  1. my car is in the shop today, so i'm walking four miles to get to the nearest bar to see the game. leaving now, actually. man i hope there's no rainout.
  2. i'm just going to go ahead and take my "I'm a moron" bow right now. it's been a long week....
  3. the one line from Field of Dreams that almost ruins it for me is "...I only saw him years later, when he was broken down by life." it's just so fake a line. Dumbo's mother didn't bother me at all. and sorry, but that last scene in Titanic all i could think was "uh, finally this movie is done!" I'm totally spacing on the name, that Kevin Costner one he did after FoD when he was at that Civil War outpost, and as he was taken away, the soldiers shot and killed the wolf he had befriended. that scene was a good one. (can't believe i almost forgot this one) but the final scene to Das Boot was pretty hard to handle, one of my saddest ever.
  4. last time i talked to the brother, we had a :45 minute conversation about cereal. every time the mother went shopping, she'd get two good brands, we'd of course eat them first, then be stuck with two weeks worth of Rice Krispies and Cheerios. Raisin Nut Bran has to be the best cereal ever Cracklin Oat Bran slips to #2 based on cost Cookie Crisp is probably the best tasting cereal nobody really buys Crispix tops my underrated list eat the whole box in a sitting: Cinnamon Toast Crunch shredded wheat squares are ok enough, but the huge biscuit variety with a lot of sugar is awesome. was anyone else forced to eat graham cracker mush, just graham crackers, milk and sugar? absolutely disgusting.
  5. i'd take the Cubs, too, just for a single year. i'd take a 90% version of Sheets (i.e. Zambrano) with the far stronger assurances of going the full year than the risk of Sheets. but just as we have more long-term raw talent at the back end of the rotations, that also carries with it more risk of regression or at least not meeting expectations. having three guys who haven't logged a full year of ML service-time as a starter carries some risk with it. it's a real strength of that cubs team that they have a really steady, reliable starting rotation. Dumpster might be the shakiest of the bunch moving from reliever, but he's had his experience, too.
  6. i'm almost embarrassed, i teared up at Dan in Real Life, but it may not have entirely been just the move. Field of Dreams, of course. not just catching with the dad, just the whole thing. My First Mister--one of those movies where you want to rush and call your father. Snow Walker Paths of Glory--the ending with the German woman singing, it was incredible. it's odd, i'll watch Old Yeller get shot, and nothing. When Luke pulls off Vader's helmet (just kidding). i'm not ashamed to say i'll well up at some movies. i had a professor who always said "A real man will cry at a good poem but still kick your a-- for laughing at him for it."
  7. i remember this was a good discussion on here when we first signed Suppan. but even if you call Suppan and Bush equal pitching-wise, Suppan adds so much value in other areas like leadership and actual playoff experience. if we're playing the Cubs to end the season with the division on the line, i'm still confident Suppan could step up and pitch a great game.
  8. i don't totally remember the way it works in Wisconsin anymore, but is it an option to get an emergency teaching license? that way maybe you could teach on a probationary basis and take classes at the same time. might give you an idea of what teaching is like, but yet you wouldn't quite be going for broke by making it a little easier financially to back out. and if not in Wisconsin, to just leave the state for a year or so and get an emergency teaching license in another state. i'd thought California was hurting for teachers.
  9. i think to some degree people have reacted like "geez, it's annoying, but not worth the reaction" because we see it as a happens-rarely type of event. of course what doesn't get reported are the hundreds of times someone does this and Tiger politely asks them to stop. he's not as much yelling at the one dude who did it that once, but from the hundreds of times it's happened to him. it's like playing basketball against the dude who likes to elboy you in the stomach when the ref's not looking. not legal, but not much you can do, but at some point everybody's going to shove the dude to the floor. then it just gets reported "voilent foul over a simple elbow to the chest" but it's a lot more than that.
  10. all i could add is definitely talk to as many teachers as you can about the work and even sit in on some classes if you can beforehand. i'm kind of one of those failed teachers. I went for English 6-12. i got straight As in my core courses, yet wasn't prepared in any way for student teaching. it was up at 6 to finish up the day's work, skip breakfast, skip lunch, home at 6:30, dinner, then work until 2 am. still, it seemed like i never got caught up with the work i had to do. took Friday night off, but worked all of Saturday and Sunday. it was just too much. the stress led me to hate the work, do poorly, and my consequently my supervising teachers weren't that sad to see me leave, either. i got caught up in the ideology of my professors and thought it would be different. plus i hate to think of taking out a student loan and then trying to pay it off with a job that pays $28K a year. call me negative, i know. ever thought about editorial work? that's what i do now. that might also fit the sort of thing you're looking for. it can be fun work, but then i also wouldn't completely fill you with sunshine for that industry, either.
