  1. my first thought was that he'd be a good fill-in or platoon guy if/when Fielder is traded in the off-season. a R/L platoon at 1B with Gamel next year?
  2. it's a good day. this sounds fun. 3. leading the WC race. the Cubs still using their bullpen too much, setting the stage for a catch-up. I'm as excited for the second half of the season as I was for Opening Day. any additional fear we can put into Cubs fans is a good feeling, too. Selling 80 long boxes of comics. some lo$$, but glad to have those out of my apartment, definitely. also not the extreme loss I could have incurred. just accepted into Grad school for the Fall.
  4. Bozo was the only clown i was never afraid of, and that says a lot. although i actually had always thought Bozo died about a decade ago.
  5. a bar wouldn't run a card for approval before starting a tab because that would take a ton of time to do. the extra number of drinks that could be made in that amount of time would far outweigh the time it would take to run cards and prevent one or two cards not working. if a bar actually charged me $10-$20 if i left my card there at night, it wouldn't be a bar I'd return to. My bar puts a buck or two (or 10%, but it's less than I'd normally leave as a tip) if I leave it. when the tab starts getting to around $50, my bar runs the bill on people even if they're still going to be sticking around and still drinking, just to prevent anyone from running off or the card not working or just to prevent the major surprise of a super-high bill.
  6. I always thought "Final Countdown" was the penultimate stupid song. At the first instance I heard Avril Levigne classified as "punk" I pretty much stopped listening to modern music.
  7. Greatest Game: Super Dodgeball on the Nintendo. i've only played it once, but it was the most awesome thing ever. Second: MVP Baseball on the Sega Master System. not lifelike one bit, but totally addicting. i loved me some MK on the Genesis. The Mother had no idea there were death moves since I'd do the Friendships when she walked by. Nice touch, Sega.
  8. that would have to be one of the best things about being a major-league player, especially a good one. just the smallest nice thing you do, like wave to a kid, and it's remembered forever, and that everyone who meets you is genuinely excited. although fans can be jerks sometimes, too. i was coming out of a movie with the brother once, and as we walked out, we suddenly realized that the entire Badger football team surrounded, coming out of the movie, too. This was not long after the Brent Moss stuff came out, so a handful of people felt like they had to yell something stupid.
  9. i feel the same way. Oakland gives this kid $4+ million, but for the rate of panning out, would you say they're about equal to a high first-rounder? if so, then you're talking about investing $20 million in the hopes that just one of these guys ends up as something. that doesn't seem like a wise investment. although for Pasqual, i think half the reason the Brewers wanted to sign him is they hadn't done anything in Latin America yet, and just to beat out other teams to him was a big statement that we could compete in that avenue, too.
  10. i think the same thing as And That about trading Jeffress. he's roughly it as far as our top-end pitching prospects go, and with the cost of FA pitching and the fickle nature of pitchers in general, i think that makes him even more valuable. but then we'd still have to give up something, and it's hard to figure a package featuring someone on the level of Charlie Fermaint would really cut it. and we can't forget half the benefit of trading for a starter mid-season is it gives us that much more time to talk the player into signing for 09.
  11. didn't the Brewers do this a couple years ago with a 17-year-old pitcher? and isn't he pretty much a non-prospect now?
  12. come on, that movie was hilarious. i don't know if my favourite part was the CG muscles they gave Nicolas Cage or that the high-school sweethearts have to be about 15 years apart in real life. come to think of it, my favourite part was that the old guy's destiny was to help out the new Ghost Rider when he finally came along. so the big moment arrives, the guy takes him out there and then just turns around and leaves. ah, his big big moment was a sort-of chauffeur and not a part of the action whatsoever. awesome. that movie was right up there with Hudson Hawk for unintentional comedic value.
  13. i don't know why i read it or remember it since i'm not a parent, but i've heard a good way to ween the kid off of one is similar to what was said on the first page, to snip the end. but to to it gradually--start with a very small hole and then slowly increase the size of it, little by little reducing its effectiveness.
  14. kind of a non-answer, but i think it'll either be Gamel or LaPorta, whichever one doesn't get traded away with Jeffress. i'm more partial to LaPorta at 1st, though. he has more power for the position than Gamel does.
  15. for the last few days i was really on the fence about whether i wanted to buy a Lamborghini or not, but now this Sirius offer is what's really sold me and made the difference.
  16. tonight's forecast: dark.
  17. that first song, i love it when bands whistle.
  18. Hank Steinbrenner has always struck me as that slightly-tipsy fan in the cheap seats yelling out his half-ignorant baseball knowledge to anyone who will listen. and now that Hank has an audience, he just yells idiot stuff all the more. from the unique pleasure of seeing our team in both leagues, i couldn't be happier that we're in the NL with no DH. the extra decisions a manager has to make in the NL seems to breed a lot more debate and second-guessing from the fans.
  19. http://www.professionaltravelguide.com yeah, it's the company I work for, but there's no registration or charges involved. so while these aren't personal recommendations, i do think it'll be a good help in your search around Minneapolis.
  20. Kind of Blue is an excellent choice for some lighter stuff. it's basically all-the-time background music at my place. Wes Montgomery and Theloneus Monk both have some excellent lighter stuff, too. I strongly recommend Delfeayo Marsalis on the trombone. Pontius Pilot's Decision is a lighter album and is awesome.
  21. Birth of the Cool.
  22. i think that's an excellent idea, and SD would do that in a heartbeat. and with Maddux probably retiring, they wouldn't be looking at losing a pick if he were to be a Type B FA.

  25. is that Scott Baio in the upper left? pretty sure my mom used to have one of those haircuts.
