  1. I think that there is a huge difference between corking a bat or greasing a ball and chemically altering your body to increase muscle mass/twitch speed. If you do this, any of your accomplishments should be taken with a grain of salt. I can't stand cheaters or liars, and juicers are horrible in both aspects. I did get a kick of the ironic description of 'pure hitter' for Ramirez.
  2. For anyone advocating HOF status for Ramirez, what sabermetric stat has Bill James devised to 'normalize' his career stats? If Pete Rose and Joe Jackson are not in, this cheat who was caught twice red handed certainly is not.
  3. This guy is not a Hall of Famer by any stretch of the imagination. He is now a twice proven cheat, and was likely juicing for his entire career. Case closed.
  4. Maybe if the Brewers are double digits games out of the playoffs. If they are in playoff contention, I highly doubt that they would deal Prince to a potential playoff opponent.
  5. Though I can understand the opposing arguments, personally I don't see the harm in allowing the guys to have a beer or two in the clubhouse after the game. Seems like kind of a moot point anyway since most of these guys seem to get out of there ASAP after the games. Can you imagine if they'd had a dry clubhouse in '82? There would have been an all out revolt.
  6. Beachy looked good today, but I wonder what the Brewer all time record is facing rookies the first time they've seen them. Going back several years, they have always struggled in this situation, which is why I fully expect Minor to shut them down on Wednesday.
  7. well.... in general, I agree. Its a long season, alot can happen, we have alot of talent. etc etc. But also we can see the writing on the wall with some players: Kotsay has not been much for 3-4 years, Betancourt hasn't been much of a fielder yet in his career, Nieves is a horrible hitter. These guys aren't going to magically/mystically transform their game. And then there is Gomez, who we hope will magically/mystically transform his game but he sure looks like the same old Gomez Sure, our lineup should be much better when Hart & Lucroy return (plus Greinke!). But in the meantime, we could be digging a huge hole to climb out of. None of that is panic... Point taken. I agree that Kotsay should not be playing every day. That's not what he was signed on to do, and at any rate with Morgan playing today, it looks like Roenicke will be making some adjustments. I am a little worried about this Braves series. The Brewers have always had problems with guys they're seeing for the first time (Beachy today and probably Minor on Weds.) and they've always been brutal against Atlanta as well. If they don't take at least two games in this series, I'll start to get a little nervous.
  8. This makes absolutely no sense on either end. First of all, Yost saw Suppan stink up the joint firsthand, and that was three years ago. You'd think that he'd talk the suits out of this (though an updated 2011 'Soup pitched great' soundbite would be awesome). Second, did Suppan lose his money in bad investments or something? I know that he owned a restaurant, and those can be a money pit- I wonder if he made some bad investments. Why else would someone of his age and current ability who has banked so much cash want to go back to AAA. He should be fully vested in the pension plan already.
  9. I think that some need to calm down. It's a long season. I mean really- Jermaine Dye? Chris Dickerson sucked for 20 some games last year, and all that I heard was 'small sample'....a sweep in the Cincy bandbox, and panic sets in after three games.
  10. I don't understand the hate on here for Edmonds. I thought that he played his rear off for the Crew last season and put up some decent numbers. Seemed to be a good team guy too. I guess people can't get past the fact that he was a Cardinal or something.
  11. I stopped watching wrestling for the most part at some point in the 80's. That said, how can you top Wrestlemania III?
  12. Wes Obermueller and Ben Ford- on opening day, none the less? Good God, I must have repressed one from my memory. And to think that people are worried about shortstop and the Gomez/Morgan situation in the outfield.
  13. So for the record....before things get underway - have we decided who is the worst MLB player ever? Betancourt or Kotsay.... or is it a tie?
  14. FYI. Jose K had a positive defensive 'WAR' every year he was in Milwaukee. If that doesn't give one pause when considering the validity of defensive statistics, I don't know what does.
  15. Yost didn't 'ruin' Sheets period. Most of his injuries were flukish things like the vertigo or whatever it was- wasn't there a hand issue as well?
  16. How do you explain someone like Craig Counsell having a good walk rate then? Or Daric Barton, or Nick Johnson, or Scott Hatteberg, or any other hitter with a good eye/low power combo? Having good plate discipline is definitely a skill, and it's one of the most important skills a player can have. Some guys just take more pitches than others. I guarantee you that if I told every hitter not to take the bat off their shoulder until a strike is called that their walk rates would increase. At the same time, a good question would be whether their OBP would increase. If a guy lets hittable pitches go by in an attempt to walk, that would seem counterproductive. At the same time, a guy who is able to work the count and be in a position to get a good pitch to hit should be an advantage. I'd be interested to see how a hitter's walk rate correlates with their batting average and home runs.
