  1. I heart Doug Melvin. Great work, Doug. Going for on one year makes the contract so much more valuable. Totally agree. This deal is a great fit for both parties, and honestly I'm surprised Hoff chose the Crew over the Dodgers.
  2. This offseason is really turning into a nightmare. You've been saying this since November, bklyn. it seems the brewers are atleast making a stronger push for Trevor. I think if we have to guarantee a 2nd year to get him, we should... Definitely agreed... however, I wonder if even guaranteeing a second season would be enough. Honestly if you look at this situation without wearing Brewers goggles, it would make tons of sense for Hoffman to sign with LA, even if it's only a one year deal & the Crew offers two years.
  3. If Hudson came relatively cheap, and the Yankees are ready to offer something of value for Cameron, and the Brewers commit to Weeks in CF, then I agree Hudson would be a good target. Imo that's a lot of stuff that'd have to fall into place, though.

  6. Would the Crew even have to go to 2 years? I hope we can ink him to a one-year deal, personally.
  7. I really think that getting Weeks off leadoff duty would help his production. Perhaps not by at ton, but it certainly seems that letting Rickie swing away more freely couldn't hurt his approach. In some ways, it's a shame to let such a powerful bat take so many pitches... but at this point I have to wonder if that's the Brewers telling Weeks, 'Hey, be a leadoff guy & take pitches', or if it's just his own approach at the plate at this point.
  8. Felix Pie is out of options as well, but he was optioned down to AAA last season -- does that mean the Cubs can keep him there for the time being? They certainly have some interesting choices in terms of what to do with their OF.
  9. I'm just getting started in a new league using OOTP 9 (I'm in two other OOTP 6.5 leagues already), and am anxious to see how it 'plays'. I'm optimistic that they've fixed many of the obnoxious 6.5 glitches without losing too many positive attributes. Is anyone familiar with both 6.5 & 9 that would like to share some of the plusses & minuses of going to v.9?
  10. Ditto, BCin'04. Burrell appears to be a great fit in Tampa. I love the work Friedman has done (& continues to do) as their GM.
  11. I'll toss mine out into the fray, with the disclaimer that I haven't seen any of these guys play, and that by no means do I think I know what I'm talking about: 1. Mat Gamel 2. Alcides Escobar 3. Jeremy Jeffress 4. Angel Salome 5. Taylor Green 6. Jonathan Lucroy 7. Brett Lawrie 8. Lorenzo Cain 9. Jacob Odorizzi 10. Brent Brewer 11. Evan Fredrickson 12. Caleb Gindl 13. Seth Lintz 14. Cutter Dykstra 15. Cole Gillespie 16. Hernan Iribarren 17. Cody Adams 18. Alex Periard 19. R.J. Seidel 20. Luis Pena Just your typical fan blabber, I suppose... Clancy sure sounds like he knows these guys a heckuva lot better than me, and not surprisingly our lists don't look too similar.
  12. TLB, how where the beers? Worth the hoopla and the wait? It was great to taste some good old' WI brews again. The Capital Oktoberfest was very good (my first sip of it made me take a deep sigh & just say, 'Ahhhh'), as was the New Glarus Staghorn Oktober. Of course the superstar was the Dancing Man Wheat. Ok. I get it now. That beer is freaking great. I'm not really much of a weisse fan, and -- dang -- I want summorra that beer. Outstanding! So, thanks again, fstorm... karma will catch you back on that soon enough. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I picked some Josephs Brau Winterfest at Trader Joe's (B grade from the users at beeradvocate.com). Iirc this is a Trader Joe's brew, not just one they happen to carry. Very good winter brew. 7.5% ABV. It pours great, and is a dark beer -- a double bock. Even so, if I had to describe it, one adjective I'd use is 'light'. It's not a very creamy beer, so I'm really referring to the texture. I just recall other winter brews this season having a 'bigger' feel to them than this one does. Very nice aroma, and heavy on the malt. The description on the bottle cites "Munich & caramel malts". Definitely a win at $5.99/6-pk. Oh, and one more thing -- I noticed that Trader Joe's has their 2008 Vintage Ale back for sale. I know there are some that have commented in this thread (NeedMoreFans I think was one) on how much they enjoy that brew. $4.99 for the big aging bottle was the price I saw today... and they noted you could age the beer up to 7 years. Interesting thought.
