  1. Plus, if I'm Santana & all the noted teams are actually interested, there are at least three teams of those six that look like more legit postseason contenders than the Brewers.
  2. I thought the same thing at first when I saw that deal was done, but McGuinness had been DFA'd to make room for Shin-Soo Choo. McGuinness doesn't have anywhere near the MiLB track record that Davis does, so I'm not sure he's anything more than a guy the Bucs were able to get very cheaply. Based on his stats, he looks more like an organizational soldier than a viable MLB 1B option (even if it'd only be as a platoon guy) -- he only mustered a .713 OPS v. right-handed pitching in the PCL last season.
  3. Are the Rangers forfeiting their 1st rounder with this signing?
  4. I just like how quiet Morris's swing is when he's comfortable at the plate. Francisco really seems to have to put a lot more effort into his swing to generate power than Morris does (just imo from admittedly a small sample of watching Morris on MiLB.tv).
  5. That's a really good idea, Doc. As it is, this is more like a Wall of Participation http://i.imgur.com/b7w4Qlo.jpg
  6. I think Morris will wind up being a better option for the RH side of a 1B platoon, both this coming season & going forward, than Francisco. I actually think the Brewers could get a good amount of bang for their buck with a Morris/Halton platoon, which would be a lot more wise than overpaying for some Grizzled Veteran™ with a Proven Track Record™ to turn in a sub-.800 OPS. Plus, having Morris as a power LH bat off the bench on days he wouldn't be starting would be nice.
  7. 28 plate appearances. Let me repeat. 28. One fewer hit would be a .260-ish AVG & a sub-.300 OBP. This is the definition of a sample so small that it is useless. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=gennesc01&year=2013&t=b
  8. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/12/diamondbacks-to-sign-eric-chavez.html Chavez to sign with ARZ, so locking this one up.
  9. Yup...I have no doubt. This offseason has been pretty frustrating so far. Yea it sure has... I honestly don't think Doug will do anything about 1B. God I hope I'm wrong! Part of me wonders if, with Thornburg's name floated as having been discussed, Melvin will pass on a higher risk/reward type move like Ike Davis & decide to just go big & trade for a good bat at 1B. Knowing Melvin, the crap-saster that was 2013 Brewers firstbasemen had to eat away at his soul. I wonder if Warning Track Power has sniffed out what's really going on (post #232).
  10. Good point here. Definitely a tier or more lower in quality going both ways, but a useful comp.
  11. I definitely consider Payne & McGary pretty darn good. I agree that the B1G should be an interesting horse-race this season. Go Bucky!
  12. There are a lot of things I think Gindl is capable of doing at the big-league level. Playing 1B at 5'9" isn't one of them. I wouldn't say it's optimal, but he couldn't possibly be worse than Prince Fielder out there. And people are legitimately suggesting 5'10" Rickie Weeks there as well. What's Travis Ishikawa up to these days? The first thought I had when I saw these suggestions was 'no way', for the exact same reason. Neither guy fits there, but the sorry state of the Brewers organization at 1B is what has led us here.
  13. Any guesses from people on who could get taken? Taylor Green stands out on that list for me.

  15. Another factor to consider is that a move to Miami would be 'going home' for Rickie. I could see this happening, although I have to admit I'm surprised the Marlins have any interest.

  17. Which really isn't all that terrible either. Not good but not fall off the table pathetic, especially when you view it against the other options that the Brewers were/are considering that are also LH. For comparison, Yuni B's career OPS is .673. I realize Loney's v.LH line is ok in comparison to the others you listed, but I don't think the list should be limited so arbitrarily.
  18. To your point on his offense possibly increasing with a more hitter-friendly home park, his career road slash line is .302/.354/.465/.819. Not too shabby when you add in his good defense, actually. The one downside would be that he hasn't been able to hit LHP (career .256/.308/.361/.669 line).
  19. Do we know they have no interest? Or could it be that they might look into him as a 1B option now that Corey's moved on?
  20. Link? The only thing I read was Haudricourt citing a "source" that said $8 million max with incentives, not $8 million base. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/235440371.html On this tweet link, there's this response tweet from Jim Breen: Melvin just said Mariners beat Brewers in both base salary and incentives.
