  1. Bill Hall was never this bad. Think about it... we are 37 games into the season and a guy who has been at or near the top of the lineup for about 90% of them has 20 hits. Think about that for a second. I don't give him much credit for the walks either because he's been so passive at the plate and has a ton of plate appearances. I'd be willing to bet that almost every one of these walks was of the 6 pitch or less variety.
  2. I personally think that Hamels is going to be the Dodgers' primary target this off-season. The Phillies have roughly $60 million tied up for next year in Lee, Halliday and Papelbon, and their offense is pathetic (granted sans Howard and Utley, but it wasn't great last year with them). I'm not sure that they will want to dump another $20 million+ in their starting rotation at this point.
  3. There is a reason that the Brewers are leading the league in HBP this season and two of the past three, and it's not some crazy statistical fluke. They simply do not protect their hitters.
  4. I hope when the Mets come here that someone drills Wright. They got by one game, but this isn't something that will be forgotten. They should, but I bet that they won't. I'm still waiting on Tommy Hanson to get his from a few years ago. That's one thing that I liked about Yost, he would have definitely had someone retaliate.
  5. You call it defeatist, I call it reality. The Brewers can't compete to keep their own talent. Was it defeatist not to make a legitimate effort to re-sign Sabathia or Fielder? Because we both know a serious offer was not made in either case. It is defeatist to me. This team is currently fielding a payroll in the range of $100 million, a good chunk of which has been fueled by the attendance boom. There is no way that they are losing money either. If that's the case, and they are getting more TV money next year, there is no reason whatsoever that they should not be able to make a realistic offer to Greinke. I get the feeling that they have lowballed him thus far. Greinke is not going to get a contract in the Pujols/Fielder range. No one will give a pitcher more than 6 years. At most, he will get something like Cain got- maybe 20% or so more at the extreme, the Brewers can afford that. Bottom line, if the Brewers have two ace quality pitchers, they should be in the mix for the next several years. If they let Greinke walk and then resign Marcum for much cheaper, I'm not going to be sold the bill of goods that their PR machine churns out over the winter, because it's a profit maximizing move, not a solid baseball one. In that event, Attanasio had better get his bean counters out doing a marginal revenue analysis based on an attendance drop in the event of a 65 win season.
  6. If this continues, the Angels will probably be dispatching a team of private investigators to the D.R. in an attempt to void the contract. That would be awesome.
  7. But my point is why sign Greinke long term now? Call it what you wiill, but this is rebuilding time. Not that the brewers can't field a competitive team while they're rebuilding, but even with Greinke I don't consider them to be a WS contender for a couple years. They are currently 5 games back in a bad division so I'm not sure that I would concede the season just yet. As for being a WS contender, the Cards were steaming garbage for about 4 and a half months last season, yet they won it all. Get hot at the right time and you can make a big time run, especially with pitching. Bottom line, it's pretty defeatist to concede that you cannot compete to keep your own talent. Especially with the attendance boom that the Brewers have enjoyed for the past several seasons. To me if the Brewers don't sign Grienke and give us the same excuses, why bother? It's trendy to like the Brewers now, but one really bad season, or a few that are mediocre and the bandwagon fans will all jump off. In the 80's, it took only a few years for attendance to bottom out after the boom of 82/83, same thing during the mid/late 90's. This is not an aging team, and most of the pieces are already in place to compete. Attanasio would be best served to make an honest effort to keep those pieces in place.
  8. Most likely much ado about nothing, because the Brewers don't seem to retaliate very often when someone is drilled. Going further, if the pitcher on the other team gets ejected, I don't ever remember further retaliation under Roenicke (or Macha for that matter).
  9. I think that this rating encompasses everything, basically it's a 'best position player' rating. If that's the case, Rickey should be right up there. He was an absolute game changer at the top of the lineup.
  10. The fact that Scioscia allowed this to happen under his watch shows that he's on tenuous footing as well. Maybe St. Albert is angling for a player-manager gig.
  11. I don't know, this incident is already getting a lot of coverage. Accident or not, I certainly think it's more egregious than a simple bump. I bet he gets the book thrown at him. I could see him getting a double digit game suspension.
  12. Looks like we have the first Pujols scapegoat.
  13. If we are going on strictly hitting, I'd say Molitor without much thought.
  14. Yeah. I've actually killed some time doing this before. I'm glad Bonds is ranked as low as he is. From reading message boards, I'd have thought that people would have put him much higher. The top three look pretty good to me (though personally I'd switch Ruth and Williams, but can't really complain about the Babe at #1). I think that Mays and Gehrig are a tad too high and Musial/Hornsby are a tad too low though.
  15. Glad to see that Bonds didn't crack the Top 20.
  16. What's really the big attraction of it? It's 'free'... I swear people would wait in line for two hours if someone was giving away boxes of Kleenex that were 'limited edition'.
  17. ESPN is garbage, and any bashing or hatred of them is warranted in my opinion. It's been this way since the Disney takeover in the mid 90's. They create a story and then interject themselves into it, creating controversies to fill the hours of gabathons on their 'networks'. Their 'personalities' are hack wannabe comedians who appeal to the most casual of sports fans. I won't even mention the East Coast bias. The only thing that I will watch on those networks are live sporting events, and even those are nauseating a good amount of the time Back on topic, looks like MLB is taking the hard line here. I'm still unsure of why they would throw one of their most marketable stars under the bus if they weren't positive that he was in violation of the drug policy. What do they have to gain by this?
  18. they could have just as easily done it in the evening so it makes the 10pm news. that way more people would have the possibility of participating. I think that time was chosen to ensure that not many people would participate (less people turned away empty handed) but they will still get the publicity that they wanted. It will still be on the 10 o'clock news. Local media recycles the same stories all day. Hit early and you get the morning news, noon, 5, 6 and 10- plus the drive time radio. Start at 5 and you will likely get your cub reporter sent out to Miller Park. Start later in the day, and that cub reporter may be sent to cover 'Breaking News' like a manure spill on I-43 or something.
  19. The early start time was likely chosen to synch this 'event' to get the desired hype from the morning television and radio shows.
  20. This is a publicity stunt, pure and simple. If you look at it that way, last year's debacle was a smashing success.
  21. Maybe they've found a shortstop for the short term. With one swing of the bat, Maysonet came within two of matching Rickie's YTD RBI output.
  22. In 1990, Jim Gantner was still recovering from the shredded knee thanks to Marcus Lawton, Billy Spiers was hurt and Sheffield was at 3rd. I remember an opening day Keystone Combo of Kiki Diaz/Billy Bates. That one would be tough to top. A little before my time, but I know that in the early days of the franchise, the 'Little General' Ron Theobald was a regular at 2b and Rick Auerbach was the starter at SS. That was a brutal offensive combo as well.
  23. He reminds me of Guillermo Mota. Hopefully they have a similar trajectory in their Brewer careers. If I remember right, Mota was horrible for awhile and actually pitched pretty well down the stretch.
