  1. The Office hasn't gone the way of the Simpsons already, has it--a show that gets awesome ratings yet nobody really likes it anymore? count me in with the disappointment over the clip show. plus clips are kinda pointless when the series hasn't been on the air that long, and so the "remember when's" are from only a season ago. I'll predict the total quality-related death of this show to be when they finally give Creed a dedicated episode. and you just know they're gonna. eventually. it's been interesting the way Michael Scott and Amy Pohler's characters have been exact opposites in terms of their development. i couldn't stand Poehler's character in Season 1. they started her off as being an incompetent idiot for not other reason than bad jokes, but now they've turned her into the good and dedicated employee who just gets crap dumped on her. Michael i used to root for as the guy who just couldn't ever figure out how to fit in. but now that we've learned there's a method to his madness, that just makes him mostly a jerk.
  2. i'm sure it won't happen, but it would be absolutely hilarious if, for whatever reason, Leno gets terrible ratings once he gets back to the Tonight Show. i understand that Fox gets fine ratings for its Seinfeld reruns in the same timeslot, but that network has always felt like a baby brother against CBS, NBC and ABC, and having a strong late-night show would help to give it some legitimacy. i definitely don't see Conan beating Leno or Letterman in overall ratings, but he'd definitely win that 18-49 y/o demographic, which is just as important, if not more.
  3. pretty sweet that each staff member is going to get a $600,000 severance package, plus Conan kicking in some of his own money, too. that's some class. Wherever Conan goes, I sure hope Andy Richter goes along with.
  4. if "upside" is what you'd be paying Garland for, I'd much rather see Bush, because I think he has a lot more of it, and for way cheaper, too.
  5. Sheets would be a great pickup for a GM on the hot seat if he could be gotten on a one-year contract.
  6. if there was one player i thought Soup could have been traded for, it was Juan Pierre, but now Soup is more valuable as a 6th starter than a 5th outfielder. Scott Rolen is in an identical contract situation and would be a nice backup IF, but we'd have to send a prospect along with, and I'd rather just have the prospect.
  7. in many respects, i don't see how Leno is the villain in this. he was pushed out of the Tonight Show by NBC. when he decided he wanted to keep working (no surprise), NBC gave him a different show. so now, when he's offered an 11:30 timeslot, is he supposed to turn that down out of respect for Conan? "No, I'll just be unemployed." ??? the only thing that's bugging me about Leno right now is that he's participating in all the jokes about NBC and the whole situation. Conan gets the shaft and Leno comes out the big winner, so it's a little classless to be making jokes about it.
  8. a fan of indie/pop folk music and happily discovered Mumford & Sons recently. also picked up an album by a band named Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin. only got it because i thought their name alone deserved the purchase, but they turned out to be pretty good.
  9. it sounds like NBC still has some leverage at the bargaining table with Conan, that they could still potentially hold him to his 2.5 year contract, plus another year. he'd be pretty well forgotten if he had to stay off TV for that long. maybe this is all a blessing in disguise for Conan. he'd really softened up his comedy to appeal to the older Tonight Show viewers, but he won't have to on any other network. this way, maybe he won't suffer the same fate Leno did--that is, a good comedian who sells out and dumbs down his act in order to get the largest audience possible.
  10. no way the Tonight Show dies. it's like SNL. maybe it'll get mediocre ratings for a while, but it'll always be there. and you'd only ever be replacing it with something similar. maybe Conan is turning down $28 million by leaving, but no doubt he has a clause in his contract that pays him a ton if he gets pushed out like this. i've heard ABC isn't interested in Conan, but if he could possibly get CBS and Fox fighting to get him, he'll make plenty of money.
  11. there's a lot i've always liked about Yost. he's got a lot of talent being the "rah rah" type of manager that moribund teams like the Royals need. he's just not a technical manager that division-winning teams need.
  12. i read that nothing is permanent yet, but they're contacting Conan and Leno to see what they both think of moving Leno to 10:30. I guess ABC has said they don't really want Conan, but Fox would certainly like the way he pulls in the younger viewers. NBC didn't exactly pull him from his late-night slot; he would have left the network if they didn't give him that earlier spot. I could see Fox putting him on at 11 like they did for Chevy's show, specifically so he's on a half-hour before the competition. maybe if Conan doesn't work on Fox, too, he could just do a talk show from his basement like Tom Green.
  13. it's like they've got two star players on the team, but both at the same position. in a lot of ways i could see how moving Leno back for a half hour would work. The Tonight Show had its audience primarily to see Leno's monologue, and it seems like that move they're proposing would do just that--Leno gets the monologue and Conan does the rest of the show. I think that could spell the end of Conan, though. His show a half-hour later wouldn't get a real chance to build an audience, plus you're starting to play around with a show that's a brand. That's like moving SNL to Sundays. although NBC shouldn't forget that when Leno first came on, he wasn't doing great for a while until he had that Hugh Grant show. Conan has barely had the chance to get his feet wet. Seems to me part of what's hurt Conan is that NBC has pulled the reigns on him a little and not quite let him be the goofy, slightly-too-much comedian he's good at being. They want him to be a Leno clone and he's not. Conan would be hilarious on Fox. They'd give him a good time slot and encourage him to do idiot stuff.
