what i've always heard is that since the sleeper cars are rarely full, it's no real problem to get a regular coach seat then tip the porter $20 or $40 to get you into a sleeper car.

my father did the Covance thing once. when he did it, there were levels of the drug/test that you could sign up for, and what they paid depended on what you were willing to put up with sick-wise. you were somewhat confined, but you could do whatever in the room because they were just testing the effect of the drug. one person would get the placebo. at least in his study, the lower-paying groups ended up mildly sick, while the higher-paying groups pretty much wretched most of the time. you'd think it'd be sweet to be the placebo guy because you don't get sick, but then every sick person hated you. the father did one of the lower-end studies and said it wasn't too bad. i've done the temp agency stuff before, and you can just tell them you're only available weekends or nights to do extra work. they'll call you about jobs, whether it's one-day stuff or longer, and you can just decline whatever work you don't feel like doing. i did some longer-term work helping out at a college bookstore (even got a promotion ahead of the regular employees, who were jealous of me thereafter), and did some day-stuff like filling in for a secretary who was sick and some inventory stuff. it's all idiot work.

of course, at this point, it's easy to say that pretty much every member of brewerfan knows well more about the Milwaukee Brewers fantasy-wise or otherwise, then any national sports outlet. even besides this article, there's been nothing that's ever come as a surprise to me or really informed me of anything, and to a large part it's not about the quality of their writing, but just how much we've all studied Brewers players on our own. yeah, it's neat to read a Brewers article, but nothing has surprised me for a long time.

Rudy finally makes it in the game and he's the only thing between the RB and the endzone. Because of Rudy's size, the RB just bowls him over and scores the winning TD. Rudy becomes the laughingstock of Notre Dame and has to go back to work in the factory for the next 30 years. in Elf, Will Ferrell really isn't an elf, but a man with some serious mental illnesses. the Grinch steals Christmas and never has a change of heart. The movie ends with a widening pan of Mary Lou Who standing in the middle of cold, desolate Whoville, silently sobbing.

what bugs me is he is one of their top fantasy guys and these are people who you'd expect to be looking harder at the smaller teams like the Brewers. it's so hard to really pinpoint one thing he says to argue with, because a half-page later he contradicts himself. there were more than a few examples of that. Karabell is paid to thump out articles like mad, so in some ways i'd expect him to lean more on experience than research. i think it's more about the poor editor who let this thing pass through. numbers aside, it's just plain poorly written. my own editor would have torn this thing apart. and heck, forget editing, don't they have factcheckers over there at espn? Fielder's HRs last year? is that hard to look up? Karabell re-reads this, the editor looks at it, it goes through factcheck, and then the web editor posts it, so right there is four people, and none of them know how many HRs the NL-leader hit last year? and did i read it wrong, or did he actually say Munson would be a viable NL-only fantasy option? I'm not saying Munson will be bad, but in a 10-team league, would you be drafting a teams' backup catcher?

i guess i kind of wanted to piggyback the San Francisco job help question of earlier, but it does seem like finding jobs these days is about networking, and you folks are kinda it. so if anyone can help i'd be very grateful. looking for magazine (ideally) or book publishing work. and i know i'm chopping off 90% of the people on this board by saying it, but after moving away from Wisconsin, I've been liking this warmer weather and would prefer to stick with a warmish-weather place unless its for something pretty incredible. otherwise no real geographic limitations. any help would be hugely appreciated. i'm kinda fearful the way the industry is, that looking beyond North Carolina is going to be rough, and I'm also thinking that quitting my current editing job and just moving somewhere will be resume death.

naw, i don't think you can totally bash Podsednik anymore. with the Brewers he started strong and then just fell off, so the bashing was maybe more justified. but at this point the Rockies know exactly what they're getting and you're taking him for what he is.

I always thought Matt Millen was pretty decent doing football games. I have the feeling he'll be back on TV soon enough. I believe his name is Jason Klapisch, the late-night guy on XM. he has an excellent general-baseball show during the season. also has an excellent knowledge of minor-league players, so people call up about minor-league guys just as much as major-league ones. so i guess the evolution of commentating has gone first the one-liner guys like Madden and Vitale; then the booth as entertainment like Dennis Miller; and now we're thrown lots eye-candy like Erin Andrews. wonder where commentating will head next.

i think making friends is just a matter of going out to do what you like to do. if you've got knowledge or interest in sport, pool, cards, golf, whatever, just try to get around the same type of people. either people will want to talk to you because you have knowledge, or better yet, you ask them questions and they get to talk to you about it. looks like I'll be moving out of state somewhat soon, too. just started to look for jobs, so hopefully the long-distance interview process won't pose too many difficulties. even though i'm 30 and would prefer my own place, i think i'll split a room with somebody, a good way to save money and a fast way to learn about the city. granted, i need that job first....

