  1. Augie is a very nice guy. I will say that. As for Johnny Logan, I agree. I've heard that he's been having some health issues recently as well. The guy was a fixture for the Braves. He was kind of their Gumby. Not to mention that he's been a part of the Milwaukee baseball community for years, working for the Brewers as a scout and coach. Both he and Del Crandall should be honored while they can still enjoy it.
  2. Castro was an employee of the team for a long time, but when he played, outside of maybe two seasons he wasn't very good. Larry Haney was bullpen coach for about the same amount of time. Rock has been the announcer forever. I could see him warranting strong consideration if he stays on another 10 years or so. Larry Hisle is a good community guy, and if he wouldn't have ripped his shoulder out on a throw, he may have been right there. However, he only had one (it was a great one too) full season in Milwaukee, and he doesn't warrant any votes. As for Augustine, I have no idea what people are thinking. He was OK a few seasons in the 70's and was horrible thereafter. People associate him with the '82 team, but not many seem to know that he was dropped from the playoff roster. Due to the votes that these guys have gotten, I would bet that employees of FSW and the Brewers are voting. It's painfully apparent that most of them don't know what they are doing. Why do they even have a walk of fame if they aren't going to add anyone to it? Bottom line, they need to change the process. The current voters are not going to change how they vote. I think that they should give each poster here one Brewers and one Braves vote. Induct the top vote getter from each next summer. It'd never happen, but I'm sure that we could do a better job than team employees/local media.
  3. I doubt that Cecil knows any more than the rest of us. That said, it would be funny to have Rock ask Prince if he's 'talked to his old man yet' again. As for Boras, I have a tough time seeing his clients getting close to what they are demanding. We are less than 6 weeks until pitchers/catchers report. Prince will probably get paid, but I bet it won't be as much as he expects. There is no way Madson will even sniff what the rumored deal with the Phillies amounted to.... Edwin Jackson is not going to get big money either, he throws hard, but he's nothing more than a mid-rotation guy... Carlos Pena should have taken arby. Ironically, the one Boras client who will come out smelling like a rose is K-Rod.
  4. I don't think that Rizzo is a slam dunk by any means. Granted, he's very young and seasoned for his age, but at the same time he didn't set the world on fire during his cup of coffee last year. Going further, baseball history is riddled with guys who put up huge numbers in the PCL and turned out as complete flops. This may turn out to be a great trade for the Cubs, but I wouldn't use it as a centerpiece of Theo's nomination for executive of the year just yet.
  5. I don't know. The schedule gets incredibly brutal in two weeks. This team is looking like an NIT team at this point, if that.
  6. How does Richie Sexson get no votes? The more I look at this list, the worse it looks. I really think that the fans could do a much better job. Maybe they should let season ticket holders vote or something. With the unwarranted love that guys have gotten who have been associated with the team in recent years (Augustine, Hisle, Schroeder, Sveum), it's obvious that team employees are voting...who are the two people who voted for Bill Castro? May as well vote for Larry Haney and Reggie Cleveland if Castro is deserving.
  7. The Badgers are officially a joke. To me, Bennett-ball has run it's course. I'm starting to hear a lot more rumblings of people who have tired of the Ryan era as well.
  8. For the Braves, Adcock and Crandall are locks. Johnny Logan as well for me, since he was his generation's Jim Gantner. For the Brewers, I'd say that Bamberger, Scott and Higuera are shoo ins. I'd personally vote for Oglivie, Plesac, Caldwell, Slaton and Moore as well at some point. Good god, this is the Miller Park walk of fame, not some exclusive club. It's not like they are giving these guys millions of dollars for the rights to induct them or something. One or two guys should be going in per year for the first several years, instead of nobody.
  9. Now that Theo is in charge, the Brewers should just forfeit the next ten seasons. The impossible task of matching wits with this baseball god will just serve to demoralize the fanbase. Better to just close up shop and hope to retool once Epstein moves on.
  10. These voters make the BBWAA look like geniuses. How long is it going to take for whoever is in charge of this sham to realize that these people aren't going to change their voting patterns? The results look roughly the same as last year, and they belie the fact that these people aren't very knowledgeable of Milwaukee baseball history.
  11. Once again, no one received the votes. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/136811373.html If you ask me, this process is a sham, and begs tons of questions. Who is the idiot who keeps voting for Wes Obermueller? Why did Jerry Augustine receive more votes than George Scott once again (or why did he get any votes at all)? Why is Larry Hisle getting so many votes when he had one good season in Milwaukee? Most importantly, when did these voters start watching baseball? I could go on all day... I think that it's time to strip these experts of their voting privileges.
