  1. Can you elaborate or provide a link?
  2. Just stumbled across this snippet from Tangotiger at The Book blog ("Who Should Switch Positions?"): Finally, #5 is Rickie Weeks. A guy whose value is tied up in his legs, and has little value with his arm must be moved to the OF. Last year, I argued, pre-Mike Cameron, that Braun should move to RF, Weeks to LF, and slide Hart to CF. With the acquisition of Cameron, only one of those moves was required. If Weeks has no home in the OF for the Brewers, then either he or Hart has to go. It just makes no sense to continue the Weeks experiment in the IF. Thoughts?
  3. Ha! That's awesome. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I played T.F.U. a bit & didn't catch that at all
  4. Horrible (imo) signing for StL. What a waste of funds. I'd love to know the odds on Lohse sustaining 2008 performance for all 4 years of this deal. From The Book blog, here's MGL's (Mitchell Lichtman) take: I think they paid almost twice what he is worth... I have him projected an 1.5 WAR next year, 1.2 after that, then .9, and then .6. That comes out to a fair contract of about 4/22. 4/41 is ugly... Here is the really interesting thing though. At the beginning of the season, he was really undervalued (for some strange reason). They basically picked him up for a song. He also basically pitched this year about the way you would have expected him to pitch, maybe a little better. So why wait until he is overvalued to sign him to a 4 yr deal? Why didn't you (STL) sign him to a 3, 4, or 5 year deal before the season started? He is no less of a risk now than he was after last year. In fact, less so, as he is one year older. They could have gotten him for half that at the beginning of the season, I assume. If you are a team that is presumably smart, but you are going to occasionally sign FA pitchers to long term deals which you probably shouldn't, then you should make those long-term deals when you find a pitcher who is underrated, not overrated! You had and opportunity and blew it. And Tangotiger's: I don't have my Marcels ready yet, but I'm going to guess that Lohse is going to come out ok at something like a 4/30 deal.
  5. The whole bullpen has been horrible. This is a myth that needs to die. I hope he is back next year as well. I would prefer that he comes back as a middle reliever or setup man instead of our closer. I actually would like to see him back as the closer in 2009, largely because I agree with rluz: "The only reason Torres is the closer is because we have no one better. He's an OK reliever but I think everyone knows he's nothing special." Instead of having a manager take a better RP (should we add one) & arbitrarily stick him in the closer role, I'd prefer to see Torres retained as CP (he's a proven vet! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ) so a better RP can be used more as the 'fireman'.
  6. I just can't find a picture that better captures the moment, along with my emotions, than this one: http://graphics.jsonline.com/graphics/photographer/28/28755_large.jpg
  7. But don't forget all the time Yo missed prior to us getting CC. I think, on balance, that the net effect of not losing Yo would have been roughly equal to the net effect of adding Sabathia for ~ 1/2 the season.
  8. Welcome rudimen! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Rickie Weeks: I hate his defense. I hate the way he botched the DP against the Cubs. I hate the fact that he hasn't lived up to his potential. But I was so happy for him on Friday night. That HR was an important piece of Brewers history. We might be playing tonight in NYC if not for his homer. You've got exactly my sentiments mixed in there, bucks2281. I just felt a flood of joy for Rickie when he turned that pitch around... absolutely destroyed it. Now, if we can just see a few more of those patented laser-beam homers from Rickie heading forward. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif The platoon at 2nd base gave us excellent production in the second half: Durham = .369/.477 & Weeks = .378/.451. That went way under the radar Agreed. I'll continue to back Weeks, but I ahve to acknowledge that Ray Durham was far better for us than I had hoped he could be. Excellent complimentary pickup by Melvin.
  9. http://images.inmagine.com/img/brandxpictures/x271/bxp59081.jpg I haven't felt this happy about Wisconsin sports in more than a decade. Thank you, Brewers. Seeing that picture just sums up how I feel/felt, too, jordan. Excellent choice.
  10. Jack Zduriencik Doug Melvin CC Sabathia, who has reminded us both what a dominant pitcher looks like today, and also what one looked like 30 years ago J.J. Hardy, whose steady play all season long provided a textbook example of how to run the MLB season as a marathon & not a sprint. Prince Fielder, who produced like the beast he is over the final two weeks of the season -- .388/.455/.776/1.230, and didn't have too bad a September, either (.998 OPS) Rickie Weeks's pinch-hit, 3-R HR on September 26th v. Chicago in the bottom of the 7th inning Ryan Braun, with a walkoff grand slam & playoffs-sealing 2-R shot last night Sabathia deserves special mention because even though he was a CY Young winner, and I knew he was a stud, he outpitched my wildest fantasies. Amen, Crew07!
