  1. From the Madison Capitol Times: Buser Olney - "I called colleague Peter Gammons yesterday morning and started the conversation saying, "You know who would be perfect if Cashman leaves "¦" I didn't even finish the sentence before he shot back: "Doug Melvin." Again: It's all pure speculation." This speculation might not be as far-fetched as the Cain rumor. But it should be equally distressing to Brewers fans. OK, Melvin wasted $10 million on Eric Gagne. Get over it. Every GM makes mistakes. What Melvin has done since coming to Milwaukee is provide serious, thoughtful, visionary leadership that has turned one of the worst franchises in professional sports into a team that can contend for a title right up until it collapses. The best chance for the Brewers to get over that hump is with Melvin calling the shots. Better than letting Peter Gammons do it. " Very well stated. Big picture, there should be no conversation like this whatsoever. He's taken a comatose franchise and has us complaining about a collapse that cost the playoffs. Personally, I'll take the playoff shot as opposed to going back to 62 wins. As for replacing him with Jack Z because of the bullpen problems, one could argue the reverse. Fire Jack because he hasn'y drafted a relief pitcher that's been effective in 9 years. Either argument sounds equally short sighted. Edit spelling
  2. Sheets is the same as Brett Favre. Shows you flash and splash, brilliant talent, dazzles us all with moments of pure greatness - and just when you think this is it, culmination of of all that promise, el foldo. Sayonara.
  3. Who replaces Melvin? No one. Looking at the trees and not seeing the forest? Pirates, Royals, Reds, Orioles, Rangers etc. - all were in similar spots as the Brewers(or even ahead of the Brewers) when Melvin took over. Last I checked we are are the only one of that group even sniffing the playoffs, and the minors are dripping with prospects. He's done a fantastic job, taken risks - some worked, some did not - but at least he's gone for the grapes. Now our bull pen stinks, so let's knee jerk and fire the GM?. The bull pen of about 27 or 28 other teams stinks too(if you ask their fan base). Fire the GM? Please stop.
  4. Cameron's D has been borderline spectacular. You can go get a pitcher (like one of those is just laying around for free) or you can keep a guy who can run down all of those balls hit in the gap. Any offense we're getting is a bonus, and the pop in his bat is most welcome, if a bit streaky. I have no idea who people think we could just go out get to play CF with no problem (on the cheap and specifying a left handed bat to boot). Outfield stays as is.
  5. It was made pretty clear in the AFL/Hawaii thread that Brantley is going to the AFL. Therefore it is highly unlikely that he his the player involved with the trade, as they have to plan a couple of months ahead of time for these rosters.
  6. I believe Sept call ups count towards their pension time, but it does not start the Arby clock.
  7. I was at the AZ game tonight. Cequa flared a Texas league type hit down the left field line a voice came out of the dugout wondering why he wasn't standing on 2nd. After the inning ended, Mgr walks up to him and the kid's eyes roll as has was taken out of the game. Apparently message sent. Robulak smoked the ball 3 times and might have had 3 hits, except he thought the ball he hit in the hole was through and was rounding towards 1st instead of heading straght for the bag, when the 2nd baseman hopped up from his dive with the ball and threw him out. Carlos George made a truly spectacular double play on a high bounder that reached 2nd the same time he and the base runner got there. Guererro really was dealing, in control all the time.
  8. The Jeffress inigma actually seems kinda logical to me - he's learning how to pitch. In the show, everyone can hit a fastball. Jeffress has been getting by in the lower rungs of the system by being a thrower. But his growth as a professional will have to include hitting his spots, with maybe a couple of MPH off of his stuff. So he's figuring out that his stuff is far more wicked placed properly, than pure gas brought straight on and challenging hitters. So the 4 walks could mean he's trying to learn to live on the black part of the dish with very good stuff, not on the white part of the dish with great stuff.
  9. Jeffress seems to make sense because of lost time, Salome too. Gamel in AZ seems logical, but I thought X mentioning Welch was a good call. It would sure be a good place to see if he is finally putting it all together(isn't he 25 now?), or just having one hot year, with a bunch of fortunate circumstances swirling around him. If Welch is truly as good as his no hitter and his W-L record, it would be a wonderful bolt out of the blue for the Brewers. One thing about Welch and Wright to consider, they both look like they'll have 150+ innings pitched this year. THe Brewers will make a decision on each, as to how far they want to stretch them out.
  10. It would have been Prince. But once he signed with Boras, that was out. No way was I going to follow a player closely who's only goal was to leave as soon as possible. Hey all we ask is keep your options open. Give us the illusion that you might stay. 1.Hardy 2.Hart 3.Braun
  11. Gas that has little movement gets hit, no matter the league. Strictly a wild guess that the mechanical adjustments may have something to do with this.
  12. Yep he's a year older so they tossed him straight into WV to see if he could handle it, and handling it quite well he is. At WV he's also facing arms that have a touch of polish. Komatsu's facing a lot of kids who 8 weeks ago were tossing fastballs down the middle in high school. As I said previously, when Komatsu lights up WV, and then Brevard, I'll get excited. Hey, I'm cheering for the guy. just not ready for the "legend" title.
  13. Gamel's stats took a hit once LaPorta got traded and no longer protected him in the lineup. No one is pitching to him at all. Note that he did not really figure it out until the last 4 or 5 games when he started taking a few walks. Former #1 overall pick David Price challenged him in the first inning the other day and Gamel took him yard. It's actually pretty good practice for Gamel to concentrate on being more patient and selective. His #s are going to be down a bit in the second half, it seems.
  14. There's 3 key elements to answering this question. So the obvious answer is - The Olson twins. Beauty, money and well...........you know.
  15. You might want to check out Logan Shafer. Also a left handed college player, drafted 5 rounds earlier. Shafer's already in West Viginia, also playing CF and putting up better numbers. Tough to get overly excited about college hitters in Helena. Does Komatsu have a chance? You bet. But until he does it at Brevard or Huntsville, I'm not booking his ticket to Milwauke just yet.
  16. R.J.? Wowsers - slapped around pretty good tonight in just 2 innings. Then Fredrickson comes in and pours gas on the fire with 5 walks. Not a good night for a couple of supposedly promising young hurlers.
  17. Wow. 3 more hits tonight for recent draftee Logan Schafer. Small sample size maybe, but pretty impressive sample so far. Already in WV and hitting over .350.
  18. Patience freinds. Players take their own time and course. I, for one, have no problem with projects, especially after round 1. The game is littered with players who bloomed late, throughout its entire history. Look at Ryan Ludwick, or Fernando Tatis this year. Or Scott Podsednik as and example. Whether Brewer makes it or not, I will say this, when I saw him at spring training this year, I could not believe how big he was. He reminded me of Glenn Braggs. Maybe he just needs a position switch to ease his mind at the plate. You just never know what it might take. At times we need to pause and reflect with our expectations.
  19. My daughter's college team lost a chance to go to the NCAA softball tournament last year on just such a play. 2 run homer wins it except the lead runner jumps over home plate. Opponent called the umps back, appealed the play and the home team lost. Big time bummer - it was her senior year.
  20. If everybody can watch their own team on FSN, why would they watch whatever generic game is on FOX? FOX pays a lot of MLB bills with that Saturday pm contract, plain and simple. Money talks, and our idle chatter walks.
  21. Only time I ever heard it before was in the old Saturday morning Dick Tracy cartoons from the 60's. When they went to complete their communication on their wrist watch communicators, Dick Tracy would say "six two and even..........over and out." Not sure if that helps.
  22. I'm a bit fuzzy on the PTBN rules, but I think it says that the specified player must be named within 6 months. Don't draftees have to stay with a club for 12 months after their signing date before they are traded? If this is the case, no current draftees will be included.
  23. Gosh, no one mentions David Welch as a suprise? 8-1 in AA including a nine inning no hitter. ERA just a smidge over 3. Still only 25. Tough crowd.
  24. Bust is truly the wrong word. Not live up to the hype? Maybe. A bust would be Luis Montanez or Mike Stodolka (#3 & #4 in 2000) or Eric Munson (#3 in 1999). Maybe the Brewers should have taken the next player chosen after Weeks instead, Kyle Sleeth? This guy is a solid MLB player, with potential to really break out. Bust? Hardly.
  25. Plain and simple, it will all take care of itself. Bush's next start has no more bearing on his staus than the last 10. Rosters and lineups are fickle. They have their own way of coming into focus. Each guy plays his best and hopes that his skill set fits into the current roster as it is composed that day. There'll be times this year when quality guys get sent down, and there'll times when guys like Nix and Abraham Nunez will be on the team. It's a marathon, not a sprint. When will we all learn this? Posts like "life or death" and "Bush is the one to go" are just uninformed. All of your data based on one start each? What if Bush pitched a one hitter in Chicago and Suppan or Villy got lit up? Then we would only need to switch the name in the headline. Thankfully, there have been some other posts here that have been well thought out.
