up how JJ is looked at. Saying he has hit the ball hard and blah blah and its more than just stats 'Blah blah blah' is discouting facts & saying, "I know 'cuz I've seen it". Honestly not sure how anyone can have watched the season to this point & even begin to think that Hardy has been as bad in his approach as Hall & Hart (or that J.J. hasn't been hitting the ball hard... what?). Like has been posted, Hardy has been negatively impacted mostly by bad luck. Hart & Hall have been negatively impacted by poor approaches & lack of plate discipline.
  8. It's Babe Ruth, isn't it? I totally knew, it... we're trading Corey Hart for Babe Ruth.
  9. But I'd put "above average shortstop" JJ Hardy as opposed to "All Star shortstop" JJ Hardy when talking about the guy. I think that when you compare him against other SS over the past few seasons, you find that "above average" is not a good descriptor for Hardy. "All-Star SS" is kind of an arbitrary term (much like "GG defender"), since there are a lot of factors not related to talent that go into those selections... and to get technical it's saying a player is one of the top 2 or 3 SS in his league in any given season. So while I agree that perhaps "All-Star SS" isn't the right way to describe J.J., I think you're selling him short in going with "above average". if Alcides steals 15+ bases or so in that time and bats .240 we could have a better player. We all know about the argument about defense and who's more likely better..etc My main concern right now is that I don't believe that Escobar would be a net improvement over Hardy for the rest of this season. I think that one of Escobar/Weeks/Hardy will be dealt this coming offseason, and my money is on J.J.
  10. Wow, now why'd you have to go & get us all excited like that, Brian!
  11. Shouse = Kyle Heckathorn That might wind up being the best 'comp pick player value' to 'departed FA player value' ratio in some time if the posters that think Heckathorn's delivery can be ironed out are correct. Front-of-rotation potential for letting an aging LOOGY walk? Yes, please.
  12. I really dislike these types of articles. If you're going to write "UW needs baseball" tell us how they are supposed to balance title IX and pay for everything, beyond hinting at "Former Alums should donate money". So what you're asking him to do is turn out more than some random angry fan-blog entry? What do you think he is, a journalist or something? Oh.
  13. From what I can find, he doesn't have a no trade clause and his average fastball is 90.6 according to fangraphs. Sorry, my comment was based off of watching him in his past two starts. I won't claim to have watched every pitch, but was surprised by how often RJ wasn't even posting 90 on the gun.
  14. "I feel with the selection of Eric Arnett, we took the best player available," said scouting director Bruce Seid, conducting his first draft for the Brewers. "He is someone that will be a great fit in our organization and will make us better as a whole." Gotta love that quote & situation for the Brewers. So far, between interviews & this first draft, I'm really a fan of Seid.
  15. I think the Cubs have a nice set of complementary bats in their lineup (esp. Fontenot, but also Theriot, Fukudome, & Johnson), but for me it's the obvious three -- Ramirez, Soriano, & Lee. Soto is somewhere in-between those two levels, and should probably have a pretty nice career barring any major injuries. What confuses me most, however, is still the trading away of DeRosa. He fit nicely just at or above the 'complementary' guys I noted above, and can play all over the diamond. Hendry really dropped the ball on that move imho. If he'd gotten something that made sense, I wouldn't find the move as perplexing.
  16. He's not great, but he's certainly not the worst defensive OF in the league... that was my only point.
  17. Davis isn't fat, and he isn't a low-upside pick. He's a pretty promising offensive performer that is built unusually short and thick...but definitely not fat. He has good bat speed as X noted and has 20 HR power and enough speed to steal 30 bases and leg out both doubles and triples. He has been somewhat bothered by injuries during his career, and he isn't really considered a CF. I have mentioned this before, but he's very similar to a LH hitting version of Shannon Stewart. Physically he sounds similar to Kirby Puckett, which iirc someone already mentioned in this thread. I know you compared Davis to Shannon Stewart, Patrick, but saying, 'a LH hitting version of Shannon Stewart' and '20 HR power' mixes me up a bit. The 20 HR power bit makes me wonder if comparing him to Puckett is maybe a bit accurate, even if using it only as a way to say, 'If he reaches his upside...' I have to chime in as the Nth poster to just gush over Day One. Arnett in the first round is awesome (when BA announced the pick during yesterday's game I just thought 'Patrick nailed it!'), and it sounds like Heckathorn is a bit of a risk-reward scenario that some very well-informed posters here think is a good gamble. Congrats so far to Seid & his people... seems like the Brewers aren't even missing a beat after losing three of their top talent evaluators this past offseason. That's amazing, imho.
  18. Hawpe is the worst defensive OF in the game...yes, even worse than Dunn. I take it you've missed plenty of games for him like tonight then.
  19. I wonder if between drafting LaPorta & extending Prince, the Brewers feel like they can work with Boras Are people excited about Davis if there were no signability concerns?
  20. I know at almost any level of umpiring, you are coached to make your visible call(s) clear & easily identifiable (like not just casually raising your fist up to shoulder-level to call a bang-bang play at 1B)... but something tells me the more demonstrative stike-3 calls could be toned down a notch without losing effect http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  21. I think the point about people paying to see umpires is true, but I've never seen an umpire act as if that is true. I just want to whole-heartedly agree with this, and say that the vast majority of the time the notion that an ump is out to 'put on a show' is just hogwash. Your opinions are insightful, but please dont try and create a perception that umpires think the game is all about them and a majority are arrogant...that couldn't be further from the truth. Totally agree, and I think this might be a case of a few (very visible) bad apples ruining the whole bushel for some.
  22. People don't pay to see umpires. They pay to see players. Cameron lost his cool when the umpire didn't keep his. Cam, along with several other Brewers, were complaining for basically the whole game. This time -- the umpteenth time in that game -- Cam didn't do it without showing up the umpire. I don't agree with everything that's gone against Cam here, but let's be fair to the ump. He was listening to complaints all game long... Cam objecting the way he did to a pretty good pitch seemed like the last straw for the ump. So, to clarify, the ump was "able to take it" until it just became a bit ridiculous.
  23. I have to agree with Invader. Fwiw, RJ's heater tops out at around 89-90 mph these days.
  24. First of all, Hardy has been a major disappointment this season offensively. A .669 OPS is not what I envisioned him having when he was tearing up Arizona. Opposing pitchers have figured out he will consistently take mediocre first pitch fastballs down the heart of the plate and they keep getting ahead of him in the count. True, he's likely to have a hot streak at some point Like the .888 OPS he posted in May?
  25. Even moreso, I believe he's a good enough defender to play CF. I couldn't disagree more. I think he's adequate at a corner spot, but I really wouldn't want to see him in CF.
