  1. I'm sure Melvin's phone will be ringing off the hook with GM's lining up to trade quality starters for those three. Remember, we couldn't trade Claudio Vargas (i.e. Dave Bush #2) for a "never-make-it" minor leaguer. completely agree with your first point--quantity does not equal quality. although even if you'd put Vargas and Bush on equal ground talent-wise (i wouldn't), Vargas wouldn't fetch anything because of what he was owed, and Bush has some years left for essentially nothing. i lean more to trading FOR prospects. For a WC run, are we really going to lean completely on Sheets staying healthy all year, which is what we'd be doing. Plus there are still a lot of teams that could catch up to us in the WC run, so it's not just a couple teams that we'd be gunning for. even though we have a lot of AA talent, i still don't think we suddenly have a lot of guys to trade away. LaPorta and Gamel both have spots they could fill on this team, plus Gamel gives us the flexibility to trade Fielder if that's the way Melvin decides to go. and yeah, trading our stars creates a lot of holes in the lineup, but i'm for picking up talent on the level that could step in and start right away in 09. how are we suddenly stacked from the draft? we got one hitter and the rest pitchers. plus that's sure a lot to ask Lawrie to suddenly take up the elite prospect status of Gamel.

  3. Year 2000: "congratulations, new Mr. President. Welcome to the White House. Our first order of business, here's what really happened at Area 51, this is who shot JFK, here's the recipe to Secret Stadium Sauce, and of course, here are your socks with the Presidential Seal."
  4. similar to what And That said, i think a trade of Fielder is likely, but when will depend on his stats. if they're a little low at the deadline, i'd bet they'd keep him through the season, hope his stats climb again, then trade him in the offseason. there's a lot of teams that are going to need a first baseman for next year.
  5. same here, dude. don't know, but apparently it's odd looking. but for me, since almost nobody else does it, it's apparently become my thing, to the point that people will comment if I'm not wearing them. I walked by a group of friends through a crowd last week, and I guess they said to each other "it looks like him, but that guy's not wearing socks and sandals, so it can't be him."
  6. The free Bellagio fountain show at night is nice, you and your wife would like that. the Freemont Experience in old downtown (north of the Strip) is a pretty nice place to walk, especially at night, when there's a light show on the roof. they run a dinky little parade there i think once a day, too. Freemont can be a nice place during the heat of the day because the casinos are open to the street, so you can slip into the lobbys for a nice blast of air conditioning. and when you take a taxi, the freeway is often the more expensive way to get to your destination. (i only go to Vegas to gamble, but otherwise i sure don't see the appeal of the place as a vacation/sightseeing trip)
  7. even as a Croc supporter, there's definitely some validity to not wearing them to certain places. they do give off an aire of "I don't care," and there are definitely places where you should. to wear Crocs in a nicer place, i put on the same level as a dude keeping his baseball cap on in a restaurant (that's always really bugged me). but yeah, the $50 price tag is ridiculous. i wear the same Merrell sandals I got for $7. and for my money, Keene's are better than Crocs. as far as hiking in them, I do like to hike in sandals/Crocs, but the pebbles and sticks that get in there is annoying. but they're fine on long-distance hikes because your feet get so calloused up that you barely even feel a pebble.
  8. i got my letter yesterday to say they were sending it. i don't want a letter--just send the check!
  9. my cousin bought some for the hospital, but it did take us some searching to find the ones without holes on the top, as he needed those for any blood splatter. i'm also going to have to stand up for the hiker community and say that crocs are awesome. they are almost universally worn by long-distance hikers because they let the feet swell after a long hike, and it's a huge plus that they're also about the lightest camp shoes you can buy. Hiking was where I was introduced to them, so this is the first i've ever heard that they were thought of as female footwear. of course, I'm a socks-and-sandals wearer, so i suppose i have no giant regard as to what might be kosher in social situations.
