  1. trying to cover for two bad defensive players... ... while injured.
  2. Just as a heads-up, the Padres acquired Royals OF Justin Huber for a PTBNL. No big deal, except that I'm pretty sure Huber doesn't have any options remaining, and neither does another Pads OF candidate, Paul McAnulty. That means that if the Padres go with 12 pitchers, they won't have room on the 25-man for at least one player that has no options... and once Edmonds returns, there's another 25-man spot that needs to be open. I doubt Huber was brought in to precede releasing McAnulty, since Paul bats lefty & Huber is a righty. Just wondering, since if they don't keep Callix Crabbe on their 25-man roster, he has to be returned to Milwaukee, correct?
  3. I just noticed this... pretty sure ol' pinky-unitard is flashing the 'Live Long & Prosper' symbol. Wow.
  4. So you're referring to Parra? I don't see how Villy is the better choice to send to AAA.
  5. Was twobrewers's scenario the way the J.D. Closser situation played out last year? Iirc he cleared waivers too, and I know he was with the Giants' AAA club by mid-season.
  6. Apparently they'll let any damn punk asses live there now. A true west sider though, I don't think TLB crosses a bridge much. I... umm.... no comeback? http://sio.midco.net/sublime/home/pwned.jpg Damn you, EDR. I'll get you next time.
  7. I think Villy could improve marginally, but by & large what you see is what you're going to get. ERA & WHIP aren't very good stats to use since they're both influenced heavily by things out of a pitcher's control (besides, 1.24 is basically identical to 1.25). The incredibly low BAA for Carlos thus far is a pretty good indication of why people are being cautiously optimistic - a number like .230 is not an accurate talent indicator... instead something that is going to regress back towards the mean. I think both are quality options for the #3-5 spots of the rotation, and about on an equal ground in terms of talent, with Bush being better at limiting BBs, and CV better at not getting murdered while pitching from the stretch.
  8. When you limit your sample to Villy's 168 MLB IP, then you arrive at premature absolutes like "but when it comes to actually not letting runners across, [bush] has struggled in that area while CV has not." The reason people are tempering expectations on Villy is that he got fairly lucky in avoiding the damage from BBing guys as much as he did last year. If he'd had the weak bullpen support that Capuano got, many would be stating how overrated he is, and not ready for MLB.
  9. I'm talking about throwing up a red flag to Padmedalla. I don't care how in love with someone you are, I imagine one would think twice about marrying somebody who wantonly slaughtered a bunch of children. Ahh, gotcha. Btw, mega-bonus points for "Padmedalla" http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif That's right there with "Menchkins"
  10. Rickie Weeks played most of the last two seasons hurt, apparently, but gets a free pass from everyone on this board. Well, that's what tends to happen when you're still productive when hurt. And it's not correct at all to say "everyone" - there have been & remain many Weeks doubters/critics/skeptics.
  11. He was a turd. Like a messy, 'too much beer & booze last night' turd.
  12. I'd be shocked if Vargas doesn't land in the NL Central. Random, unsubstantiated comment of the week.
  13. Teagarden This guy looks to be the type of prospect you'd target as a main piece in return for a player like, say, Sheets. I have a real hard time thinking we could net Taylor for another prospect or a decent major-leaguer. Seriously - BB rates like his don't come around very often for a C, let alone the fact that he can rake, too.
  14. Ok, who is getting the better end of it. Traditional 5x5 league. That trade doesn't looks that great for you, but targeting Ramirez is smart since he can provide some pop along with SB. I wouldn't want to give up a slugger like Prince & a SP like Beckett, but you do have to give to get. One note on Lee - his latest injury was a wrist injury, and it's going to be over a year in terms of recovery time for him heading into 2008... sound familiar? I'm expecting Lee to regain a bit of power for 2008, unfortunately. i'm not up to speed with the injury status of Beckett, that would be my key factor in deciding which trio i'd like best. Beckett is currently on the 15-day DL for his back. Given that he pitched a ton of innings in 2007, I'd bet on him missing time this year before I'd wager on a full season. SP as a group tend to have something like a 1/3 chance to miss major or semi-major time as it is. From CBS's player page: "The Red Sox put Josh Beckett (back) on the 15-day DL. The move will be retroactive to March 19, meaning the earliest Beckett could pitch is April 4 against the Blue Jays. Beckett continues to progress in his rehab and the Red Sox are hopeful he will be activated off the DL for the Toronto series or to start the homestand in Fenway in the following set."
  15. he makes no bones about killing them all, including the children. You'd think that would throw up some huge red flags, but no. How did it not raise red flags? -- "They're animals - and I slaughtered them like animals!" That's one of my favorite scenes in the trilogy, personally. The way Williams crafts & builds the music there is brilliant.
  16. I do not think anyone, especially Melvin, could have projected Estrada being a huge turd in the locker room, on the base paths, and behind the plate. Don't forget "in the on-deck circle," and "on the chartered flights." http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  17. You can choose from Prince, Braun, Corey, Rickie, JJ, Billy, Cameron, Gross, and you take... a pitcher?
  18. With Bush, it's all about keeping guys off the bases (sounds like a 'no duh', but it's especially crucial for Dave). He doesn't do well from the stretch, so fortunately one of his strengths is not walking guys. I think that of all our SP, Bush will benefit the most from the improved IF defense.
  19. Either way, we are a better team now than if we had kept Davis, Eveland and Krynzel. So it still worked out. How can you claim this? Melvin got worked in that trade, sadly. Right now I'd much rather have DD's innings & Eveland at AAA than the mess that came after this trade. If Estrada hadn't turned out to be such a freakin' bum, I'd even be happy with the trade.
  20. Ned is very sound at many of the 'behind the scenes' aspects of being a MLB manager.
  21. Agreed, Logan. Though, the more time I have to think about it, the more I'm confident that Narveson/Jackson/DiFelice will be able to be - at worst - nearly as useful as Vargas.
  22. You're right on the Cubs - 'status quo' is pretty much what they have from last year. Ummmm whats there to re-visit? Kendall, Gagne, Cameron, Riske? There's so much more to it. The bullpen is much better on the whole, Kendall's OBP upgrade over Estrada makes his lack of power completely excusable (well, almost http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ), and the Cameron domino-effect is huge in terms of D, let alone the fact that Mike himself will post a line around .265/.350/.450 this year.
  23. Likely true - does that have any bearing on Vargas aside from being one spot he may not have a chance to get?
  24. 2nd would probably be the likliest outcome, but I'll let some numbers people tackle that one. Should we finish higher than the Reds? Yes, but I would not be surprised if the Reds pass us by this year. Its just unfortunate that a lot of Brewer fans are looking through rose colored glasses and solely banking on all of our young players to step it up to the next level. What next level? You want Prince hitting 70 HR? YoGa having a BB/K ratio of 1/10? The Reds are not a more talented team than the Brewers, and even adding Bruce won't change that. They're a team to take very seriously, and to keep an eye on contending in the next 2-3 years, but for 2008 it'd take a bunch of serious injuries for the Reds to surpass the Crew imo.
  25. Teams want and need starting pitching depth, sure, but not at that price TLB. I'm not sure what leg you really have to stand on in your argument. My argument is that it wasn't the $3 mil., like you seem to be saying - instead, the lack of minor-league options. That'd make any amount of salary the Brewers were or weren't willing to eat irrelevant. I'm fairly certain Vargas will be starting for an MLB team this season. Give it up guys jez. 126 replies on Vargas being released. Try this: don't read the thread.
