  1. I have no problem with him pulling Narvy after 7. He still makes me nervous about his tendency to give up the big inning.
  2. I would think that unless it's a very severe break that Gomez could be back at some point in September. The fact that he's broken it before could belie a more serious issue requiring a plate/surgery however. I love the way the guy plays, but his body takes a beating a la Jenkins.
  3. You can question his lineups, in game decisions, etc., but in my view he's better than Macha by far. Under Macha, this team would have likely imploded during and after the long losing streak. In the two years that Macha was here, you could tell in the body language that the team was going through the motions long before game 162. No matter how terrible Counsell is there is a segement that defends him yet Kotsay can do no right and shouldn't be on the team. This is true, though I've noticed that the Counsell backers are starting to stay pretty quiet, when in the past they'd defend him. Kotsay really isn't that bad as a 5th outfielder, but Counsell is a wasted roster spot. He's been on base once this summer (unless he pinch ran at some point), when he got plunked by a pitch.
  4. Bullet dodged. This move has started the dominoes falling though. It's time for Melvin to move if he's going to. I think Furcal has to be the target.
  5. That should not be enough to keep him around. It's been nearly a month since he's drawn a walk. He shouldn't be kept around due to his veteran presence or his Wisconsin roots either (ask Augie how that worked for him in '82).
  6. Furcal has been Counsell-esque at the plate- like one hit since his return. I think if you get Furcal and Blake, you have to keep Yuni just in case. I'd rather dump Counsell and option Dillard. Do you really need 7 right handed relievers? Seems like overkill to me.
  7. Right- but he's closer to 40 than 30. I would expect his numbers to be below his career norms. He has no power whatsoever either. Seems like giving up something of value for him as a utility guy (You guys don't seriously want Carroll starting at short, do you?) would be a waste as Wilson is younger, and to this point has outperformed his career stats by a lot. If they are going to get an old guy from the Dodgers, it had better be Furcal. He's better in the field, and there's a decent chance he could recapture something at the plate. RockCo you summed my feelings up perfectly. I love Carroll but not as anything more than a super utility IF. If we're dealing with the Dodgers, Furcal should be THE target. However, I would like to get Furcal AND Carroll with Carroll taking over Craig Counsell's super utility role on the team moving forward. I'll go all in with Blake and Furcal, but it's not my money... I would think that you could get both of them for little or nothing if you kicked in most of the cash ($8 million or so, I believe). Blake is hurt right now, and basically has the same skill set as Gamel, but he would add a needed power bat on the bench.
  8. I got a little case of deja-vu until I read the article and saw that he died a few weeks back. Sad to lose another Braves legend. Not many of these guys left from the '57 and '58 teams.
  9. His ability to get on base consistently is his biggest strength as a hitter. Isn't that what Counsell is supposedly here for? The major issue that I'd have with the Carroll acquisition is that it would almost certainly mean that Wilson would go. If you could guarantee me that Counsell would get DFA after the trade, I'd be on board.
  10. Hit major league pitching. Carroll's .277 career BA, .356 career OBP is much better than what Josh Wilson can produce. Wilson has a career .281 OBP in MLB. That is horrid Right- but he's closer to 40 than 30.
  11. I don't get the Carroll thing either.... He seems like a slightly younger version of Counsell at this point. What can he do that Wilson cannot?
  12. We could right a significant wrong from the past. Talking about righting a significant wrong from the past, it's too bad Joe Thatcher is hurt. Pre-injury, he was exactly what the Brewers need.
  13. Again, Desmond has a .269 OBP this season. His career OBP in over 900 MLB at-bats is .295 Understood. However, he is only 25 and in his 2nd full year in the bigs. In 2011, Desmond's OBP is .269 and Betancourt's OBP is .262. I said the AVG/OBP/OPS would likely be a push in 2011, but gaining the ability to swipe a base and the D at SS would be worth it, assuming it doesn't cost something ridiculous. What am I missing? Desmond seems to be below average at the plate and bad in the field. He led NL SS in errors last season.
  14. I'm not in the sabermetrics crowd by any means, but I hope that the Pirates start losing for the Brewers sake. I'd kind of like them to sweep the Reds though, because I still think the Reds are the second most talented team in the division. It would be nice to be 5 or so games ahead of them.
  15. I honestly think that Molitor could have played a few more years. I remember being upset when he retired instead of finishing his career with the Brewers. Had the Brewers still been in the A.L., it may have been a different story.
  16. The only thing the Brewers should be selling at this point is Counsell's contract to the Nippon Ham Fighters.
  17. A Loe leverage situation. I'll bet on a 1-2-3 clean inning.
  18. I'd rather give Green a shot than give anything meaningful for Betemit. Heck, since we are talking about Braves flops, I'd rather look into Andy Marte, but he is in Pittsburgh's system now.
  19. He hasn't drawn a walk in nearly a month either- not for a lack of trying, but guys are throwing him strikes. I know that it's trendy to bag on Yuni, but Counsell is a complete waste of a roster spot at this point. He brings nothing to the table whatsoever.
  20. The Pirates are getting hyped plenty, turn on ESPN for 5 minutes and you'll see a feel good piece on them. I'm happy for their fans, but look at that rotation, a bunch of journeymen pitching out of their minds. If a couple of these guys start pitching to what you would expect or a couple bats get injured, things will probably fall apart quickly. This team reminds me more of the Brewers circa 1997 than a true playoff contender. I'd be shocked if they can sustain what they've been doing, but I've been wrong before. If the Brewers can maintain some of the dominance they've had over these guys the past few years, it's going to be a moot point.
  21. I wonder if he could still play a passable third base.
  22. This is looking like one of Soup's 'quality starts'. Wolf not looking good again.
  23. What about the one rocket foul ball down the RF line that is mandatory in a Counsell at bat? OK, hit the ball hard in play. Generally Counsel at bats have three outcomes- a walk, a weak pop up to the left, or a ground out.
  24. I actually hate the Cardinals more than the Cubs at this point, mostly because of Pujols. Part of me pities Cubs fans- that franchise is the definition of snakebitten- hopefully Pujols signs there and then follows the script and becomes an injury riddled shell of his former self. If the Brewers don't take it, I'm pulling for the Reds or Pirates.
  25. Loe and Counsell. Last year I was a big booster of Loe, but this year, he's warn out his welcome. I always curse at the TV when he comes in. I know Counsell is a favorite here, but I have absolutely no faith that he will hit the ball hard.