  12. The longer this drags on, the worse Boras looks. I'm loving it. The only big client of his that has signed that I know of was Madson with the Phillies.... oh wait.
  13. It's nice to have a power bat available to pinch hit representing the tying run. The Brewers haven't had anyone like this since Branyan, who coincidentally is available.
  14. I like this deal for the Marlins based on risk/reward. As it's a contract year for Zambrano, you have to think that he will at least put forth an effort to behave and pitch well. If not, they are only out $3 million.
  15. Barker was the 21st century version of Billy Jo Robidoux, without the catchy name. Powell lost a lot of credibility to me when he was still pumping Barker's ROY candidacy in mid May after he was handed the starting job and was clearly in over his head. I had to confirm that I was not seeing things a few years back when he resurfaced in MLB, that one was nearly as surprising to me as Rob Deer's comeback with the Padres. I honestly thought that there was another Kevin Barker a la Brian Giles, etc.
  16. To me, it seems that the whole 'newspaper' business model is a dying breed- internet or not. They have to be getting slaughtered by Craigslist, etc. for classified revenue and I would guess that circulation is way down. With most news sites, I don't get why you would buy the physical newspaper when most of the content is available online much sooner. The only people that I know of who still subscribe to newspapers are either coupon clippers or are older and not 'wired'. A buck a week seems a little steep to me. I'd think that they'd get many more paid subscribers if they reduced the price and/or made it an impulse type buy 'app'. The problem with that would be that there would be no constant revenue stream that a weekly subscription would bring. I've seen the newspapers take a lot of different approaches (withholding 'premium' content, holding articles back a day, a barrage of banner/pop up ads, charging for content, etc.), but based on the 'strategy changes' that I've seen over the years, I don't think any of them will stem the death knell of the traditional newspaper as has existed in the past.
  17. I can't believe that Ax has not gotten an official endorsement offer from the makers of Axe (stripper perfume for men) body spray yet.
  18. I just can't buy the supplement excuse. It seems that these guys go to the well with some variation of this one whenever they are caught. If I believe that Braun took some laced Extenze, then I couldn't discount the claim that Palmeiro thought he was getting B12 injected by Tejada, or that Lee DeRamus really lived on a diet of tons of poppy seed bagels (remember that one?).
  19. If I had the talent, I'd do an avatar superimposing the tool fan's beast mod head unto Nyjer's beast mod body, helmet and all. What a disgrace.http://media.jsonline.com/images/26690709-ap_michigan_st_wisconsin_basketball.jpg
  20. Yeah, Pierre was a really good player for a few years. It seems that often times good/solid players who are wrongly viewed as elite players become whipping boys for the internet baseball community. He's one of those guys who has a classic anti-Beane profile but he was extremely good at defense, base-running, and hitting for a high average with singles. If Aoki were a mid-career Juan Pierre, he would be an awesome signing. Unlike Pierre, I don't think Aoki will have a chance at hitting .326 in MLB ball. Exactly. This is where the 'advanced statistics' lose me a bit. I can see the warts in Pierre's game, namely a low walk rate and a noodle arm (not mentioning that his SB success rate was 'only' ~75%). At the same time, you don't average 200 knocks a season if you don't have talent. On the other hand, you have a guy like David DeJesus who has a little pop with a better arm and walk rate, but less speed and average. I don't understand how he has a higher career offensive WAR than Pierre in 3,000 some less PA. Bottom line in my view, WAR underrates Pierre and overrates DeJesus.... I'd say that the truth is somewhere in between.
  21. As long as Gamel doesn't turn in a Kevin Barker-esque first half, I think he will be OK. If/when he starts hitting, the question marks and pressure will dissipate quickly.
  22. The Star Tribune in MSP started doing this a few months ago. I only visit the site by accident now. I can understand the motivation behind charging for content, especially after both sites tried the full court press of 'in your face' banner ads first... but at the same time, it's hard for me to justify paying for something that I've gotten for free for years. Yes, I'm cheap.
  23. I don't see the comparison, but I'd take Pierre in his prime, Pierre gets a bad rap. I never understood the contempt for Pierre either. It's like David DeJesus stole all the love or something. Any guy that averaged around 200 hits and 50 steals a year for several years is OK by me, I guess his walk rate wasn't high enough.
  24. The only thing that Braun has gone on record as saying is 'it's B.S'. He's probably telling the truth either way. Either it is 'B.S.'.... or maybe he's referring to a Boatload of Steroids.
  25. I'll just be glad when Prince signs somewhere because I'm getting tired of reading JSOnline blog posts from Tom H. where he spends half his words trumpeting his 'guesses' on how things will play out. He acts like he was the only guy in Wisconsin who predicted that Prince was leaving the Brewers.
