  1. yeah, i lived in Fort Atkinson for two years. it wasn't anything special of a city, but you have to factor in the fact that Madison is only :45 away, so i'd pretty much always be there for something to do. plus if you know where to look you can still find dollar tappers, and that alone has to take it out of the running for worst. also Miller Park is :45 minutes away, too, so not a terrible drive to still catch a night game. man, i can't believe i just defended Fort Atkinson, a place i was still happy to move out of. ah, Fort Atkinson, 45 minutes away from everything, and 5 minutes away from nothing at all.
  2. yeah, i'm 30 and have been doing that sort of thing since college. what DOA said is completely right, it ain't the life-altering experiece you think it might be. move for a woman or career opportunity or warmer weather, but not if you're in a rut or have a couple friends somewhere else. although if you're thinking of a move to Chicago from Racine, i don't see what would be so tough. it would stink, granted, but for the first week or so until you find a place in Chicago, you can make the commute until then. Save up money--i can't think of a single question that "save money" wouldn't be a good answer for.
  3. wow, i've seriously got absolutely nothing that i'd say is a perk of my job. that's sad. the record for my coworkers never uttering a word to each other=3.5 days (no cubicles in my office, either) ok, so this is slightly off-topic, but it at least fits a job thread. i did an experiment last year by wearing the exact same outfit to work every day--same shirt, pants, shoes and belt, to see if anyone would notice. made the whole thing pretty scientific. i made it six working days without anyone noticing at all (i didn't change my routine or conversational habits one bit). i had to stop only because of meetings with executives. i concluded it was more human nature not to notice something ultra-ordinary like that vs. a matter of my unique office atmosphere. however if anyone else would like to conduct the experiment themselves, i'd definitely be interested in the results.
  4. the Earl of Sandwich.
  5. what bugs me is i signed up for a year at a gym in small part to meet people, and i've discovered i'm the only one anywhere near my age, and i'm 30. i'm debating telling them i'm moving away in order to break the contract, then just joining a different one. dilemma, though, is that should a girl my age actually join my gym one day, i'm like the only option, and that's pretty good odds. making general friends, though, that's not really happing there until i turn 50.
  6. dang. that was an easy one??? the inventor of the gas mask? wow, i'm definitely never going to get one of these. well, or maybe i just need to read more.
  7. are their unwritten rules for these things? should they generally be singers/actors/inventors so that they're a general everybody-might-know sort of thing, or could we go generally-obscure historical figures and people like that? like the first US gold-medal kayaker or similarly random? (but no, i don't ask as if i'm about to post a million random ones or anything like that, just curious).
  8. no doubt i'd put my finger in my nose.
  9. it goes against Melvin's philosophy of only signing a pitcher to a four-year contract. and i kinda think that by 09, the prospects that we'd keep instead of making the trade are going to amount to more wins than what Santana would give us. and like what was mentioned before, for the next six years we end up in a situation like we have with Sheets, that if Santana would go down for an extended period of time, the team would hugely suffer. no doubt Gallardo would be a piece of that trade, plus Sheets wouldn't be resigned, so we'd end up with a rotation similar to Houston's for a lot of years.
  10. i'm not sure what to make of dancing Spider-Man. at first i really laughed, but now he's starting to creep me out.
  11. i see it mostly as Attanasio's decision. should Prince project like he has, will MA want to spend the big money so that he can have a potential HOF player retire with a Brewers jersey. the whole thing about friendships or liking the city doesn't factor in a bit for me. that's never been Boras' m.o. he only ever uses that to get the home team to overpay, and since when do Boras' clients stay on their original team? not too often.
  12. very interesting question. i think i'd take Ramirez, but i could change my mind. yeah Reyes steals more, but i'm more interested in SB% than total number, because Reyes is probably just given the green light more often. total number of steals i list up there with RBIs, that it's more a matter of circumstance.
  13. my Shea Stadium experience was ok. didn't get to talk to the fans, but it was the best live baseball game i've ever seen. down 2 in the 9th and we rally for 5 in the top of the inning. Mets score 2 in the bottom and we win by one. i was yelling the whole time, it was awesome. Shea, though, i really can't think of a worse stadium. man that place deservedly needs to be torn down; what a dump. just nothing redeeming about that stadium at all. the area around there ain't the greatest, either. at least it's easy to find via subway. i wasn't able to stick around because i had my backpack hidden in some bushes at a suburbia station and i was starting to get afraid it would be found and get stolen.
  14. my brother is the same height and has to get all his clothes custom-made, and it ain't cheap. also, Shaq ain't exactly getting his stuff from Men's Warehouse, he's probably having it shipped from Italy. and don't forget his wife wandering around the highest-end clothing shops in Miami all day. and not just a personal chef, but a personal chef who has to fly to every single game with him, plus probably two more to cook for his family when he's away. either way, though, dang. what happens when he retires and doesn't have that income anymore? (i've heard rumour that Shaq is considering MMA when he retires)
  15. i've seen many many bears while hiking, some awful close. i'm not too scared of bears (black ones, anyway), but i'm sure scared of cougars. i've had a handful of friends who've seen them in the wild despite how rare it is to see one. related, one friend of mine woke up to a Florida panther in his camp one night (<50 in the wild). in none of my friends' stories did they say "wow it was sure cool to see one" but their stories usually end with them having to find clean pants.
  16. you should bartend or waiter since you're open weekends and seem like you can work late-night hours.
  17. if knowledgeable fans is a criteria, avoid Denver. lived out there for a couple years. the fans are so completely apathetic about the game and don't really even cheer. and that was before their pennant, so i'd imagine you wouldn't find apathy but fair-weatherness now. the brother lives out there now, said during the playoffs he'd see people decked out head to toe in Rockies gear asking each other what other teams played in the NL East. but Coors field is in an absolutely gorgeous place to watch a game, the skyline immediately to your east and the sun setting over the foothills to the west--awesome.
  18. if the Brewers wanted him to get bigger, wouldn't they just put him on a weight-gain and heavy lifting program?
  19. i can't watch the matches right now, but i'm a tennis player and i've always preferred women's pro vs. the men's. the women's is more comparitive to the way regular people play in that they have actual rallys and longer points.
  20. i had no idea that was a even a courtesy thing. but since you're going to have to move the pin from 0, what does it matter if you have to move it from 80, instead? my gym just bought 20 new treadmills, and for a machine that just helps you walk in place, they each look like they've got supercomputers on top of them.
  21. absolutely love Holy Grail but not a giant fan of their other two movies. there's a ton of good stuff from their TV show, though. my favourite is probably The Olympics for Men Acting Like Women. I'm sorry, your walk just isn't silly enough.
  22. yeah, i got a laugh out of it tonight, too--if I'd only seen your post before i left the house tonight. no problem, though, no doubt this thread will answer a question or two in the future for somebody.
  23. i'd only imagine Sheets' total involvement in ownership consists of throwing parties with his friends in his suite.
