  1. For only one year of Fielder? That seems like an overpay. I hope that kind of deal is out there this offseason, or the type of deal colby proposed. heck, i thought that was more a lowball offer. Odorizzi isn't in AAA yet, and most teams, if they want a prospect, want an ML ready one like LaPorta was. i don't believe Odorizzi is quite as valuable on the open market as we're making him out to be, so i think a trade for a star has to start with him. i doubt an outsider would value Gamel too much, and Braddock is certainly replaceable. i think Fielder's price tag is evened out from him being able to play for six months with a team instead of two if he would be a regular deadline trade. to think if Fielder was a FA at the end of this year, the 2011 draft would sure be a fun one with three first-round picks plus a sandwich pick.
  2. an electric would at least give you the option of a quick 15 second shave before you head out the door just to get rid of the shadow. before a date is the only time i've felt my electric just wasn't good enough. but then i guess an imperfect shave is better than razor cuts.
  3. my folks have a computer upstairs but want Netflix downstairs. trying to find a good way to make it work: 1. very long cable connecting the computer to the downstairs tv. need about 40', so maybe $150??? 2. get a cheap laptop and a wireless router. 3. Nintendo Wii. probably the most expensive option and it doesn't play dvd's (although they have an existing dvd player). some of me wonders if i can talk them into the Wii Fit so they get some exercise.
  4. "A gentleman will walk but never run." --Sting.
  5. it's a difficult question to word, but i think i know what you mean. it's almost like it's 2008, you're the GM and Sabathia is available, and you have the current Brewers farm system. i'd trade Gamel, Odorizzi and Braddock. Gamel can be dealt because we have 3B covered in the short-term. Odorizzi is doing great, but young in the system yet and we can try to find Version II with one of the two comp picks we get. Braddock might not add much value to another team being neither a starter or closer yet, but having Axford makes him expendable. i have to disagree that Braddock is anywhere near enough to get someone the likes of Fielder. i'd much rather keep Fielder next year and take the picks if all we could get back was Braddock (no offense to Braddock or anything). Option II if that first offer got turned down, would be Odorizzi, Rivas and Braddock.
  6. i haven't had any virus problems from the site that i use, but then it's an internet site like any other. but don't expect any streaming site to have your game playing perfectly the whole way through. there are several weeks where i can't find a Packers stream at all, or boxing that i end up watching in German, or patchy video playback. tv networks are also active in canceling illegal streaming, so you'll often end up searching for new links and miss a quarter of the football game or so.
  7. my beard comes in so fast and thick that i really can't use straight razors. maybe if you're thinking of switching, you could use an electric as general-purpose and go to the straight razor for the occasional time you really want to be clean-cut. i can't get an electric shave super-close, but it does the trick for work and whatnot. en electric is certainly not that precise around the sideburns, but i just use a trimmer now and again for that.
  8. the last time i bought Civilization IV i had to give it away to a coworker because i'd been staying up to 3 am every night. i may be out of work now, but why why why did i buy it again??
  9. aren't we undervaluing what Fielder would get in a return considering he will very likely net two first-round draft picks to whichever team picks him up?
  10. i don't think it'd be that hard for me to root for a minor-league team for another affiliate. easy enough to root for a player to make the majors, whether it's with the Brewers or not. MLB is too expensive for me to want to make the effort to become a fan of another team.
  11. i'm a big Hulu fan and was disappointed to hear that they're going to be charging for it now. and i've used it long enough that i don't even notice that it's on a week delay. to me, cable tv seems like the biggest rip off. if i could select the channels i pay for, then sure, but otherwise i'm not going to fork out $100 a month for a bunch of Judith Light tv dramas and Everybody Loves Raymond reruns. since i usually live out of state, streaming has been about the only way i can watch Packer or Badger games.
  12. thanks, Craig. the job is rec programming, which i don't particularly want to do, but i can't be too picky. lucky enough to be getting called in the first place. my current job has me down to 30 hours a week, so i'm thinking instead of look for a second job in Madison, i may as well head to Austin in a week or so and start looking for 40-60 hours of work--this is maybe a good time with the college kids going back to school and temp jobs hiring for Christmas. it's too bad Asheville is a terrible place to find work, but you and so many people on here have said how great Austin and Texas in general is, so that's been great to hear.
  13. plus TH might very well have not written the headline for the piece. hard to argue that the headline as it is, is a lot more catchy than "Gamel just happy to be playing." and in the media, the dividing line between catchy and misleading is a thin one. it was from an earlier post, but i don't think the JS has an obligation to be objective at all. maybe in a game summary, sure, but certainly not in a column. those would be boring columns to read. i think there's also a lot of reader bias that comes through. generally, everyone on bf.net really likes Gamel, so when TH says something negative, that gets a "TH stinks!" reaction. but if Haudricourt was ripping on Gomez, that probably wouldn't get a reaction. in the end, we're all sure animated about what TH writes, and his articles are drawing a lot of reaction, whether that's positive or negative. and isn't that the whole point of his job?
  14. i'd bet that Manny had it planned to get thrown out in the first place, just as a last middle finger to the Dodgers and the organization. manny just isn't going to be happy no matter where he ends up. it'll be really interesting what happens to him this offseason. i get the feeling that he's going to end up just like Dye. all he'll get is $5M DH offers (I presume), but he'll consider the money to be insulting and will end up not signing with anyone. maybe it was on MLBTR, but i read that the White Sox still are only given about a 10% chance of making the playoffs from where they stand now. i assume Manny will be a big boost, but that's still a tough hill to climb. this move should have happened two weeks ago.