  14. i'm on that site all the time for Badger and Packer games and PPV boxing. it's really a crapshoot as far as video quality, sometimes good, sometimes bad. i also visit justin.tv. Badger games and PPV stuff is easy enough to find, but I have yet to be able to watch a Packer game in its entirety. Most channels get blocked halfway through. still, my only other option to see a Packer game is drive an hour to sit at a Buffalo Wild Wings. I haven't had cable tv since college. i'll probably never have it until you can pay per channel. $50 a month for Fine Living and Lifetime and other channels I'll never watch seems ridiculous.
  15. and that HOF bar keeps getting lower and lower. I'm rooting for Mike Greenwell and Ellis Burks next year. they each had a span of games in their careers where they were truly above average. Glen Braggs went 3-4 once with a HR, so he should get in, too. Blyleven will get in next year on the basis of writers feeling sorry for him that he just missed it the year before.
  16. i get very creeped out by the "this could happen to you" type of horror flicks, so i may avoid Paranormal Activity, even though the movie really intrigues me. ghosts are scary! I'm a fan of Ferrell's act, but I agree it's getting old. he's hit that popularity point where the movie itself revolves around his act and it's no longer his routine adding to the movie. to that, though, Winter Passing with him and Zooey Deschanel is excellent. if you like quirky detective movies, I'll throw out my recommendation for Zero Effect. yet to find it in a video store, though. despite the presence of Ben Stiller, it's a light and charming movie.
  17. man, i love reading Obsessed's weather posts. if TV weathermen would talk in the similar "my audience isn't stupid and I have something to teach them" vein, i'd actually watch the local news. it's about 18 degrees with the wind chill in Greensboro, NC, right now and I'm actually slightly chilly. maybe i'm actually starting to assimilate to this southern weather. granted, i'll still probably melt when we get back to three straight months of 90+ temperatures.
  18. you may already know these: Tim Cahill--Jaguars Ripped My Flesh (his best) Pete McCarthy--McCarthy's Bar (a travel across Ireland, also vowing to stop at every namesake bar along the way) Maarten Troost--The Sex Lives of Cannibals
  19. the DH is only contributing half as much. it's a position players are relegated to once they wash up defensively, so i personally have a lower regard for it. I'm not averse in any way to a DH in the HOF because it's part of the game like it or not. but because of the half-play, i think a HOF DH should have truly dominant offensive statistics to make it, and I don't think Martinez' are enough. maybe the analogy doesn't work, but obviously a DH would make the HOF on offensive stats alone. wouldn't it then be justification for someone like Omar Vizquel to make the HOF because of his truly dominant defensive skills despite his Uecker-esque bat?
  20. it seems to me that Mattingly gets some votes just for being the best player on the Yankees team for most of his years, in by far the biggest media market in the country. that certainly adds some shine to his name and in the memory of the numerous New England media voters. i think it's the same thing as presuming Yount would have done a lot better than 77% if he'd have played almost anywhere other than Milwaukee.
  21. "Jack Morris was on 4 winning teams and won a WS MVP" i have a feeling he makes it in on the basis of having the 2nd or 3rd best performance by a pitcher in a World Series, in a Game 7 nonetheless. Roberto Alomar would get my vote on the basis of his 10 gold gloves. I'd probably also be one of those people who'd vote for McGwire, asterisk-free. though maybe odd I wouldn't have voted for Jim Rice, because while Rice was the best for about seven years, McGwire was so far ahead of everyone else in his time and made such a tremendous impact. he should get some credit for the "memorable" factor.
  22. all other NBA GMs should take note--you should never draft a Crypt when the team is already Blood-controlled or else you won't have good team chemistry. the Glock Company is really missing out on a lot of sponsorship opportunities here.
  23. i like Paradise Lost more for the story itself than for the writing style in particular. it shows itself a lot in the various rewrites of Faust, too, how the perception of the devil changes according to the particular religious leanings of that age. i think i'm going to write a book on my upcoming kayak trip in the summer. an acquaintance of mine wrote a book on a hike we did, and all i kept thinking when i read it was "Dang, i could have written that!" i think i've been too intimidated from reading great authors, knowing i don't have close to their skill, when really i just need to write, even if I'm no Hemingway.
  24. why do we have to presume a dropoff from Fielder and Braun? if anything, i think their numbers were a little below their ability in 09. makes sense that McGehee would drop off some, but i think Weeks could very well continue what he started in 09, even better if he can give us more than two months of work. and our RF production could be better if either Hart improves or is replaced by Gerut.
  25. i hope i'm not pulling your quote out of context, but i can't agree. we had one of the best offenses in the NL last year and i don't see how it drops off so far based on losing Hardy and Cameron. Cameron could swat, but his OBP was kinda low, and Hardy was a nonfactor. Neither player was any real catalyst to the offense that i don't see their departure as significant enough to drop us to middle of the road.
