  1. Can you share your reasoning behind this sentiment?
  2. I don't disagree that last season was probably a down-year that he will rebound from, but if he was a free agent coming off an .819 OPS season (and remember, he is a 1B/DH with poor defense...) would you give him a $100M+ contract?? I think what's misleading about your comparison is that he wasn't that elite in 2012 either. I don't think he's been the type of player worth that kind of mega-deal since 2009. And given his age it's doubtful he's on the upward trajectory of his career. For what it's worth his BABIP last season was above his career average, so he wasn't just getting unlucky in that way. The bigger problem is that his BB% has been dropping every year for the last four years. I wouldn't have given the .900 OPS Prince Fielder the contract he got from the Tigers, given his age & body type.
  3. The reasoning would be because of Davis's .797 OPS for 2010-2012 playing in an extreme pitchers' park. Contrasted with Francisco's 2013 OPS, which was right in line with the rest of his career. Not saying I believe or don't believe that Davis will bounce back from '13, but that's the reasoning.
  4. I posted this during the postseason -- Keep in mind that the difference in [Fielder's] counting stats between 2012 & 2013 is just 5 HRs, 8 H, & 10 BB (& 22 PA). Honestly, you have to factor in going from 17 HBP to 9 this season as well. Over his last 40 games this regular season, he OPS'd .957 & only went hitless 8 times. In short, I think it's a little early to declare that [his power is leaving him]. A drop in HRs should have been expected, moving from Miller Park to Comerica, and I think this is most likely simply a case of a not-as-good season combined with bad luck. Fielder looks like (in terms of 'the eye test') he's in as good of shape as he ever was with the Brewers, so it's pretty hard for me to think he's all of a sudden physically declining at 29. He probably won't age well, but I think this is more an aberration than beginning of a trend. I don't disagree that Fielder's contract was a huge overpay (most FA contracts are), but I also think it's easy to look at an .819 OPS & a bad postseason & come to (imo) a premature conclusion that Fielder's already on the decline.
  5. Detroit has been very open to wanting to trade Porcello. Dealing Porcello would allow them to extend Scherzer and move Austin Jackson down in the order while not taking on another large contract. Even so, I'd be pleasantly surprised if they couldn't do better than Aoki, given Porcello's age.
  6. What a fun trade. I think Prince+The Ballpark in Arlington is going to be scary.
  7. Since the DET-TEX deal is done, locking up this thread. It's my first thread lock!
  8. This is pure speculation from this blogger, & based on absolutely nothing. "Buzz from Milwaukee suggests..." is about the most vague 'claim' one can make.
  9. Sooo... Frank Kaminsky.
  10. Josh Johnson off the market
  11. 1) That's a pretty major "just" 2) I'm hopeful that someone (maybe Taylor Green? The ghost of Corey Koskie?) -- preferably a LH bat -- can be brought in to spell Ramirez somewhat frequently in 2014. He's just too valuable a bat to let get worn down by playing everyday.
  12. Don't get me wrong -- I definitely am not undervaluing his talent. There's no denying his ability & production. I just think the Giants are spending/gambling quite a bit on him bucking the regular 'durability rate' (if you will) of a guy closing in on age 40.
  13. On the Baseball America podcast (JJ Cooper and John Manuel) from the end of October (15-minute mark), they labeled Johnny Davis an 80 runner. They had reports that Davis runs a 6-flat 60, and he is in the 10.4/10.5 range in the 100-meters. They also said it is the fastest 60 time they have ever been given for a prospect. His Junior College coach put a "Billy Hamilton's speed with Ricky Henderson's body" comp on him. He is 23 years old already, but if he can continue to get on base near the .350 clip he did in his first 100 professional at bats, he could be an interesting player to follow over the next couple of seasons. Great catch -- thanks for sharing
  14. Why do I get the feeling that, regardless, he's the type of guy who'll go bare-arms during the cold weather games
  15. The money in baseball is just staggering. Guaranteeing $23M to a guy for his age 38 & 39 seasons is almost as cuckoo to me as the fact that San Fran can afford to take the hit to their wallet if Hudson winds up throwing like a total of 94 IP for them.
  16. UW looked quite good, albeit with the given that they're very thin on post depth. Hayes was a relief to watch, because even though he's not all that tall or big, his assertiveness in the post is going to be very needed this season. He played well against bigger UF players. I still firmly believe that Dekker will wind up being the best player so far under Bo. He's just tremendous in so many ways on offense, & you have to assume his D is going to take a big step forward in his second year under Bo & in the B1G. Jackson looks like he's going to be extremely valuable as a bigger & stronger PG. He *should* be a matchup nightmare at PG for most of our opponents. And I think the duo of Jackson & Dekker alone is going to win them a bunch of games this season. Having happy thoughts about this year's squad... only nagging issue is lack of post depth. Overall, they not only have a good mix of talent, but they have good cohesion very early in the campaign too.
  17. Terms on this contact (edited into thread title) reported by MLB's Twitter account at roughly 3:15p CT today: EDIT: Link EDIT 2: That deal is just... insane imo. Guess it kinda sheds light on the kind of trade value a guy like Gómez might have.
  18. The Brewers organization just painfully reminds me of a mantra Billy Beane cites: - "I always felt like in our market you either have a playoff team or you’re building one. That in-between stage is sort of a no-man’s land in our market place." - "The key," Beane says, "is identifying the moment" -- the time when continued success with incremental change has become impossible, when you have to cast off existing talent and start fresh. "The worst is when you try to do it halfway: when you think you can compete and you also think you're trying to rebuild. Then you're stuck in no-man's-land. You either do it or you don't."
  19. You're not simply analyzing the prospective deal if that's how you're framing the question. You're tying in objectively unrelated issues -- not to say that I don't understand why you or other folks might approach looking at this not completely in a vaccuum. But imo you can't say a deal does or doesn't make the club better if you use elements that aren't part of the deal to evaluate the deal. It would be similar to saying that you wouldn't want to trade four quarters to receive five quarters because you also need more dimes & nickels. The reason I would pull the trigger on this deal is that (as stated) I feel SP > Position Player. The rest of the roster construction has nothing to do with what I believe is objective analysis of a potential deal like this.
  20. I strongly disagree that Segura is even an average SS, defensively. I love statistical analysis as much as (nearly) anyone, but Segura passes the eye test waaay too well on defense for me to be swayed. He may not stick at SS as he hits his late 20s & early 30s, but he's going to be good there for at least 4 or 5 more seasons.
  21. Isn't it more likely that at age 23 (he just turned 3+ weeks ago) he adds 1-3 MPH for the next few years? Exactly. The "inevitable" physical decline will of course be 8-12 seasons from now, at which point he likely wouldn't even be Brewers property anymore. Well, if it's for an elite talent, similarly-aged/similarly salary-controlled, at SP... then yes. But that's just because I think of SP as more valuable than SS. I realize it's not this simple, but what I'm getting at is, 'We finally found $40 & now people want to trade it for $60?' -- well, yeah.
  22. I'd say yes & hang up before the Cards could change their minds. I love Segura, but I honestly think he's going to wind up closer to an Erick Aybar/Elvis Andrus type hitter than the .800+ OPS hitter he teased being in the first few months of 2013.
  23. Apparently Ryan Dempster threw batting practice until roughly 3am to anyone who stuck around the stadium. That's pretty cool.
  24. I'd forgotten (until looking around on Baseball-Reference this morning) that the Cards were the team the Red Sox beat in 2004 as well.
  25. Let's keep this thread from devolving into another re-hashing of organization-building philosophies... if anyone feels compelled to continue that discussion, I'm sure there are several threads that can be bumped to do so
