  1. BJB, re-visit the offseason's transactions. We were there in 2002. They'll lose 110 with Roberts and 112 without him. While I agree with this, they still need to draw as many fans as possible. Also, what you're advocating here is accepting a crappy offer for a top-tier player (for his position), when you're all but guaranteed to get two or three better offers by the trading deadline this year. I wouldn't want to take a bunch of crappy players for a good one, that's just bad management imo. Roberts has real value and you must insist on getting real value in return. Now if the Cubs would've included Pie in the deal, I think Roberts'd be a North-sider by now.
  2. With all due respect, what are you talking about? How do you know that teams wanted to have Vargas at AAA? That's been discussed in this thread. And quite frankly, if they did, why would they even want to acquire him? Because teams always want & need more SP depth. You really can never have enough. Can't we finally end the debate and just say that teams weren't interested in Claudio Vargas at that price...I mean it's pretty damn obvious. I wouldn't, because it's not all that accurate.
  3. Just let him make his starts and give all the innings talk a rest. You're right. That's worked out so well for Prior, Wood, etc. What were we thinking?
  4. I'm stunned by the fact that there was (or apparently was) no trade market for Vargas. No one wants this guy, so the Brewers just have to release him? Other teams wanted to do what the Brewers wanted with Vargas - have him spend a portion of the year at AAA. Since he has no options left, there weren't any takers. It's possible they view Narveson as a low-cost equivalent (or at least near-equivalent) to Vargas. Yes, and as others mentioned, ZachJack is there too.
  5. What's that you say? He'd be worth $3 million for someone that needs a starter? Apparently not. The rub of it was that teams weren't interested since he doesn't have options left. He's easily worth $3 mil. as a SP.
  6. Jacque Jones (while he dodged trade rumors and taunts by Cubs fans both years he was here) was as big a detriment in our outfield as Braun was at 3rd base for you. I mean this in the nicest way, but that's not even close to being true. the guys that they replaced are why we are better. Fukudome isn't that much of an upgrade over the Cubs' 2007 RF production, and Soto had a fluky good year. Adjust his BABIP to a normal level, and he isn't even called up in 2007.
  7. Oh yeah, I'd have to imagine that serving as a lightning rod has got to be the #1 worst part of being a MLB manager. Not fun.
  8. It's a great place to live, as long as you can handle rainy, gray 'winters.' If you like the appeal of a snowy winter, it's probably not for you, and to be honest the dreariness can get to be a drag. You just kinda get used to it. But it's been 50 degrees or so for roughly a month running now, and obviously we saw zero snow accumulate this winter. It's gorgeous outside right now, too. Oh - and one last thing... For 2008, Portland was #5 on Forbes's Cleanest Cities list. and #1 an Yahoo's Greenest Cities list. And the public transportation is incredible (which Yahoo addresses).
  9. I probably could've stunted at least one of the three's growth. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Sorry, I wasn't trying to debate your point, just some free association.
  10. decisions LIKE batting the catcher 9th come from a collective goup decision making process. But most people here like that idea, and recognize that Ned isn't the only brain at work.
  11. Check around the league and see how many teams are paying $3 million for their 7th best starter. Well that's kind of irrelevant since he's better than many #5s out there. In today's marketplace, $3 mil for a MLB SP is a good deal. Though I agree for the Brewers, not spending this money may be a wise move. The bigger joke of a contract, though, is Mota's.
  12. Baseball-reference.com: McClung Career Splits Scroll down to "Pitching Role" EDIT: Seth as SP - 195 1/3 IP, 4.9 BB/9, 6 K/9, 1.57 HR/9, 6.17 ERA (37 starts)
  13. Yet another shining example of the national print media's coverage of baseball becoming obsolete. "changes that won't be enough to offset the more dramatic moves of the Cubs and the Reds." Well, we know for certain that this article is drivel with no research behind it. We can move on.
  14. We're actually paying Mota more than we would have paid Claudio iirc. So maybe that's part of the reasoning too... I still think there's something else we don't know about this yet.
  15. What are you talking about?! He puts the ball in play! He's not a power hitter, therefore he MUST be a contact hitter!
  16. See #83, which I presume was posted as you were typing, MJL. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  17. Give me a break guys http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif Check around the league to see how much some teams pay for #4 / #5 starters. $3-ish mil. was a good deal.
  18. Wow. I'm surprised. "Here in spring training there are three pitchers who earned the right to pitch in our starting rotation who weren't in our rotation last year. Those are Manny Parra, Carlos Villanueva and Yovani Gallardo." "I called a number of ball clubs over the past 7-10 days, and I had trouble garnering any interest ... the past two days he was on waivers, anyone could have claimed him for $20,000." -DM Geez. Isn't the depth alone worth $3-4 mil.? I'm surprised the Melvin feels comfortable with the mix of Sheets/YoGa/Soup/Bush/Parra/Villy for the MLB starting 5. Is there something in the works right now? It's possible that Vargas refused to go to the bullpen. Good point.
  19. For I-III, I rank them III - II - I. I honestly don't know why people are so down on II. It's not a great movie, but I like it a lot more than Ep. I on the whole. Darth Maul alone gives Ep. I a huge boost, but it's nearly all cancelled out by Meesa Jar Jar Binks. I like that Ep. II is darker, and imo it sets the stage quite well for III.
  20. Diener, McNeal & Wade come instantly to mind in terms of players that improved under Crean.
  21. drag bunting has given me fits as to where last year I could drag bunt for base hits all I wanted with guys like Corey Hart and Craig Counsell. Now when I try to drag bunt the guy doesn't even take the bat off of his shoulder. Hmm. I wonder if it's based more on split-second timing now than it was in the past. I know I just quickly pressed the "O" button just about as the pitch was on me, and it was a beauty - if Ramirez hadn't been playing in, no way TGJ wasn't easily safe. EDIT: I have never been able to drag-bunt well on The Show ('06 or '07) before, for whatever that's worth.
  22. No kidding - good ol' Charter, bringing you all the newest services 5 years after every other cable/satellite provider. To those in Madison/Charter territory, get away from Charter as soon as possible. I have Comcast now (different market) and it's just night & day - and Comcast isn't exactly revered by customers, either. Go with DISH or DirecTV. Charter is a joke.
  23. I just don't know. Put yourself in the Orioles' shoes - would you want to deal a fan favorite and established star for a bunch of 'maybe' prospects? Trading one top player for a bunch of potential filler is a bad strategy imo. The O's could certainly just hang onto Roberts and get a much better offer once the season gets going.
  24. For instance Cordero had 66 appearences compared to 77 for Turnbow last year. That's pretty typical. But the point is pitching consecutive days, and both of those roles lock guys into situational appearances that can disregard strain on the arm. On the other hand Zambrano is capable of a better year than he had in 07. That's true, but the evidence is starting to become pretty clear that Z's regressing, as opposed to having one off year. His peripherals have been sliding for a couple/few years now, so it's more likely he repeats 2007 or is even worse.
