  1. Then why bother drafting him? I know the 16th round isn't exactly the 1st, but that's just throwing a draft pick away. I guess I think I know what your feelings will be to the following, but why not take a project-type HS arm at that point? Just really frustratingly inefficient.
  2. This is one I was surprised to see. Just 22, & was only in the system for a year+ ... ? Why make this cut at this time? Couldn't agree more. Giacalone and McMahan defy logic (other than their relatively low draft status) for an organization short on bats. You'd think the organization could have found them room someplace. My thoughts exactly. I wonder if there were some 'behind the scenes' factors.
  3. More David Denson buzz! Imo all it's going to take is one big season for him to jump onto our top 10 or top 5 lists. That power/eye combo is just tasty. And the first half of that updated top-20 from MLB.com actually looks pretty accurate.
  4. What an amazing first day of the tourney! 4 OT games, for the first time that's happened on one day of the dance! I definitely stayed up too late watching last night, but I couldn't switch it off. The Texas winner was incredible!

  6. I posted this earlier in this thread... and I get the concerns about him not being super efficient, but Gallardo pitched at least 6 innings in 22 of his 31 starts last season. I also think Peralta will be pitching significantly deeper into games this season; I'm counting on his ability to get groundballs contributing to that in a big way. I think our staff has the ability to be the surprise of the NL this season, but how likely that is to happen is obviously up for debate.
  7. Overbay has 25-30 HR potential? When? In 2006 when he hit 22 for a career high? I hope Braun isn't hinting around that he hipped Lyle to his Juice dealer! So much for me being excited about Braun's glowing comments on Haniger.
  8. This bugs me a lot. I hate how involved Mark A. is with the team. I don't see that changing either. On the other hand, Melvin didn't even inquire about Garza or was this a case where he didn't really think we needed starting pitching? Based on Mark A's quote of Melvin, I think it's a case of Melvin assuming Garza was well out of the Brewers price range, not that the team didn't need starting pitching. Whether Melvin's assumption was based on previous contact with Garza's representatives or simply a gut feeling is another story. This whole situation is really troubling to me, if our assumptions are correct. How can a GM make the call that a player is too expensive without bothering to consult with the pocketbook-holder?
  9. They defend dribble penetration poorly enough as a unit that I'm not sold this is the case for this season's team. I think 3-point shooting is what carries this team. KenPom has them as 59th in the country for D & 5th for O; those rankings pass the eye test for me. The other still-glaring defensive weakness is lack of bigs. Those two factors combined is why I think MSU had their way with UW -- they have strong penetrating guards & one of the best (& most athletic) big men in the country. I took that as him saying UW's defense is better than Oregon's so it will carry them. Oregon's kenpom rankings are 90 for d and 12 for offense. If you look ahead to potentially playing Creighton they are 126 for d and 1 for o. There are two teams similar to UW with very good to great offenses but even worse defenses. Whoops, if this is the correct interpretation then my apologies to fondy

  11. The Badgers looked good enough to beat anyone tonight. They're deep enough that they could make a really deep run in the tourney.
  12. I went to grade school with Vuke's son. The one memory of Vuke that I have as a kid is that he was a chaperone on one particular class trip to the Milwaukee Public Museum -- he was wearing gator-skin boots, and young-me asked him about said boots. I asked him if he was wearing snakeskin boots... because, you know, I was cool & knew that that was a thing. But he told me that, no, he was wearing gator boots. At the time, I felt bummed because the boots weren't made of that cool thing that I'd heard about before. In hindsight, I learned about a professional athlete's gayt-uh boots in the least flamboyant manner possible... he just wasn't bragging at all. And that memory is awesome.
  13. I think I'd rather keep him in the bigs & worry about anything else later. His arm belongs at the big-league level.
  14. While I agree that this kind of perspective is important to consider, Peralta's 'eye test' for the second half was really strong. It didn't look accidental that he was having success, and I don't expect him to do anything but build upon that.
  15. I was thinking it might've been his agent advising him to take it down.
  16. Really?? Peralta has the best stuff on the entire staff in my opinion and is poised for a breakout season. From June 1st on, he posted a 3.48 ERA over 21 starts, including 2 complete games. How is that not worthy of a rotation spot? This is exactly how I feel about Wily. I think we're going to see big things from him this season.
  17. The Brewers actually have some really nice organizational pitching depth for the first time in what feels like forever. Even though we lack that clear-cut #1 type, I feel pretty comfortable heading into 2014 with this talent pool at or a phone call away from MLB: Gallardo Lohse Peralta Garza Estrada Thornburg Nelson Smith Burgos Wang Hellweg Pena Henderson K-Rod Fiers Figaro Gorzelanny Kintzler Wooten Sure, not every guy there is a stud or projects to be an All-Star, but that's a really nice list.
  18. Or he turns in at least 6 innings, as he did in 22 of his 31 starts last season. Obviously in his first start he might not be completely stretched out, so him not going 6 wouldn't surprise me. But the misinformation train on Gallardo never turning in 6+ IP performances has gone a little off the rails on the BF forums lately.
  19. Looks like Johel got a slap on the wrist -- hopefully the left one -- for sharing that. The link is now dead.
  20. With the caveat that I realize you can't talk about everything related to this... TELL US EVERYTHING ABOUT THESE CONVERSATIONS!
  21. Olmsted just seems like the kind of arm that the Cards would pick up & get 2-3 really good seasons from.
  22. And they've shown they can't defend that all season. I feel like they'll either go on a great run really deep into the tourney, or get bounced by like a Coastal Carolina in the first or second round.
  23. Not a big fan of the guy, but Sawx ownah John Henry had a wicked burn on this one:
