  1. Worst hitter? Not in the lead-off spot. I think the state heads here greatly over-emphasize OPS and under-value OBP when it comes to the lead-off spot. Before anyone brings it up, I understand and don't care how many times a game the lead-off hitter actually leads off an inning. That's missing the point. The idea is to have the lead-off man on base as ogten as possible when Braun, Fielder, and Hart are up. I rather have someone get on base consistently with those guys at the plate than a guy who can hit some HRs here and there.
  2. Forogt one earlier, the entire Bond series. My son really got into those around that age. They do tend to be long and drag on at times. There is violence of course, depends how you feel about that. It's not gory or anything. And you have to put up with 007's wandering hands with the ladies here and there.
  3. I think we all understood Gagne and Mota were high risk/high reward signings. Riske, on the other hand, seemed very safe. I didn't expect dominance, but I did expect consistency. If he can get it together, it would make everything fall in place in the bully. Villanueva/McClung for long/middle relief, Stetter your LOOGY, Shouse LOOGY+, Riske set-up man and then Torres. Not a lights-out bullpen, but probably good enough. Riske is below his career (and recent) numbers in virtually every category. ERA, WHIP, BB/SO, etc. If his arm isn't right, that's a problem. Otherwise, it's reasonable to assume he can return to form for the stretch run. C'mon David, we need you!
  4. Laugh if you must, but Counsell has been doing very well leading off against RH pitchers. I don't know how to find stats that separate out his overall numbers vs lead-off numbers, but I would bet his OBP is very respectful.
  5. Interesting to see everyone in a rush to trade Prince. A team leader, a guy still putting up very good numbers, and won't be a FA for a while yet. Also, do you realize the huge impact he's having on Braun and Hart's numbers?
  6. If Hardy is moved, 3B makes more sense to me. Limited range and strong arm translates better for 3B than 2B. I am completely open to trading Weeks. Not just for the sake of trading him, I would expect good value in return. But I wouldn't trade any of them due to a perceived log jam that is a year or two away.
  7. My dream would be to find two established, effective arms in the BP- one if not both LH. Riske and Torres are the type of players I'm talking about. Every ML bullpen will have problems from time to time, but I would love to get our BP as "set" as possible. Unless a deal is WAY to good to pass up, I would not trade Escobar, Gamel, Hardy, Hart, Fielder, Gallardo, or Parra. Just about anyone else would be fair game. Go get one #1/#2 type pitcher. Plenty of money to get one via FA or trade after loosing the Sheets/CC/Gagne/Cameron/Mota contracts. Get an "emergency" 5th starter. Another arm who could be a legit #5 if needed. A LH, lead-off hitting CF. Or 2nd if Weeks is traded. I don't know WHO those players would be, my dream is a bit fuzzy yet.
  8. Right, it's hard to explain to some people. I try to explain the REASON doesn't matter, it's just proper golf etiquette. I will also line-up for a put, then notice my wife already putting (out of turn) out of the corner of my eye. She know when I'm away, I put first. She jsut doesn't think any of it is a big deal. That stuff drives me nuts.
  9. Well, they've only had to pay him for half of one season. They can risk waiting until the off-season, or take what they can get now. They're suddenly in the dump salary mode. I wouldn't give up Escobar or Gamel, but Salome and TGJ might be enough.
  10. Generally speaking, bad FA signings don't bother me as much as bad trades. At least with a bad FA signing you're not giving up talent, just wasting money. The Doug Davis trade bothers me the most. Sheets, Parra, Eveland, Davis and Bush would look good right now with Gallardo returning next year. And LaPorta would still be here more than likely.
  11. Been there, done that. I don't suggest, I demand you have her go take lessons from anyone other than yourself. Ideally, as she's taking lessons she would golf with other friends, or people she meets while taking lessons. If possible, don't play with her until she can shoot around 110 or better, otherwise it's pure agony. But regardless, when you do golf with her, explain to her you will not offer any tips. And you HAVE to stick to that. Just explain you would love to help, but you don't want to give her advice that differs from what her instuctor is telling her. Just relax and do the best you can. (That worked for me.) The only time I had anything critical to say was regarding course etiquette, because you can't (or at least I can't) jsut let that slide. Talking while I'm swinging, walking in my line, etc. It is a mixed blessing having your wife take an interest in golf, believe me.
  12. You would have to packgae him with a player that does have value- like Weeks.
  13. Bedard is interesting because he wouldn't be a 2 month "rent-an-arm." If CC and Sheets both leave, you would still have Gallardo, Bedard, Parra at the font of the roation- not too shabby. If he jsut has a tired arm, the Brewers are in position to let him rest on the DL for a while. Seattle clearly wants to deal him.
  14. If you thought the Yankees threw crazy money around in the past, just wait for this off-season. We like to have this romantic idea that players would want to stay here and take a home town discount to do so. That's just not reality. Heck, I could see the Yankees throwing $25MM at both CC and Sheets. If they don't go after one of them, Boston will. Or the Cubs, Phillies, Mets, god knows who else. As much as I would love to have one or both of them, if the bidding war gets ridiculous (and it will) it's better to walk away. $25MM would be 1/4 of the total payroll for one player, and that doesn't make sense. Not when you're trying to extend Hart, Hardy, and others. In fact, I rather extend Parra and Gallardo than pay $25MM for anybody. I think you could make a salary like that work for the next year or two, but after that you have a lot of young talent to sign. I think you have to assume they will both be gone. Gallardo, Parra, Suppan, Bush is not bad. They just need a guy who can be a borderline #1/#2 for $17MM or so. And maybe trade for another guy would be an improvement over Suppan.
