The story includes a highlight video of Peralta's shutout against Cincy. D-backs, Brewers entering break at opposite ends Arizona aims for season sweep in final meeting with Milwaukee By Chad Thornburg / MLB.com | 7/14/2013 2:47 AM ET No matter what happens Sunday against the Brewers, the D-backs will enter the All-Star break atop the National League West. "Nobody really picked us and the fact that we're in first place with all the obstacles we've overcome, it's exciting," said third baseman Eric Chavez. "I think we've somewhat overachieved. We've done better than maybe people expected." The D-backs are sitting six games above .500 entering Sunday, despite an MLB-leading 19 blown saves this season. "Hopefully it's something that won't come back to bite us," Chavez said. "Those games are tough. If you go into the last week of the season and you're only up one or two games, it wouldn't be much of a race if we had won those." Arizona will send Ian Kennedy to the mound Sunday, and the D-backs' Opening Day starter will be looking to put his first-half struggles behind him. Kennedy stumbled in his last start, picking up his fifth loss as he gave up five earned runs on nine hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings. The Brewers will counter with right-hander Wily Peralta, who is coming off a three-hit shutout of the Reds on Tuesday with his mother observing from the stands for the first time in his professional career. The 2-0 victory was also Peralta's first complete game. "I've been thinking about it all my career, like, 'When am I going to throw a complete game?'" Peralta said after the start. "The shutout was a blessing for me." In contrast to the D-backs' first-place status, the Brewers will enter the break in the cellar of the NL Central as one of only five Major League teams yet to reach the 40-win mark. D-backs: Parra's status unknown for Sunday Outfielder Gerardo Parra sat out a for second consecutive day and the fourth time this month on Saturday night. Parra had two days off earlier this month after crashing into the outfield wall while trying to make a running catch against the Mets on July 1. Parra is batting just .154 this month after hitting .305 in April and .311 in May. "It'll be good for him, because of the way he plays," manager Kirk Gibson said of the time off. "The one against the Mets, it's like he got in a car accident. He sacrificed himself. He's just beat up so I made that decision. If you look at the numbers, you might figure it out." Brewers: Segura still going strong All-Star shortstop Jean Segura played in his 91st game Saturday, having missed just two the entire season. Segura had played only 45 big league games prior to 2013, but the 23-year-old said he isn't feeling fatigued. Segura's last day off was July 2, and he won't get much time off this week, as he will travel to New York for Tuesday's All-Star Game. "I won't be able to take much of a break, but it's a fun game and it's going to be a good experience," Segura said. Worth noting • The D-backs enter Sunday's series finale with a chance for a sweep of the season series in their final meeting with the Brewers this year. • Brewers starter Marco Estrada (on the disabled list since June 5 with hamstring and back issues) was scheduled to throw a bullpen session off flat ground Saturday, but it was pushed to Sunday.

  4. Sounds Stung By Ninth-Inning Rally In 5-4 Loss Memphis Plates Three With Two Outs In Final Frame To Rally For Victory Nashville Sounds http://i.imgur.com/YJDkhGt.jpg Robinzon Diaz, archive photo (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds) NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to stun the Nashville Sounds, 5-4, in front of 9,201 fans on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium. Nashville led 4-2 in the ninth and Kyle Heckathorn retired the first two batters of the frame before four consecutive Redbirds reached base against him, capped by Chris Swauger's bases-loaded, go-ahead three-run double. Heckathorn (6-3) suffered the loss while failing to convert his first save opportunity of the season. Stephen Parker led off the bottom of the ninth with a single for Nashville, but Fernando Salas retired the next three batters in order to close out the contest and notch his fourth save of the year. The defeat was the Sounds' league-leading 19th one-run defeat of the year and the club's first loss when leading after eight innings (30-1). Memphis had been 0-38 when trailing after eight frames prior to the come-from-behind win. The Sounds (33-64) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Kentrail Davis drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on a two-out Hunter Morris single to left. Memphis leveled the contest in the second when pitcher Boone Whiting helped his own cause with a two-out RBI single to left off Johnnie Lowe. Redbirds shortstop Greg Garcia gave the visitors a 2-1 lead in the top of the third when he belted his first career Triple-A homer, a leadoff solo shot to right off Lowe. Lowe turned in a solid spot start while filling in for Futures Game-bound Jimmy Nelson, working his second quality start of the year for the Sounds. The right-hander allowed two runs on 10 hits over six frames and took a no-decision. Nashville tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Blake Davis scored on Scooter Gennett's bases-loaded Baltimore chop single to the left side of the infield with two outs against Marc Rzepczynski. The Sounds pulled back in front in the seventh when they plated a pair of runs against Rzepczynski. Robinzon Diaz (3-for-4) led off with a single through the left side and scored the go-ahead run on Cole Garner's one-out triple to the wall in right-center. Blake Davis followed with a sacrifice fly that extended the Nashville lead to 4-2. Memphis attempted to rally in the eighth against Jesus Sanchez, loading the bases with one out on a pair of singles sandwiched around a hit batter. However, the Sounds right-hander recovered to strike out pinch-hitter Chad Huffmann and retired Ryan Jackson on a inning-ending groundout. The cross-state rivals wrap up the four-game set as well as the Tennessee Lottery I-40 Cup season series with a 6:35 p.m. finale on Sunday evening. Left-hander Chris Narveson (2-5, 6.70) will man the bump for the Sounds to face Memphis right-hander Scott McGregor (3-5, 5.70). Nashville Box Nashville PbP Nashville Gameday
  5. Unfortunately, another late-inning gut punch from the Redbirds delivered to the Sounds
  6. I might not be around to update lineups later, so any other mod feel free to step in & do so.
  7. But that's just it. If he's only set to make 2.95mil next season and can give Milw, spot starts like he did today and has in every one of them. Don't you prefer to have that next season as insurance with the likes of Peralta,Thornburg/Hellweg,Jungmann, and at some point Nelson on the mound? Nope. I don't want to keep clinging to players past 30 with only one season of team control remaining. As I said, I think Gorzelanny could bring back a solid prospect. The 2014 Brewers aren't a #4 SP away from contending. There's no point in not capitalizing on the value Gorzelanny has right now -- during the season & when he's on top of his game. Contending clubs overpay for pitching during the season every year. What are the Brewers going to do, keep him so they win 80 games next year instead of 76? They wouldn't get much for him at the '14 deadline, since he'd be a 2+ month rental at that point. If you want the non-proactive cycle to continue in Milwaukee, then yeah, sure -- hang on to Gorzelanny. However, iirc you have been bagging on Melvin for not being proactive. This would be a proactive move... and has the potential to turn a smart, small investment of money into an impact player down the road.
  8. This game preview story can be accessed via the "MLB Gameday" link in the OP -- scroll to the bottom of the Gameday page to find the link to the preview. The story includes a highlight video of Lohse's 8 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 7 K performance at Washington. Lohse looks to play stopper for Crew vs. D-backs Arizona undefeated in five matchups with Milwaukee this year By Jeremy Warnemuende / MLB.com | 7/13/2013 2:13 AM ET When the Brewers and D-backs square off on Saturday for the sixth time in 2013, Milwaukee will be seeking its first win in the season series. Arizona has won the first five meetings by a combined 13 runs, giving the team its first five-game winning streak over the Brewers since 1998-99. Kyle Lohse, who will take the mound for Milwaukee on Saturday night, pitched well enough for a win against the D-backs in his Brewers debut on April 5. In six innings, Lohse allowed just one run on five hits, striking out five and walking none. However, he received little help from his teammates in the Brewers' 3-1 loss. It's been and up-and-down season for Lohse since that first game, but the 34-year-old right-hander has been solid of late. After taking the loss in four of five starts in May, Lohse has either won or left