  13. Rickie gets to so many balls that it helps reduce the damage he inflicts with the frying-pan glove routine. By most metrics he was about an average 2B defender last season, iirc.
  14. Because 2008 was a fluke for Miles. That's what he tried to explain in that post.
  15. I'm sure the dollars out there are much, much higher for a starter as compared to a reliever, so it's no surprise that's what he favors. I agree with the sentiment that Big Red profiles pretty well as a closer.
  16. Hope things are ok for you & yours, hawing. My/our thoughts are with you.
  17. If Harden manages to stay healthy the entire year it will probably still be an upgrade over last season That Harden/Gaudin pickup was a great trade imo. Sure, Harden has injury concerns, but no pitcher doesn't (even if his are stronger than most). When he's healthy, he's an awesome performer.
  18. Who are the shortstops whose range is so much better? Rollins, and a few others, but it ain't like Hardy has telephone booth range. Oh, very true. I think you're talking about a very small number of SS that are better defensively than J.J. ... but complicatedly enough, one of them is probably Escobar http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  19. Half of the bullpen you mentioned has less than 31 innings of MLB experience. Who cares? All that means is you don't know their names, which seems to make you quite uncomfortable. We have several good bullpen arms, who I already listed. Cwolf made a great post, so I won't bother repeating. One thing that's being left out is that Riske's production was hampered by his injury, so it's not a very good indicator imo of what to expect. And you feel comfortable with this group?? Yup.
  20. Which is why I don't like ZR, RZR, or OOZ. They seem to show the opposite to be true. I am not saying those stats are not objective, just that they don't properly account for shifts.I don't think people should overlook things like OOZ/ZR/RZR (which is NOT what logan is suggesting). I just think that, objectively, Hardy is a fine defender, Yes, he doesn't get to every groundball, but yikes... anything he gets to, he turns into an out. It is confusing, though... OOZ/ZR/RZR seems to be infallbile, but certainly... defensive shifting isn't taken into account in those metrics...
  21. Please explain to me how anyone can think this bullpen is in good shape when Villy is the only guy you can reasonably count on and even he is far from a sure thing. For starters, the bullpen is the same if not better than last season... but omg I know, no one knows any names from the 'pen. Honestly, what's the big deal? Dillard/Stetter/Villy/McClung/DiFelice/Riske is a really great set of bullpen options.
  22. He's a great fielder on balls he can get to. His failing is that he doesn't get to as many balls as the elite defenders at SS. I love Hardy's defense at SS, fwiw.
  23. And that's a good thing????? Well it's certainly not a bad thing. Regardless of what some may lead you to believe, our bullpen was fine last season. It could have been better, sure, but it wasn't some huge achilles heel for the Crew last season. Torres wasn't so good last season that he's irreplaceable. Our depth is probably going to be better for 2009, we'll be rid of Gagne, and Riske should return to career norms after the injury. This was the year to grab legit closers on the cheap. Unfortunately, Melvin has whiffed badly. So Melvin is supposed to sign some FA SP(s) & a closer, all with very little wiggle room? Where are you imagining this payroll room is coming from?I know it's easier to harp on supposed failings, but the far greater priority right now is the starting rotation. The bullpen as presently constituted will be fine imo for 2009.
  24. This bullpen as currently constitued is garbage and we really need to improve it. I know you're pessimistic and all, but that statement isn't even close to true. At this point our bullpen is probably right about as good as it was last season, and if someone like Dillard steps up, it could well be better. McClung had a nice year last year but I am in the boat of believing that this was more of a fluke than anything and he seemed to struggle when he was in the pen as opposed to being a starter. **Disclaimer: a 'seems like' statement follows: I thought that McClung really tried to overthrow his FB more as a reliever, and the gruntball is where he loses his control imho. As long as the coaching staff can keep him throwing within his talents/abilities, I think he'd do fine as a reliever.
  25. Miles OPS+ in 2008: 99. Miles BABIP in 2008: .343 First season in his career that he batted over .290, and he nearly hit .320. Now Briggs, I hope you're not going to argue that he's suddenly become a .320 batter, because that's about what he has to hit (given his low BB rate & lack of power) to provide anything more than marginal value (as Ennder noted). The Cubs just overpaid for at best mediocrity & in all likelihood a replacement-level player.
