  1. Mr. Heat: You're hearing lots of talk about deals with the Rays and Indians. Do you know of any other team/ Starting Pitcher that the Brewers have serious talks going on?
  2. Granted we really have no idea how other major league teams rank guys like Supak and Pennington, but considering they have been dealt in the last couple years in very minor deals, it would stand to reason that neither is held in very high regard. And they haven't necessarily done much in their time in the Brewer system to raise their prospect status. Also, this would be the ultimate "sell low" on Ortiz, as he fought injury and ineffectiveness at AA last year. If the Rays accepted this deal, I wouldn't wait until the ink was dry to fax it to the MLB offices. But there is absolutely no way they'd accept it. If Archer is coming this way, top prospects are going back. Top prospects that had great seasons last year. I'm going to stick with my prediction of Santana, Burnes, Peralta and Gatewood. If Burnes stays, we are adding Hiura+. I don't disagree with you, I'm sure that's what TB wants. It's just that I wouldn't do it. There's other options out there, and there's no way I'm giving away both Burnes/Peralta. Guessing (and it is just a guess) that's why Stearns hasn't agreed to this either. I think a deal like that is really minimizing Santana's value too.
  3. Agree, I want to keep all these players in your list too. Burnes should be untouchable. Stearns had already say no to the Rays and I hope he remains steadfast in keeping Burnes. Problem is, other teams love the same guys the Brewers love, for the most part. We all have our top 10 lists, so do the publications. But Peralta and Erceg for example are two guys that I think have a higher value out there than what we give them credit for. I guess my whole thing is, if we're going to give up lots of quantity in these deals, what we're left with better be top quality.
  4. Santana, Ortiz, Supak, Pennington I simply do not want to deal away Phillips, Burnes, or Peralta. As I look over what's left of our top 10-15, those are the guys I keep at almost all costs, along with Hiura and Erceg.
  5. Smaller version of the Favre saga when both sides were right, both were wrong. I think they should have talked to Rodgers about it, just out of courtesy to your HOF QB. But I don't like that Rodgers went public with his frustration. It could create a rift, and if they cut Nelson or Cobb or someone Rodgers really wants around, that could add to it. Plus, I really wonder what the relationship is between Rodgers and MM to begin with.
  6. Yea, the Brewers will likely never have the best 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation. Recent years have proven the best 1-2 punch doesn't win the WS, and often times not even make it there. If you put together a really good roster, with a really solid rotation you have as good a chance as that team with the big 1-2 at the top. The ol' "hot hand" becomes very important in the playoffs. At that point it doesn't matter if a pitcher is true ace, what his ERA was all season, or what his career WAR is. He just needs to pitch every well in a couple games, and if you have a really good 1-5, you're likely to get that performance out of a couple of your pitchers.
  7. Did someone mention something about hurt feelings?
  8. Or more?! Where does he think that money is coming from? It's not likely, but not impossible that Mark A would blow up the salary for a few years. They have had real low payroll for the last several years in the piggybank. Plus, he is a billionaire with a baseball hobby. He wants to win, so does it really matter if payroll is $170MM or whatever for a few years? The value of the team has gone up substantially since he bought them, so that's another factor. So looking at it that way, he's still far from losing money if he explodes the payroll for a few years. Maybe I'm just looking at it from the "what would I do if I had a billion" point of view. I would want to win, even if I lost money for a couple years on my hobby while raking in massive amounts in my day job over the past year.
  9. Meeting is to discuss do we really want to trade away a huge chunk of our top prospects for a solid starting pitcher? As I take a step back for all this, that's a question I'm starting to ask. Am I a "prospect hugger?" You bet. Baseball, when all is said and done, is entertainment. And I really enjoy following our guys in the system, new guys added to the system, etc. We debate, argue, and discuss these guys and I love seeing how they actually turn out when they graduate to Miller Park. That said, yes it's still about winning. But I have a hard time accepting how quickly we're trading away (or trying to) everyone in a couple weeks when it's taken years to build up the farm to where it is today.
  10. No idea, but that would be a valid reason at least. Just seems like a perfect fit for the Brewers with that contract, so I figure there's gotta be something else going on. Maybe that's it. It sure isn't because of Voghts non-guaranteed contract.
  11. As with any trade, depends what you get back. But in general, Brogdon strikes me as a player who will be part of a championship team. Problem is, his next contract will be more than 9MM.
  12. Exactly. No one will "force" Stearns to do diddly-pooh. We worry more than he is probably. Another way to put it. Would Stearns/CC PREFER to have Phillips as the 4th OF? Yes, I think they would. Do they NEED him to be right now? No. And I agree, Broxton isn't even a thought. If you can get a couple high ceiling lottery guys back, trade him. Otherwise, AAA is fine for him right now.