without a decision in each of his past eight outings. He recorded his fifth win of the season on Monday against the Reds, when he allowed three runs and scattered nine hits across 6 2/3 innings but did not record a strikeout. Lohse's strategy is pitching to contact, and he doesn't always expect to fan many batters. "Yeah, but not zero," Lohse said after his last start. "They were really swinging early in the count and I'm not going to be that guy to get them to swing at balls way out of the zone. ... I'm just up there trying to pound the zone and they took advantage a couple of times, but more times than not I was able to get a weak fly ball or a ground ball." Much like Lohse, the D-backs' Randall Delgado, who will make his sixth start of the season on Saturday, limited the damage on the scoreboard while giving up a slew of hits his last time out. Delgado went six innings on Monday against the Dodgers, surrendering three runs on 11 hits. Called up from Triple-A Reno on June 18 to join the rotation, Delgado enters Saturday with a 1-3 record and a 3.48 ERA as a starter this season. After allowing two runs in seven innings in his first start of the year, Delgado laid out his basic plan as a pitcher, which has been relatively successful even if his record isn't an indication. "I just try to do my job every time they tell me," Delgado said. "I tried to keep it down in the zone and I think it worked, so I'll just try to keep it like that." Brewers: Roenicke pleased with bullpen In what has been a mostly rough season for Milwaukee, the bullpen stands out as a major positive. So when reliever Jim Henderson took the loss on Thursday night, manager Ron Roenicke wasn't too upset. "It's going to happen," Roenicke said. "I don't expect every time we go out there that we're going to put up zeros." Milwaukee's bullpen returned to form in Friday's 2-1 loss, as Brandon Kintzler, Michael Gonzalez and John Axford combined to allow just one hit in two scoreless innings. Collectively, the Brewers' relievers rank fifth in the Majors with a 3.01 ERA while holding opponents to a .232 average. D-backs: Goldschmidt hot at dish Paul Goldschmidt has been busy for the past week and a half, securing his status as a first-time All-Star. The 25-year-old first baseman, who was voted into the Midsummer Classic by the players, extended his hit streak to nine games by going 1-for-2 with a walk on Friday against the Brewers. Goldschmidt also collected an RBI in the contest, giving him eight during the streak. It also was his National League-leading 77th RBI on the year, which ranks third most in D-backs history before the All-Star break, with only Luis Gonzalez (86 in 2001) and Matt Williams (82 in 1999) driving in more runs in the first half of the season. Worth noting • A D-backs win Saturday would even the all-time series against the Brewers at 55-55. • Goldschmidt's double in the sixth inning on Friday preserved the D-backs' Major League leading streak of 77 straight games with an extra-base hit. • Only the Marlins have fewer road wins this season (14) than the Brewers, who are 15-29 away from Miller Park.

  11. Oh, crap. Then I definitely think he can bring back a good return. His first two starts were good, and he was even better tonight. I misread the Cots page.
  12. He's a free agent after this season, & since 2010 has posted a cumulative 3.58 ERA over 350+ IP. I think I'd rather see what he could bring back in a trade. If the Brewers can turn the minimal salary they spent on him into a solid prospect, I'd jump at the chance.
  13. Adron Chambers to 2nd. -Kolten Wong walks. Adron Chambers to 3rd. Ryan Jackson to 2nd. -Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Greg Garcia replaces Nick Greenwood. -Greg Garcia singles on a line drive to center fielder Anderson De La Rosa. Adron Chambers scores. Ryan Jackson scores. Kolten Wong scores. Greg Garcia to 2nd on the throw. -Defensive Substitution: Blake Davis replaces center fielder Anderson De La Rosa, batting 5th, playing center field. -Jamie Romak flies out to center fielder Blake Davis.
  14. If I'm a contending GM, Gorzelanny would look pretty good to me. If I needed a 4 or 5 starter, I'd probably be willing to part with something of value
  15. Gin & tonic... my favorite drink The gin has to be of good quality -- that's important Vodka & tonic is another winner.
  16. To allay any potential fears about the well-being of pretendastronaut: he's on vacation, & you will be returning to your regularly-scheduled game threads by Monday at the latest.