  11. wow, this is the most support Vargas has ever recieved here. i don't see what the big deal really is. depth is nice, but it also leaves a lot of players really upset. and to save a couple million dollars i'd take the risk on ZJ starting over Vargas, too. plus maybe every so often ZJ will make it past the 6th inning and not wreck the bullpen.
  12. yawn. it's like every single sports outlet has decided it is better to make mildly-outlandish predictions because that's what garners reader/viewership. To go for somewhat generic predictions but be accurate, apparently we viewers don't want to hear that. it seems best to take sports commentary as what it has become--entertainment--and not researched, expert discussions.
  13. PM me and i can send you some tourist information. can't make any recommendations, but it'd be a list of spots for you to pick from.
  14. my car was made in Korea, so i just answered Japan.
  15. avoid staring directly at the exposed undies of the girl sitting right next to you in the bar. i learned that one last night. one dude next to me asked me if he seemed sober enough to drive home. he seemed ok, but i have him this good advice: "if you have to ask, you're probably not ok." Happily, he stayed another 45 minutes drinking water and eating food.
  16. Hench's article is exactly what sports is NOT. a column dedicated to trashing people, that's really something to be proud of.
  17. i'm pretty much assuming Palmisano doesn't see ML action, but i hadn't figured Solome was all that far behind yet. but as it is, that's a pretty scary comment. maybe Melvin said it in part just to be complimentary.
  18. chicks be crazy.
  19. a totally awesome band at the bar tonight, got a phone number, feel great, got home safe, just an awesome night. my friend decided to sit home tonight and read, so i went out alone. didn't care, had a great time. he was the one who missed out.
  20. i definitely miss Wisconsin. you really realize it's a different culture there when you move away from it, and a it's good one. no pretenses from Wisconsin folks. buy a dude a beer and he's your best friend forever. it's just the length of the winter that i hated so much. just so many different things go into that answer. i live in Winston-Salem, NC right now. if you're 70, it's the perfect place to live. land is uber-cheap and it's a good place to raise a family. but as a single 30-year-old, it's pretty horrible. however, the weather is absolutely perfect. three straight months of 90+ degrees is pretty rough, but then the winter is basically nothing. 20 degrees here is bitter cold. what i've seen in my 2 years in the South is it's a very closed-knit culture. people grow up together and form their groups, and it takes a decade to fully accept someone new into the group. on the surface, it's an extremely friendly bunch, but unfortunately, that's as far as it goes. what i've also noticed is Wisconsin folks go out a lot, do things on the weekends. here everyone seems to be a homebody, and sitting at home on a Friday night is pretty typical. it's just not an outgoing society, which is another reason i again miss Wisconsin culture.
  21. even if the thought is that he wasn't being malicious but just being a sloppy reporter, i think that's still a problem. Fox Sports is gigantic and has the infinite resources to hire capable, skilled writers, any of whom would be thrilled to work for someone as big as Fox. yet here they are, not making any effort at all or targeting the lowest common denominator by publishing the drivel of goons like this guy. i used to write for a smallish trade magazine. there, if i wrote that, i'd have been lucky to keep my job if i gave that to my editor, let alone have it published. apparently at Fox, they give you your own column.
  22. if you're going #2 in the woods, it is most effective to face downhill. it's just the way your body works or something.
  23. you know that guy you sorta knew in high school, who was half-funny/half-jerk, and the only jokes he ever made came from insulting other people? kinda sounds like this dude. even without the Baldelli entry, it was just nine other paragraphs insulting people. he tells us Daly's an alcoholic and doesn't add anything to the comment, or that Baldelli gets injured but doesn't add anything to it.
  24. it is easier to catch a baseball with a glove than with your face.
  25. as a brewer fan living outside of Wisconsin, i couldn't live without XM's baseball coverage. one of the nicer things about XM is that unlike ESPN, they don't have to throw hosts on there who are just big personalities with little real knowledge. they don't entirely have to aim for ratings because you're already a subscriber. i'm a big fan of 175.