  13. Let's face it, there's not enough track record for either Thames/Aguilar to accurately predict what they'll do in 2018. So, we're all pretty much going by what we "think." Just watching both players last year, I feel pretty confident Aguilar can repeat his numbers. I just like his approach, his swing. We all know Thames was really bad after his Ruthian April. Truly, all Thames has over Aguilar is his LHB. But as someone said, that's not insignificant. I do like the idea of having Walker back to backup Braun at 1B. Problem at 2B then, with Sogard also LH and Villar better as LH. So that makes any type of platoon tough. Thing is, I just don't trust what Thames can do. His upside is higher, for sure. But his floor is too. Maybe it's just a comfort level thing, but I would roll with Aguilar and/or Walker on the roster.
  14. Yea, they should have sold high on Espino too after he had that avereage-ish start against the Cubs. Blew that one.
  15. This is just a forecast, none are perfect. Although this is what I use, and it has proven to be extremely accurate. Still crunching the numbers for the 2018 season. http://ishootthepictures.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/vlcsnap-2011-11-03-17h47m32s60.jpg
  16. I understand the concern. I guess my question is why is it shortsighted that he doesn't start in April, 2018? If he start next year, or even later this year, is that really a wasted opportunity? It would be better for him to build up stamina this year. If it waits until next year, can they really expect 180 innings from him? Probably not unless he pitches a lot of multi-inning stints and we make the playoffs this year. True, but there's a flip-side to that. Limiting his innings now could keep him "fresher" down the road. What if they keep him in the pen for 3 years, then sign him to a new contract for 8 years? Flip the switch, and you have your TOR starter for the next 8 years. And you saved money because he isn't coming off three years as a successful starting pitcher.
  17. I understand the concern. I guess my question is why is it shortsighted that he doesn't start in April, 2018? If he start next year, or even later this year, is that really a wasted opportunity?
  18. I don't doubt that he will be a good bullpen arm, just like I don't doubt that Santana would make a good bench bat. I just don't think it's the way to maximize the player's value to the Brewers. I do think having him in the pen this year and signing some 30 year-olds to long-term deals will make the 2018 Brewers better. I just don't think it's the best thing for a couple of years from now. I'm a financial planner. I constantly talk with people about where they'll be a decade or three from now, so I'm wired to worry about future ramifications of current moves. I know it can be annoying. I'll still enjoy this season even if I worry about some of the teams' moves. Agree completely Monty, that wasn't directed at you.
  19. As many others have said, he is not necessarily destined to the pen forever. It makes perfect sense this year, as they have decided to compete, and Hader is known quantity in the pen. Worst case scenario, say he never starts. There is nothing wrong with having a late inning/ closer locked up for many years. Brewers have been fortunate to have cheap guys like Knebel in that role, but it's only a matter of time before they would need to pony up a lot of cash or top prospects for a closer. So having Hader fill that role is not a bad thing. That said, I still think he will get a shot in the rotation at some point. That some time could even be this year at some point depending on how everything shakes out. A lot of unforeseen things happen over the course of a 6 month season.
  20. Part of me kind of hopes to see him used as a trade piece to a team that wants to start him. I don't want the Brewers to lose him but I also want to see this electric arm flourish. Just not sure that will be in a Brewers uniform. It really is a shame. It's a shame when anonymous fans believe they know more than professionals who are paid to make decisions like this. There is no evidence, none, that shows Hader will not flourish in a Brewers uniform.
  21. HH19 had a banner year ice fishing, the haul was so large he's still cleaning them. He hasn't had time to announce Hank the Dog has been traded for Rally Monkey and a gimmick to be named later.
  22. Well, Cleveland will turn it on when it's time. But they do have a realistic shot at the 4th spot, which would give them home court advantage. There must be a big that can help them without having to give up Brogdon, etc. Ideally not another Plumley.
  23. I think that's a HUGE overvalue for McKenzie. He's a good prospect to be sure, but value-wise, he isn't far off of what Woodruff is. I get the feeling reading this thread that we are substantially undervaluing our own guys, while overvaluing Cleveland's. Santana straight up for McKenzie would be a steal for Cleveland. I don't agree. McKenzie's ceiling is TOR, Woodruff's is not. Like it or not Santana's value is not what we think it should be. Brewers likely don't have their own TOR guy in the system, so you have to either take some chances like this or pay massive amounts of money or prospects to get a proven one.
  24. Santana, Aguilar, and Woodruff for McKenzie