  15. got my first job application callback today, so that lifts my hopes a little. this was the one and only time i'd said i lived in Austin on my application, so i told them i was now in Wisconsin visiting family (which i kinda am), so we're doing it by phone. not gonna rush down there for a half-hour interview against maybe 30 candidates, but i guess if i become one of the final couple of people, then i'll head down there (i have a place there to live) to interview in person. i'd planned on heading to Austin soon, anyway, because i don't want to live in Wisconsin anymore and Texas has the most job openings across the country. i have a place to live down there, but it's just a little sooner than i'd planned on going since $1500 isn't much to have in the bank even if i do have free housing. i'll need 40-60 hours of work to get by once i'm down there, but i suppose with school starting and temp jobs starting to hire for the Christmas season, maybe it's a good time to take the risk and head down there.
  16. FtJ, you just made me spit coffee on myself:) i'd just assumed Al was kidding about not knowing, the way i was about being known as Jimmy's brother. i wouldn't call him the best guitarist of all time, but SRV would definitely be in my top 3. even SRV himself said he wasn't better than Hendrix. if you ever get a chance to see his performance on Austin City Limits, you'll be a fan. and he's got a real interesting life story about falling into cocaine addiction and his recovery soon before he died.
  17. better known for being the brother of Jimmie Vaughan.
  18. I've always wondered what people in Milwaukee did when the team moved to Atlanta. I'm sure I'd switch my allegiance from "team" to individual players and keep following them, cheering for them the way a fantasy sports owner cheers for particular players. but the past few years i've been getting soured on the way major league baseball operates as a business, and i'm sure that soon enough i wouldn't watch MLB at all. but the sport itself i love too much to just walk away from. i'm positive that i'd become a die-hard fan of whatever minor-league team was around me, no matter who they are affiliated with. actually, i'm surprised i haven't done that yet.
  19. though hoffman can block most trades, he may not necessarily have a clause in his contract that can also block waiver claims to those same teams. if hoffman doesn't ok a trade to the WS, then there exists the possibility that he can't block a straight claim and the Brewers let him go just to save the money on the rest of his contract.
  20. i don't see it as an ethical problem for newspapers to report this at all. plus that would really limit reporting if they can only publish information that's already available to the public. i'm really happy about all this, but then i'm in favour of a shared system to begin with. i'm hoping the additional information will help to cause more of a stir with fans to put something in place. i always agreed with Steinbrenner when he complained that he was paying out revenue sharing checks to all the smaller clubs like the Pirates when it seemed clear that those teams were just pocketing the money. with more transparent revenue and spending, i think any new system that's in place would actually be better for the players. but is a system with both a cap and a floor even less realistic? we already had the top-half teams complaining about a cap and not being allowed to spend to their limit (taking away their big advantage), but then we'd just be telling the other half of teams that they'd have to spend more and therefore dig into their profit margins. and any chance of compromise on it all is just made less likely by baseball not having any representative who is independent of both ownership and the players union.
  21. JoeHova, good call on Black Sheep Boy. that album ended up making a great gift. not sure why, but some of my favourite albums are from genres that i don't even listen to that often, but they have that constant-replay value that few albums really have, or at least they have a tone that fits any mood, which is why Tool wouldn't make a list of mine, despite their awesomeness. Usual Suspects: Miles Davis, Kind of Blue (said in earlier post) Clapton Unplugged Hendrix Experience More Recent Favourites: Eddie Vedder--Into the Wild Soundtrack Mumford&Sons--Sigh No More Avett Brothers--I and Love and You Alexi Murdoch--Time Without Consequence Ingrid Michaelson--Girls and Boys Guilty Pleasure: John Mayer, Room For Squares
  22. well, here goes why, for the most part: 1. I'm 33 years old. I don't like the thought of being 35-37 when i finally can move to a place i enjoy. i'd be ok with it if i were 23. 2. I hate Wisconsin-type winters. a lot. 3. not ashamed to say i'd like to meet a girl and settle down. i don't see how moving to northern North Dakota (for example) helps my chances of this. this may very well be the #1 reason i hesitate to move to the middle of nowhere for a job. considering i'm 33, my window of meeting a never-been-married girl decreases quite a bit every year. 4. low-paying recreation jobs in a city i might enjoy offer at least some resume building. 5. i'm no social butterfly, but i anticipate a good degree of loneliness at a middle-of-nowhere job, and i don't handle that well at all. work in metro areas offer more an opportunity to make friends. this isn't me trying to be defensive at all, just why i've been so hesitant to apply for jobs in the north or so far away from metropolitan areas. if i am off base with these reasons i'd become more open to the idea.
  23. thanks for the kind words, Hawing. just that sentence helped me more than you know. kudos for doing that, Splitter.
  24. If the experience was truly good, then yes. I would and have. Consider it like internal exile. i thought maybe i was being crazy for declining to apply to these jobs, but i thought again what it would be like living in the middle of nowhere for three years, and i think i'm just not going to do it.
  25. would you take a job in the middle of nowhere for two years if it meant getting "good experience?" (and no, you won't get rich.)