  10. Gamel is a nice thought on offense, a lefthanded bat whose numbers project really well to the major-league level, but it'd still be Braun-esque to see him play 3B defense. and since he's made some big defensive strides lately, he'd sure be hurt developmentally by coming up here to basically pinch-hit. LaPorta would be interesting, though i have no idea how that might effect his arbitration status in the future. But Branyan is hitting just fine in the lineup, and overall i think our offense is doing well. i don't think we're really desperate for some shot in the arm from calling up someone else.
  11. i did that once at a snake enclosure and got the snake to strike. then the zookeeper yelled at me.
  12. (Brian, i'm a little scared of you right now) When I go to see a movie, any advertisement but a movie premier bugs me. i can see a car commercial at home, and often the previews are the best part about the night. also, 10 minutes of credits at the start of a movie bugs me, too.
  13. i also think that with time one starts to forget the negatives about a person and player and selectively remembers the good. so it is that Mays and Mantle and the like are heroes while current guys aren't on par. DiMaggio had quite a few mob connections, for example. i do wonder if media plays a part in it. you're not going to get many articles of "Jeter visits hospital," but if he even missed a wastebasket and didn't pick it up, everyone would find out (Gary, the no-trash Cougar).
  14. Clemens and Bonds on the HOF voting ballot at the same time? that'll be interesting.
  15. yeah, on the surface it looks like an insult, but to get him throwing strikes it makes sense. but then it'd be hilarious if he got lit up in his first single-A game.
  16. i still think the risk was worth the gamble. and there's going to be guys every single season who just aren't worth the money. it doesn't have to be just Cameron and Gagne that are singled out on this team, either.
  17. ugh. come to north carolina. seriously, 1.5 car lengths is the minimum around here. what's worse, is if you're trying to turn right and get to their side, they still won't move forward. it's not that they're necessarily bad drivers around here, it's just that they're all extremely scared, extremely passive drivers. after moving from WI, i'm discovering it's a myth that Southerners are more friendly than other groups of people. they really aren't--less so, if anything.
  18. i didn't get to see the race, but i'd thought the reason Big Brown finished last was the horse was/became injured. i also don't buy it that the horse was suddenly taken off steroids, as those animals are tested for those pretty stringently. but the fact that so much money was lost by picking BB to win the race doesn't bother me in the slightest. that's the nature of gambling, plus it doesn't make a lot of sense to pick such a huge favourite in the first place. some greater attention with a TC win would have been nice for the sport. it's amazing that two of the three biggest sports in America just 50 years ago, boxing and horse racing, are slowly fading away.
  19. why would you be happy about that? we haven't had a Triple Crown winner in so long, it would be a needed boost to a great sport.
  20. sober now, but you know, just wanted to get this on page 1 to avoid the hassle later tonight. actually, probably won't be drinking much tonight, since i'm meeting someone at 1:00 tomorrow i'd like to impress, and a hangover wouldn't fly, especially since it's supposed to hit 99 in north carolina tomorrow. ugh.
  21. awesome. congrats.
  22. Into the Wild was Sean Penn, not the Coen Brothers. but a great film. stays pretty close to the book, which i guess it had to, because the parents were pretty hesitant about allowing a movie to be made. i really enjoy that both the book and the movie leave people saying that he was either crazy for doing something like that or dreaming to do the same thing, but there's noting really left open to the in-between. Anybody have any particular knowledge of the "A Walk in the Woods" movie? it's talked about a ton in the Appalachian Trail circiles that i go on for obvious reasons. last i heard it was prett well dead, with Redford hesitating on it and just starting to get too old to do it. although even if he doesn't do it, someone will eventually. the talk among hikers, though, is how horribly that is probably going to impact the Trail itself with all the people suddenly trying to hike it.
  23. what? page 2 on a saturday night? i'm disappointed in you all. man i had a great time tonight, made three friends. tipsy, but not crasy. the girl was surprised that it took a lot for me to get tipsy, but at 210 lbs with Wisconsin blood, it takes a bit. well, at least this isn't a drunken email to a girl. i do that too much as it is.
  24. Branyan probably wouldn't be a very good poster on here. i heard the only letters he bothered learning as a child were H, R, B and K, since those are the only letters he'd ever need to use.
  25. so for those keyboard-guitar things, what does your left hand control?