Brandon Webb on the Brewers: Prince Fielder

TracyThom, I asked my coworkers and they generally like the Winston-Salem school district (I'm working in downtown Winston right now). The land is uber-cheap, real estate is the worst it's been in 30 years here, so it's a great time to buy. And probably like Milwaukee, you have to take the crime statistics with a grain of salt because it's localized. you can't think of Winston-Salem as a university-town, though. it's only about 1,200 students, and they're all med students with rich daddys, so that typical college atmosphere you may be thinking of, of students mulling about, cultural activities and all that stuff really doesn't exist. I only want to add all that because if you're looking for a vibrant sort of city, this ain't it. At 10 pm on Friday and Saturday night, I am often the only one on the sidewalks. Though I do expect things to pick up with the downtown ballpark going up in 09. it's the #1 city in the nation to retire to, cheap land in the city or country, fine for raising kids, awesome weather, but it's population and Wake Forest being here is pretty deceiving.

i thought Bush has the biggest room for improvement going into this season. to me it seemed like in some of his starts he'd have a major hickup but had pitched pretty well up until then, but a lot of games he'd be brilliant throughout and really keep us in the game. say he cuts those major gaffs by 1/3 this season and you've got a 15-game winner no problem.

i've been debating a change in career. i'm wondering if anyone here has any particular knowledge about both the schools or any thoughts they'd share on being a professional dealer. I do have much experience on the player's side of the poker table if that makes much of a difference. I'm not really thinking about it as a career at this point, but I'm thinking I could possibly deal at night and take maybe a Masters program during the day.

as brettac said, i'm a huge fan of Ron Jaworski. what i really like so much is he doesn't talk down to you at all and talks to you like you already understand the game. Jaws makes me smarter by listening to him. he's my Bizarro John Madden. i'm spacing on his name, but the former ESPN guy who does the Dodger games on the radio is pretty good, too. no other comments on him, i just think he's good. the downside to having XM is I don't get to hear Uecker call an away game, but the upside is i get to hear so many different people call games and catch so many different styles.

I'm in Winston-Salem. i'm thinking we very well might be the only two baseball fans in this state, because i sure haven't found any (also, i apparently could use some tips to Match.com, because my membership was useless) I did Denver for two years after Wisconsin, but moved in with a friend. even still, you have to go out on your own just because you end up glomming onto one person and don't venture out too far. have been in North Carolina for two years now. originally moved in with a cousin, but not only did he work all the time, but had a girlfriend and moved away a couple months later. maybe i'm not one for advice, because i only have one good friend here, though. if you go to church, the small church groups are a great way to meet people. oh, and get a dog if you don't have one, then go to the dog park often, it's an awesome way to meet people, especially girls. can't recommend that one enough. i do the bar thing somewhat often and know some regulars, but at the same time there's not a real permanence to the people you meet there. bar-league poker is an excellent way of meeting people. or a pool league. a busy gym seems to work (unfortunately i chose an old-people gym). and use a strength--you obviously know what you're talking about when it comes to baseball, so check out the local games and it's never too hard to wind up talking baseball with some fans there. culture-wise, yeah, i do miss Wisconsin. it's way different here in NC, definitely a stay-at-home culture that doesn't exist in Wisconsin. sometimes i think about going back, but same as you, eight months of winter is six months too long. even sports-wise, i have to make a big effort to listen to and keep up with the teams. and actually, a part-time job helped me meet people. professional jobs are harder because you're often dealing with parents who go home to their kids or just people who don't go out and drink after work (like here)--plus then all you talk about is work after work, and that stinks. but some idiot part-time work, nobody there takes things too seriously and they're often up for going out to do something in their free time. not home for holidays kinda stinks, but they pass pretty quickly. but at the same time, the whole move is really freeing. you'll never feel so free and unchained, and for the first six months, it's kinda neat not having no clue, and every single thing is new and different to you. but i warn you, whichever city you're thinking of, DO NOT choose Winston-Salem.

I"ve been paying attention to what is happening with Ryan Howard because I think Fielder will end up taking pretty much the same path pay-wise. Beauty for Melvin is Howard is a couple years ahead, so Melvin's going to get a good idea of what to expect. i'll be real curious if Fielder accepts one or two years of FA bought out. since it's not Boras' style, i'd only take that to mean Fielder pushed him to stay a little longer in Milwaukee. i do think there's going to be some motivation to keeping Fielder around, just because he's going to be the best of the bunch, and it's never a bad thing for a team to have a character guy and a huge producer like Fielder be the face of the franchise for a long time. he'd sell a lot of tickets on his own and get us a ton of exposure. but then it's all about the money. you look at the Tigers and they sure started spending after their pennant, so maybe one or two of our own will really change the direction Melvin is allowed to go with these guys. edit: oh, and for all our desire to keep most or all of these hitters, we can't forget about our rotation. Gallardo (hopefully) won't come cheap, either, and he's not a whole lot farther behind Braun and Hart. Throw in a FA #2 pitcher and we're not even close to a reasonable budget.

well, Wikipedia says that Glenn Braggs is married to a former Miss Black America California, so i'd guess whatever he's doing now, he's pretty happy. Braggs was totally my favourite player growing up. i remember watching a game and seeing him break a bat across his back on a swingthrough. it was awesome.