  17. I will agree with you there. Younger guys tend to have worse plate discipline, and generally start to draw more walks as they improve their offensive prowess and develop a better 'eye'. Robin Yount would be a good example of this- look at his walk totals up until his mid 20's. This is why I'm willing to give Gomez another shot. Obviously, his offensive production last season was not good, but he just has so many tools, I think it would be foolish to give up on him at this point. I'm not convinced that his future is that of a slap hitter either, he's got the frame where he may be able to hit 15-20 homers down the road. Everyone has to remember that he's just 25 years old. I will concede that this is probably the make or break season for him.
  18. I don't know about the acoustic guitar requirement, but to me the most 'epic' change of pace song ever is 'Come Sail Away' by Styx. You go from the piano beginning that sounds like the Mr. Belvidere theme song to a dual guitar arena rocker. I dare you to find anyone who owned the cassette who hasn't fast forwarded to 'the good part'. Another one would be 'American Woman' by the Guess Who (the full version). I also thought of Lionel Richie's 'Say You, Say Me', which has an brief but totally rocking guitar bridge that elevates it from elevator music for about 20 seconds.
  19. I think that Prince is going to find a soft market this winter. This depends solely on how well he plays this year- if he has a monster season, he'll get paid. If he has another down season like last year, he may regret turning down the $100 million.
  20. I don't think that it's an impossibility that J.J. comes back this year. Frankly, I think that's the only way he will come back- let's face it, he was screwed over pretty badly when he was demoted down to AAA solely to mess with his service time- I doubt that he would come back here as a free agent. Obviously, we don't know what went down behind the scenes, but Hardy was a very popular player (among most fans), and though not flashy, probably the best defensive shortstop this team has had since Yount. Best case, the Orioles tank (though I think that they may be better than expected this year) and would be willing to move Hardy in July. If Yuni isn't getting the job done, why not go for Hardy?
  21. In my opinion, it takes no real skill whatsoever to walk. Obviously, it's the trendy thing with OBP and Moneyball, but walks are a product of the pitcher throwing strikes. Do you think Prince walks so much because he has a tremendous eye at the plate, or that the pitchers are pitching around him? Dickerson has walked at a decent clip in his career, but he also strikes out a ton. Kind of like the #9 hitter on the little league team who goes up to bat- knees shaking- with the coach telling him not to swing. Does he walk a lot? Yes. Does he strike out a lot? Yes. At the major league level, a guy who walks and strikes out a lot had better be a slugger, otherwise in my view he's not aggressive enough at the plate. I wonder how many of Dickerson's K's have been of the looking variety? I can argue until I'm blue in the face with Moneyball guys that walks are overrated and strikeouts are underrated, but neither of us will ever change our mind. I disagree with the mantra that 'a walk is as good as a hit' in all cases except for the leadoff batter of the inning or when the bases are loaded.
  22. I'd go with Hardy, but he'd probably have to be acquired this season with a lot of fences mended. I doubt if he would come back by choice. Say what you want, but Hardy was taken for granted in a big way when he was here.
  23. Just because Dickerson drew a lot of walks his first year in Cincinnati (still a mostly a product of the pitcher if you ask me), doesn't make him a better player than Gomez. He's over three years older, and showed absolutely nothing during his time in Milwaukee with the bat. If you put Gomez and Dickerson out there, which do you think that most GM's would snap up? Personally, I'm more upset about letting Boggs go.
  24. What did Dickerson show on defense during his tenure in Milwaukee? Gomez is still fairly young, and showed flashes in Minnesota and even last season. There is upside there where there is little to none with Dickerson.
  25. All I know is that Granderson had better play through his injury, because Dickerson is going to go all Lou Gehrig on him. Why would you think that Gomez is a sure thing to fail? The same folks who liked Cameron seem to be those who like Dickerson. Personally, I think that 'advanced' stats overvalue both of them. Cammy was a streaky player and his bat disappeared for weeks at a time. His defense was good, but I remember some crucial misplays as well. I think that his 'leadership' was overrated as well. That clubhouse was in major disarray in 2008, and had the Mets not given it away, the Brewers would not have made the playoffs. Dickerson is mostly overrated by the stats because he put up a decent half season as a rookie, since then he's done nothing to prove that he can match that production- or stay healthy enough to so do, for that matter. He showed nothing in a Brewers uniform in any aspect of the game whatsoever. You can use the 'small sample' argument all that you want, but the Reds wouldn't have given him away for Edmonds had they thought that he had any upside. It's not like he was some green 22 year old kid either.
