  1. it's been mentioned the cost savings/non-savings of being single vs. being married, but the cost savings of being single vs. dating is tremendous. it's like i need a second job to afford dating, but if i had a second job, i wouldn't have time to date. i highly recommend lifting weights for any single person. it uses up all your newfound freetime, you feel better about yourself, and you become more attractive to any potential dates.
  2. i don't think it's a coincidence that the right girl always shows up when the time is right, and i've often fooled myself thinking that I knew when that time was. use being single right now not to pine for being in a relationship, but to better yourself, through whatever means you choose, for the next eventual relationship in your life. more than anything else, think on being single as an opportunity.
  3. plus aren't there statistics that show that protection in a lineup isn't as big a difference maker that a lot of people think? i'm not going to downplay Gamel's ability by saying that it was in big part because LaPorta was in the lineup.
  4. it seems like Gamel gets both a fair and unfair comparison to Braun. fair with his defense, but it seems like parts of all of us think that he's going to be able to come up here and start off gangbusters offensively like Braun did, which is totally unrealistic. we're in a situation with Hall at 3rd (like him or not) and owning Fielder for a few more years, that we can sit on Gamel in AAA maybe even through 2009 and wait for his defense to catch up. are the Brewers really in that much of a win-now mode that we'd sacrifice a good player at such a valuable position as 3b and shift him over to 1st or OF? shift him over to one of those positions and if he has a strong start, his offense would suddenly be league average. and it seems even more important if we're going to go with a young starting rotation not to throw Gamel in there with the wolves and accept subpar defense at that position. heck, even if you don't like Hall there, we have the possibility of Hardy shifting over there for Escobar to come up--then Gamel has a chance to grow while he waits out Hardy's last arbitration year, and our left-side defense would be incredible.
  5. but Bay stays with the Sox for a few years vs. having to deal with Manny all of next year. really like the haul Pittsburgh got with the deal. this is a pretty good trade all around. who leads off for the Dodgers?
  6. heck, i would say there's about no point for passenger trains. there's still some super-heavy freight that's still cheaper by train vs. car, but that amount is sure diminishing.
  7. amen brother. of course it works both ways. it's like people are so afraid to say "i don't want to do this" or "lets go here" for fear that the other person won't like it. but that's the point, to discover likes and dislikes in common. bossy is one thing, but a constant "i'm up for anything" is equally as bad. it's really amazing what sort of abuse some dudes will put up with to be with a girl. (don't get me wrong, i've been one of them). there's that fine line between "all women are crazy" and "THIS woman is crazy." to further the "third wheel" comment, i think it's more about how the couple acts around the third person, whether they pay attention to only themselves and make it more of a date. the separation between the guy and his friend should be equal to the guy and his gf. (man, an awful lot of relationship threads lately)
  8. part of the reason i think we should look into resigning Sheets is that there really aren't any FA starters out there of anywhere-near equal calibur besides CC. but then if we're saving money on Sheets, we really don't have the black holes on offense that would really warrant signing an expensive hitter.
  9. i've learned that the biggest key to finding a girl is to be genuinely happy with your life without one. girls have this "he's desperate" radar that they run from, but the man who doesn't absolutely need a girl is human catnip. i say that to kind of disagree with the "stop looking" comment, because I think every single guy is always looking, just to varying degrees. after a long bout of singledom I'm back on the dating scene again, and it's amazing just how many activities I was involved in before I met my girl (she's still an upgrade, blah blah blah). so many plans and current activities have been put on hold or cut far back. apartment a mess? who cares! did you have a pound of cheese and a beer for dinner? nobody's on your case about it. never having to ask "what would YOU like to do?" I never had to say "sorry, i can't tonight" when friends called me up to do something. coupled people force their single friends into being the third wheel all the time.

a giant corporation learning about my search habits isn't the biggest worry in my life. even if it's a customized "Buy Brewers Gear Here!!!!" pop-up ad instead of a general one, it's going to be equally annoying. besides, can't you buy stuff or get a program that scrambles your IP address?
  11. I really enjoy heading to one of those lowdown art gallery/junk stores on dates--those ones that are named "Antiques Barn" or something and are basically one giant garage sale. 1. it's like shopping, so chicks love that to begin with. 2. you can show your funny side with the ugly clothes or other horrible things and make jokes in general 3. anything that's actually interesting you can show your inquisitive side 4. it's a great way to share your likes/dislikes 5. Every few feet an item will remind you of a story from when you were a kid 6. never a dull moment since there's always something new you're looking at though I don't like the really fancy art places as much because you have to be pretty quiet and you can't really make fun of stuff. plus the junk store sets a great, relaxed mood and doesn't have that aire of "we're on a date". I love that tarot card/palm reader idea. it sounds like it would be fun even if it isn't a first date, too.
  12. one can only imagine what their real nicknames are inside the clubhouse. i think the announcers only do it because there's an aire of familiarity to it, as if they're spending their days on the team plane when not on the television.
  13. Hawing's avatar reminds me that there are not nearly enough Kool-Aid flavours at the grocery store. it's rare enough that I even find grape.
  14. hey now, Weeks isn't underperforming because he's never performed, according to Yost. so that means he's doing fine.
  15. huh. i was thinking that about Weeks. can't figure out what he gives that Escobar couldn't.

i searched for Professional ___ ___ and only got results for "professional". so i guess quotes matter. tried the term in quotes, but i'm guessing the server's flooded today or something? eh, just another search engine. doesn't matter; Google is already like Q-Tips or Kleenex, that the brand name is better-known than the product itself.
  17. you could sign any FA hitter for that price and not have to give up any good players. plus you could get a guy who's a little younger. boy, to think how bad his LF defense would be if he lost a step or two...
  18. I brought work home with me this weekend, and instead of actually doing it, I got hooked on playing Civilization IV for seven hours tonight. now it's midnight and I have two hours of work to do yet. stupid CivIV, I'm going to give you away so I can't play you anymore.
  19. grew up there, but didn't take any dates around. Ice-skating is an awesome first date. Don't remember the name of the place, but there's open skate sometimes in Middleton where the women's hockey team plays. plus even if neither of you skate, then all the fumbling around makes for a lot of laughs and shows you can be a fun/funny guy. the Union was a thought of mine, too. make a picnic lunch and take her there to watch or play some frisbee or just sit out on the lake. it shows off your cooking skills if you have any, it's a good spot to talk and then sitting on the benches overlooking the lake.
  20. i was thinking Tampa Bay might eventually fall out of the race to begin with, and this obviously can't help. I bet there's going to be a good push in Tampa to acquire somebody now. Pittsburgh finally makes the right move. these were two guys who are definitely replaceable. now trade Jason Bay! (just not to St. Louis)
  21. he'd have to be DFA'd and would be snatched up in a second. even if he doesn't play much, he's an awesome LH pinch-hitter off the bench. the opportunity to throw in a LH here and there to our rightie lineup is pretty important. plus Branyan is a vet and likely can handle not playing as much than someone like a Gwynn could.
  22. I'm gonna start rooting for Belgium. I totally think it can pass Greece. Go Belgium!
  23. it'll definitely take at least a solid playoff run for the Brewers to really start showing up in polls vs. the Packers. if the Bucks were making a playoff run, would anybody notice?
  24. "Yeah, Rosie, now that I'm Batman, I've just got so much on my plate right now. I just can't give you the attention you deserve anymore. It's like we're headed in different directions...." Horses are kinda useless now.