The story includes a link to a highlight video of Corbin's last start... an 8 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 10 K performance. Corbin looks to repeat history against Brewers D-backs lefty seeking win No. 11 of breakout All-Star season By Andrew Simon / MLB.com | 7/12/2013 2:22 AM ET Patrick Corbin opened his breakout 2013 season against the Brewers. On Friday night, the D-backs left-hander can craft a fitting first-half bookend against Milwaukee in the second meeting of a four-game series at Chase Field. Corbin carries a much higher profile now than he did on April 6, when he held the Brewers to two runs over six innings at Miller Park. At that time, he was coming off a rookie season that saw him post a 4.54 ERA while splitting time between the rotation and bullpen. The 23-year-old is now a National League All-Star with a 10-1 record and a 2.40 ERA that ranks fifth in the NL. Corbin went 9-0 over his first 11 starts, but the 10th victory took him seven more outings. He finally picked it up on Sunday, when he limited the Rockies to one run on three hits over eight innings. He walked one and tied a career high with 10 strikeouts. "He deserved it a long time ago," catcher Miguel Montero said of Corbin's 10th win. "He hadn't had the run support so it was tough, but he has been outstanding. He should be 15-0 to be honest. I'm pretty sure there's a lot of weight off his shoulders to get that 10th win." The D-backs will hope Corbin wastes no time getting to 11 as they try to finish strong in their final series before the All-Star break. Arizona had lost three in a row and saw its NL West lead shrink to 1 1/2 games over the surging Dodgers before pulling out a 5-3 win on Thursday night. The Brewers will counter with lefty Tom Gorzelanny (1-2, 2.12 ERA), who is making his third spot start of the season and second this week. He has spent most the year in the Milwaukee bullpen but excelled when given the chance to start. Gorzelanny took the loss on Sunday against the Mets but surrendered only two unearned runs over six innings, with New York scoring thanks to a pair of errors by third baseman Juan Francisco. He walked none and struck out eight, his most since July 1, 2011. "His stuff is better than what I remembered as a starter," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "The fastball is really live, and he mixes in the other pitches whenever he wants to and he can keep them down low in the zone. That's huge for trying to keep those guys out of the air and from driving the ball. I know he gave up some hits, but a couple of them were the tappers down third. He did a great job." Brewers: Braun likely out until second half Left fielder Ryan Braun was placed on the bereavement list before Thursday's game. Braun left the team to deal with a family medical issue and can remain on the list for a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven. That means he could return for Sunday's series finale, at the earliest. Milwaukee already had rested Braun on Wednesday, a day after he went 1-for-3 in his first game off the disabled list. He had missed the previous 26 games with a right thumb contusion. • Outfielder Khris Davis, the club's No. 14 prospect, was recalled to take Braun's spot on the active roster for Friday's game. The 25-year-old was 3-for-16 (.188) with two doubles in his first stint with Milwaukee this season and was hitting .250 with 11 home runs in 64 games for Triple-A Nashville. D-backs: De La Rosa added to 'pen Left-hander Eury De La Rosa was called up from Triple-A Reno on Thursday, adding a fresh arm a day after suffering a 14-inning loss to the Dodgers. Arizona optioned Tyler Skaggs, Wednesday's starter, to Class A Visalia. De La Rosa was 1-4 with a 5.14 ERA in 37 appearances for Reno this season, pitching in a hitter-friendly environment. The 23-year-old has a 2.87 ERA during his six seasons in the D-backs' system. • Manager Kirk Gibson turned to Brad Ziegler to close out Thursday's victory, a night after Heath Bell blew a save, Arizona's Major League-leading 19th of the season. Ziegler hit a batter and gave up a single but nailed down his second save of the season. Both have come this month. Worth noting • Gorzelanny twice pitched a scoreless inning of relief against the D-backs this season. He has a 4.63 ERA in six career starts against Arizona, but the most recent of those came in 2010, when he was with the Cubs. • Corbin has held the opposition to two runs or fewer in 14 of his 18 outings.

  19. You guys are all rude. I'm offended.
  20. I know this is more a language thing (not picking on you at all kalle), but I just sort of like this phrasing for some reason. ahhaha, should I have written "speed"? the fact is i think in italian and then traslate with ilarious (...) results. the italian for speed is "velocità", so here it is... Yep, "speed" would refer to how fast someone can run. "Velocity" is used to refer to how hard a pitcher can throw a baseball. Of course, you could also say "pitch speed" & that would mean the same thing as "velocity" -- I'm sure you enjoy all the not-hard-to-understand-at-all details of the English language, Kalle!
  21. This thread (hopefully) will be awesome heading toward the 2014 draft. Really looking forward to keeping tabs on Tyler's results.
  22. They seem to think he could be a better 2B than 3B and maybe that is the case, but it just seems like an odd move to try now. He is struggling with the bat and now he is going to try to move to a new position? Did we forget he spent his first 2 minor league seasons with the Brewers at 2b? He only moved off of it because Weeks was incumbent and not going anywhere anytime soon. This leaves Toronto with a fixed 2b and a need at 3b....sorta. Bautista and Encarnacion both are maneuverable to play 3b. Nope, obviously I didn't forget that. I said I don't think he'll translate well to 2B. I think he was always a bad fit there, like Coulter is at catcher, but it's the Brewers -- square peg/round hole defensive assignment strategy...
  23. Oooh -- I like this. This definitely needs to become a thing.