  11. I do feel bad for Ned, but I still support the decision, which I thought was overdue. I think splitter sums it up best for me. I feel bad for Yost in the sense that he was a big part of the ride for some time. However, I don't feel bad in that he sealed his own fate by not performing at a level consistent with retaining the job. The timing was, of course, bad... but I agree that it was a move that should have been made, just earlier.
  12. OK, so the Brewers will probably need to make an extension for Hart happen, put him in center, and move Gamel to the OF. I'd actually prefer Braun in CF at some point. We've got Cameron through 2009, most likely, and if he leaves/isn't re-signed, I'd like to see Braun take over as long as Ryan's reads off the bat have improved. I'm not sold on Hart away from a corner spot just yet. He's been fine in RF, though. If Braun can cover CF, that'd leave the Crew able to ease Gamel into the OF in left. Losing Brantley along with LaPorta sure stinks, but I'd say it's been worth it. Sabathia completely blew me out of the water with his past two starts. In no way did I expect him to pitch well his previous time out, let alone have a masterpiece left in him today. CC!
  13. I have to admit that I teared up after the Ryan Braun HR. I had to remind myself that the game wasn't over yet.
  14. Im not concerned about his power numbers because more power is the last thing we need. As power goes down, so follows OBP. I personally would want no part of Edmonds. His defense at this point is not good in CF... not even close to Cameron's, and they're relatively close offensively (I think Cam is slightly ahead of Edmonds due to the power question). Cameron would have a 30 HR season if he hadn't missed the first 25 games, and yes I know that was his own doing.
  15. I think I've mentioned this twice in the last 10 posts. Hey, who let chopped liver change his screen name to Patrick425? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I have to just echo the sentiments here... this is great news. For the (imo asinine), 'Where is Sheets when we need him?' line... well here he is, once again, for this franchise.
  16. Hmmmm. Is that possible? In glorious situations like this, I try not to get too hampered by 'facts' & 'logistics' http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  17. James Jerry Hardy, I want to have your babies. That dude has become my favorite Brewers player this season -- this only cements that further.
  18. I might be the charter member of the booing-is-okay club, with Gagne being a key cog, but there's no denying that all year long Gagne has been a pretty remarkable social citizen. Seems like every time I'd turn around on an FSN broadcast, I'd hear about him donating $40,000 here and $50,000 there. And now this. Not sure what to say, but this was a great gesture and story to hear about, even for someone like me that rejects feel-goodery as much as possible. Props to Gagne. Tonight's crowd was special and electric, and his generosity is to be thanked. Great post, valpo. They mentioned on the FSN-WI broadcast last night that the Brewers as a team this year have contributed just north of $500K to charity as a team, and that Gagne is responsible for appx. $200K of that.
  19. I still don't understand why people think Cameron is a lock. He's not worth $10 million at age 36 with declining skills and a strikeout rate that would make Jose Hernandez blush. Give it up already, JBriggs. If only Cameron were as bad as you repeat time & time again, you'd have an argument. I didn't read anything in the linked article that we haven't heard from agents in the past. As much as I'd like to believe that Sabathia will re-sign with the Brewers, I understand that the Crew cannot realistically compete with the funny money that CC's going to get.
  20. I think that's correct, bckid. At first I thought it was a fan rushing the field, but there certainly weren't any visible on the broadcast. The camera angle following Braun to the plate was from a low vantage point -- I think the camera was in his left hand. Nice hustle FSN camera dude!
  21. I agree, the Cubs will run their best out there all weekend. I was talking about the crowd that will be there. I'd be surprised if we see the Cubs' 'best' lineup in more than one of the three games.
  22. If the players cant bunt, the blame should lay solely on the coaching staff for not emphasizing it enough in batting practice. And for foolishly asking unprepared players to do so in the game. I think 75% is a fair expectation I haven't checked, but I'd be surprised if the Brewers have bunted at a 75% success rate. And in watching other teams around the league, I think setting the bar of 'acceptable' at 75% is setting yourself up for frustration.