  15. 1) More production from lead-off spot: I understand Weeks has picked it up the last few games. Is that a trend or a temporary up-tick. Ideally, I would like to see a another reserve IF capable of leading -off. And for the right deal, I wouldn't be opposed to trading Weeks for a 2B with an OBP at least 20-30 points higher. This really is the missing piece to consistently scoring more runs. 2) Villanueva: He needs to play an important role in the 2nd half. I don't care if it's in middle relief, 8th inning, or starting. Maybe all of the above. He has the stuff to be lights out, I'm just looking for a little more consistency. 3) Bullpen LHP: Can Stetter be the guy in pressure packed situations late in the year? I'm not so sure. 4) 8th inning guy: Could be related to #3 if you get the right guy. This has not been WHOAA SOLVVD yet. Is it Mota? No. Gagne? Maybe, but how confident can you be with that solution? Riske? Ditto. 5) LH Bat: Ideally another OF. Big Russ is cooling off, and they really need another LH for PH situations, and it wouldn't hurt if that same person pushed either Cameron or Weeks if they struggle. 6) Suppan- He doesn't need to be lights out, just his typical self. When he comes back, it would be nice if he can give you 6-7 innings and keep you in the game. That would pretty much lock down the rotation, barring injuries.
  16. I didn't ask "permission," in fact I never had any conversation with her parents before I proposed. Frankly, I wished I wouyld have. No big deal now, but I think the whole wedding planning saga would have went more smoothly. Every situation is different. I wouldn't have flat out asked for permission. It would have been more of an assurance that I was going to take care of her, address any concerns he (they) had, etc. Now that I have a daughter, I can definitely say I would appreciate my future son-in-law coming to me to have that conversation. I think we're mincing words a bit. For the most part, there aren't very many poeple on either side that expect you to say "Hey, can I marry your daughter?" It's more of a conversation than a specific question asking permission. It depends on age, culture, history you've had with the future in-laws, etc.
  17. Redd and Williams for Wade and Player X works for me.
  18. Who knows when the Brewers' TV contract expires? I would have to believe they could see quite a bump in revenue next time around. They could even get creative and launch their own channel. Go directly to Time Warner and Comcast, and let some over-the air channel buy the rights to broadcast to cover those without cable. They could even tean up with the Bucks. I'll tell you, if this team ever starts going in reverse attendance will plummet. As ticket prices continue to get crazy, most casual fans won't go out more than once or twice, if at all, unless they're winning. I would prefer that revnue come from advertisers rather than ticket price increases.
  19. Big Mama's House (No idea why, but my kids ove that movie) Great Outdoors Vacation (the original) Big Green Home Alone series Uncle Buck Plains, Trains, & Automobiles (minus the rental car ticket counter scene Pulp Fiction Summer Rental
  20. Works for Cameron, Hall, and Weeks. Just stare at the LF foul pole and swing away!
  21. Anything North of Brown Deer Rd. or West of 124th. The further North or West the better is my motto.
  22. I guess I'm in the minority, but I think the Cubs made the better trade and gave up less. The Cubs, Brewers, and Cards are all RH dominant line-ups, and I think that point has been glossed over. Harden is an injury risk, but a better option IF he is healthy in October. They can afford to have him miss starts July-Sept.
  23. Recent history tells us there's reason for pessimism. Last year's nose dive for example. Is the glass half full or empty? The Brewers have been on a nice run, yet barely caught the Cards, and only gained 4 games or so in that stretch. Will they continue on this pace, especially with CC, and will taht be enough? Will this be a crazy year that requires 95 wins for the WC? Ultimately, these teams are so close it will probably come down to injuries. With that said, I like what Mark A and Melvin are trying to do. 26 years since the WS, and they didn't even win it all that year (of course.) It really bothers me to give up LaPorta, but I've come around to accept the desire to go all out this year while you still have Sheets.
  24. I'm thrilled JJ is raking, but I think the shoulder is a little too convenient explanation. If that's what it takes mentally to turn things around, fine. But Hardy has been very streaky in the past, and this year is really no different. Last year he started out hitting a ton of HRs, then cooled off for a couple months, and got hot again in September. Long term, I think he would be a nice piece of the core. He doesn't daxxle you defensively, but I appreicate how he turns the DP perfectly (giving or receving) and almost always makes a strong, accurate throw to the chest of Prince. He may always go through streaks, but he'll end up hitting around 20HR, hit .275ish, and be a steady, "good clubhouse guy," and fan favorite.
  25. Or Hardy could play 3B in the future, now that Green appears to be gone. Gamel has been playing there, but could move to 1B if Prince leaves, or OF. With HArdy's arm and limited range, 3b may be a better long term spot for him regardless.
