  1. I totally agree. I think the most interesting part of the article is Fielders contract. I just really cant see a team giving him that much over that many years. Agreed. I'm thinking that the best that Prince will do is a 6 year deal with a player out after 3 years. The big guy has been extremely durable, but his size is going to scare some people. Sexson was very durable as well in his full Brewer seasons. He was nearly as productive at the plate, and much better defensively at first in my opinion. He only got a four year deal in a better economy(granted he was a year or two older and off a fairly major injury).
  2. Don't like any of his projections. What use would the Brewers have throwing $5 million away on Joel Piniero or Francis? As for Mike Gonzalez, he's a gas can, for $3.5 per you could come close to signing both Saito and Hawkins.
  3. But they are 'barely breaking even', right?
  4. If I'm looking for a RH hitting outfielder, I'd go for Andruw Jones. He made roughly what Counsell did last year, and played pretty well. Personally, I think the Brewers need a lefty backup OF. All that said, I wouldn't be opposed to tossing Murton a NRI if he was homesick.
  5. I'm fairly sure that if you took the worst six week stretch out of any hitter's season they'd look decent. Counsell's still look pretty bad to me.
  6. I'm not sure. By spring training, it will have been a year and a half since his surgery. Not sure if he will be able or even willing to pitch by then, but I've seen his name on the free agent lists.
  7. When he threw out the first pitch, Soup said that he wants to play next year as well.
  8. I'm not so sure that Francona is that great. Anyone should be able to have some success managing a team with a huge payroll. Replace Philly and Boston on his resume with Pittsburgh and Kansas City, and he's probably not looking so hot. It sounds like that clubhouse in Boston was in chaos last year. Let the Cubbies have him.
  9. As one who was not in favor of the trade at the time, I really don't care now whether someone was for or against it at the time. People are allowed to change their minds. So if Lawrie becomes the next Ben Grieve, these same flip-floppers can crow about how 'we' hosed Toronto in a few years? I can't stand it because these are the same types of people who call the radio talk shows, etc. They are just like the people who complain to this day how the Brewers should have never traded Sheffield.
  10. It's time to start my obligatory annual thread to discuss the merits (or lack thereof) of bringing Benny back into the fold. Assuming that he wants to play and is ready to give it a go come February, would you throw him a NRI? Obviously, as we stand now the rotation for next year is set 1 through 5- but a lot can happen between now and April.
  11. I'd bet that Lawrie would have ended up as an outfielder in the Brewers organization. He will probably end up there within the next few years in Toronto as well. If he continues to progress as a hitter, that won't matter....however, to me he lost a lot of his value when he decided that he didn't want to catch anymore. Can we please drop this strawman? No one has made this claim. It's irritating to me that there are a lot more people who are vocally against this trade now then there were 8 months ago. Was I in favor of the trade when it was made? Absolutely. Would I do it again? I would have said yes 2 months ago- I'd say no now. All that I'm saying is the path baseball history is littered with guys like Lawrie who started off like gangbusters and went bust. That's the beauty of baseball. Heck, for all we know, Marcum will go out and win the Cy Young next year.
  12. I highly doubt that Greg Maddux would want to cut into his golfing time to coach in the majors.
  13. "Is this Uecker or the other guy? I can't tell." I had the same thing going, but he sounded like Powell to me.
  14. I wouldn't start casting Lawrie's plaque for Cooperstown just yet. Hindsight is 20/20. Not even the biggest Lawrie backer could have seen the season that he had last year coming. I still say that he would have never sniffed the majors last season had the Brewers kept him. I have a feeling that he wouldn't have played nice with Money down in Nashville.
  15. Regardless, he is a top power RF bat in the NL. Some people forget those types don't grow on trees. I'll take it a step further. Some people forget that power doesn't grow on trees. Take Prince's 35-40 homers a year away and then dump Hart's 25 homers a year in the same off-season? To what ends? It's not as simple as plugging a guy in because he has hit for some power in the minors (Brad Nelson, any other AAA+/AAAA player out there). Are you going to fill the lineup with a bunch of guys just because they have had high OBP? I take it these people didn't endure the mid '80's. If you have no power, you had better have great pitching and steal a ton of bases. Ask the 'guru' Billy Beane, his team hasn't been good since they had power and two-three stud pitchers.
  16. Cool. Does Whitefish Bay have a Home Talent League team?
  17. 1. Pujols- Cardinals 2. Fielder - Angels 3. Reyes - Nationals 4. Wilson - Yankees 5. Jackson - Mets 6. Rollins - Phillies 7. Ramirez -Tigers 8. Beltran - Giants 9. Papelbon - Red Sox 10. Ortiz - Orioles
  18. How come Macha isn't getting any interviews?
  19. Both of these guys are about to get expensive, so I can see the Braves motives here. Don't see a fit for the Brewers, however.
  20. Reading Briggs' post, that may have been a positive :-) You have a point, but back in the dark ages of '81, there were maybe 50 televised games a year. No FSN. Back then, the only time that you saw County Stadium on TV was if the Brewers hosted the Game of The Week or they were playing the Sox.
  21. The black hole that was Lorn Brown and Dwayne Mosley for some of the best years in team history is a travesty. Neither of those two belonged anywhere near a major league booth. Lorn was only here for a year, correct? I believe the year they were off WTMJ. The reception was horrible at night, if you weren't within a few miles of a network station. As for Mosley, sometimes you still hear the 'Milwaukee, you have a World Series' call from '82. I'm wondering why Ueck wasn't working the 9th that game. After he left for the Brewers I know that he did the Sports on the Channel 18 news.
  22. Nick Punto as a starter? Pass. He's old and a poor hitter. Yuni nearly had one fewer home run last season than this guy has in his career. I know that some put a huge value on OBP, but his career OBP is nearly higher than his career SLG.... a career SLG of .327? He had better play SS like Ozzie Smith in 1983 to justify that. Punto is the only option that I have seen that is actually worse than Jamey Carroll. I'd rather bring Yuni back, or even find a good glove, no hit SS buried in someone's system and tell them to never swing at the plate unless they have either a 0-1, 0-2, 1-2 or 2-2 count against them.
  23. Jamey Wright is also available as a situational reliever... I cannot believe that he's still pitching.
  24. Definitely an underrated player here- mostly due to his streakiness, in my opinion. He's a lot like Jenkins in that way. In the end, he signed a very team-friendly deal. I don't think that the Brewers should be trading guys like that when they are productive.
  25. The late Rory Marcus took Uecker's spot during a lot of the Mr. Belvedere filming. If I recall correctly, way back in the day, Uecker did some innings of TV games when WTMJ-4 still carried the team. As for Dwayne Mosley, I've always heard that he was canned because he and Uecker did not get along.
