  1. When a guy's OBP his high, but literally made up of 88% singles and walks, I don't think that it can be taken at face value. I realize the importance of OBP, but Carroll is a mirage in my view. Last year, he had to have hit the softest .290 in baseball history. Seventeen RBI in over 500 PA, with over 100 of those with RISP. Really? (Yes I know, RBI are meaningless...)
  2. If I'm the Brewers, I'd do a 6/$140 deal, with a $30 million vesting option for a 7th year based on games played in 2017. I'd also allow Prince an out after 2014. To get this done, there would have to be some creative deferring of money- I'm talking some of it ten years out.
  3. Very good news. Whenever I hear these stories, I always think of Gus Polidor, who was gunned down in Venezuela while protecting his wife and child from carjackers.
  4. RBI are heavily dependent on the lineup you are in Not completely. Yuni is probably on one end of the spectrum while Carroll is on the other. One of the major reasons that Carroll has never been a run producer is because he's a singles hitter who is demonstratively worse at hitting with RISP over his career. Yuni drives in a decent amount of runs because he gets lots of opportunities and hits about the same with RISP. Is Yuni as 'good' a run producer as his RBI totals would indicate? No. Is Carroll as 'bad' as his totals would indicate? No, but the truth is somewhere in between. Yes, Carroll has a good OBP over his career, but even if you bat him leadoff as a 'table setter', he's not going to average two lead off at bats per game even hitting after the pitcher.
  5. I find it ironic that Yuni's terrible OBP inspired so much loathing but some of those same haters diminished the value of his power, yet Carroll's got the great OBP Yuni seemingly may never have but now some are saying he's a lousy investment, presumably because he has no power? I'd take the solid OBP, frankly. Not saying much, but if it came down to Yuni or Carroll, I'm taking Yuni. I just don't see how Carroll is an everyday player at SS at this point in his career. Barmes is a FAR inferior offensive player, even though he's strong on the D side, so I don't get how anyone including himself could see him as worth $1.5M more per year than Carroll. Barmes is probably one of the best defensive SS in the N.L. from what I've seen. He'll get paid based on that alone. If Carroll can get 2 years, I have no doubt that Barmes will get 3.
  6. Still seems a tad pricey, but I'm sure Philly fans are relieved after that Madson rumor. He has a better track record than Madson that's for sure. I wonder what Madson will end up getting. Chalk up one 'fail' for Boras, with hopefully more to come.
  7. I think that this is a case of the Braves 'selling high'. Both Prado and Jurrjens are due for significant raises in the next couple of years and I'm not sure that either of them is worth what they will command on the open market.
  8. From keeping up on the news a tad this week, I gather we can cross Texas, Baltimore and the LA Dodgers of the list. Who does that leave? I suppose Washington, Toronto, San Francisco and the Cubs and Angels, with perhaps one of the monopoly money Eastern seaboard teams getting in on things for an expensive DH.
  9. Barmes will be demanding 3 years/$15 million now. If that's the case, I hope the Brewers stay away. This just confirms that the Orioles got an absolute steal with Hardy.
  10. Please clarify. He's got a career OBP of .356, and I can't imagine his PAs as a bench player would outweigh his PAs as a "regular." Sorry, I meant OPS+.
  11. I'm guessing it's because his career .356 OBP, and his ability to play 2b, SS, 3b, OF all pretty well. He doesn't offer power, but seems to still have plenty to offer. I don't get why you wouldn't want him. He can't hit with RISP. I don't buy that the OBP is sustainable as he gets closer to 40 either. He had only 20 EBH in over 500 plate appearances last year- he's strictly a singles hitter and he's never had a OBP above league average as a regular. What is there to like?
  12. I'm sweating this one out a little because Melvin sometimes moves quickly in FA. I just don't get the fascination with this guy.
  13. Greinke was apparently offered $100 million last year by Washington and still vetoed the trade. I don't care what his personality is, that will likely be the starting point. He may go a tad lower, but you're fooling yourself if you think he will go 4/60. This begs the question, is he worth $100 million... based on last year, I'm not sure.
  14. Hopefully this happens- everything except the trade with the Brewers, that is. I'd love to see Pujols leave the Cardinals, Reyes is overrated and Buehrle is old.

  17. Whether or not his brother comes with Mike Maddux is an intrigueing choice as I'm not sure there has ever been a successful pitcher/pitching coach as a manager In my view, the best manager in Brewer history (in his first stint) was a pitching coach- George Bamberger.
  18. Why would you want to trade Hart for Prado just to save a few million. Coming into 2011 he was pretty comparable career wise to McGehee. He wasn't much better than McGehee last year either.
  19. Hanley was worse than Yuni last year. I'm not sure if I would take him for 'free' with that contract.
  20. I thought that Rogers was on the suspended list and is out of options/can become a minor league free agent when he gets removed and not stashed back on the 40 man. I'm assuming he gets one more camp to show his wares and stay healthy. Pretty much do or die for him at this point.
  21. Simply put in my view, Hart at his salary >>>> Reyes long term at an exorbitant salary. In my opinion, you win with power. Take away Prince's 30-40 homers a year then dump Hart's 20-30. Assume that you use the freed up money to sign Reyes. That doesn't leave any money to sign a power bat. Even if the money was there, what free agent outfielder with power would come significantly cheaper than Hart? Look at what guys (Werth, etc.) have been getting on the open market. Hart for $9 million per is an absolute steal if you ask me. Do you trade Hart for an unproven guy to save some money? With Hart gone, besides Braun and Weeks, who on the 40 man roster as it's constructed would be able to be penciled in for 20+ homers? Frankly, who could you pencil in with confidence to hit even double digit homers? As far as I can tell, there are no true power bats in the minors. Gamel may be able to get you low 20's best case, but even that could be a pipe dream. Casey could bounce back with 15-20 again, but I'm not even sure that he will be around.
  22. As someone mentioned above, Cuban defectors have generally had a poor track record. Outside of the Hernandez brothers, most have busted. I think by opening the academy in the DR, the Brewers are going about things in the right way. I'd rather them invest the millions in like facilities for several years than to give one guy bu-cu dollars based on potential.
  23. Not a bad deal. I'd so a similar one for JHJ in a heartbeat.
  24. SI's Jon Heyman tweeted early this morning that Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. agreed to a four-year, $44MM deal with Madson, but told agent Scott Boras he'd need the approval of team CEO David Montgomery, which still has not been given. I can't imagine why there would be a delay...
  25. I bet Bowden was low on Madsen, and will be on others. This is not 2002, and the owners are flush with cash. I don't know. The Madson deal definitely got things off to a crazy start. This is the biggest head scratcher that I can remember since Gary Matthews Jr.
