  1. Fine. His ERA was 4.5 through August, which is mediocre and pushing 5 at the end of the season, which is bad. As long as Gallardo was available, Suppan was a terrible choice to start game 4.I just looked it up and the following pitchers would have been worse choices to start. Villanueva, Riske, Taveras, Turnbow and Gagne. Those are the only guys with a worse ERA than Suppan. Going with FIP narrows the field to Gagne and Turnbow. Suppan was a crap pitcher by the end of the 2008 season any way you split it.
  2. The team had a winning record in his starts and the team had a winning record during Looper starts. Pitchers only have limited control over winning games. That argument is at best weak.
  3. The reason most managers are generally more successful in their second job is because GM's usually don't hire rookie managers for good teams. Also if you have some managing experience you have more managing options. The whole process is self fulfilling.
  4. I complained that Macha had his pitchers and Gomez bunting to much. Last year I didn't like the stranglehold Macha had on the running game but he seemed to loosen up this year. At least with some of the guys.
  5. I am not on board with trading Lawrie at all at this point. Our offense looks good now but I think we had a couple guys over performing and Fielder will be leaving soon. We do need to improve our pitching but that should happen in the next couple years with some of our minor leaguers being ready. I don't want to see trades for short term gains when we have a chance to be good for several years starting in 2012.
  6. I guess my point is that I don't think he should have. Durham couldn't hold up to being the big half of a platoon. Svuem played small ball and put 2 of his better hitters at the bottom of the order(Weeks, Hardy) when they should have been at the top. He also started Suppan in a playoff game when Gallardo was available. He managed like he thought being a veteran meant more than actual talent. Weeks/Duham at the top followed by Hardy worked well enough even though I disagreed with a strict platoon. He actually batted Hall #2. Over those few games the changes may not have had much impact. I would actually argue they didn't. They would however be terrible of an entire season.
  7. Danizig, to me you're arguing in a circle. Most Brewer fans get their analysis from the paper and the paper doesn't use advanced statistics I think if they just started using at least OBP and OPS instead of batting average and strikeouts that would be enough to keep most people happy. OBP and OPS are not advanced stats. They are however leaps and bounds better than BA and strikeouts. I feel that continuing to use BA and strikeouts along with RBI's is doing all their readers a disservice.
  8. So at the start of next year we will be looking at around $82m or lower in payroll. All those call ups and midseason things are figured in at the start and money is left. The $90m was our payroll at the start of the season including Hall and others we are paying to go away. It does also include all of Wolf's 2010 salary even though he deferred $4m. So our opening day payroll was really very close to $86m and they expected to lose money. If we are paying that $4m in 2011 you are looking at about $82m just staying with a similar budget. I don't think they will stay with a similar budget. I think they will anticipate another drop in attendance and will adjust payroll accordingly. We have $4m in buyouts for next year as well.
  9. I guess I was off by a year then. It wasn't a strict platoon until Svuem took over though unless for some odd reason we face more than half left handed pitchers after acquiring Durham.
  10. WAS one of the great defenseman of the game Brian, was.
  11. He went from playing once or twice a week to 5 times a week. His body couldn't and din't hold up. Weeks was still recovering from the wrist injury he suffered the previous year. By the end of the season Weeks was a better player. His stats were mostly dragged down by playing less than 100% for most of the year.
  12. Our offense with Mauer and their pitching with Gallardo. Is it wrong that I want to see the Reds swept so that the Brewers remain the last NL Central team to win a playoff game.
  13. and Durham missed games because he was injured from playing to much. Weeks also was hitting very well in the last month of the season. He started to hit well about a year after his injury. There was no reaso to play Durham that much. He wasn't playing more than a couple times a week before Svuem took over.
  14. What does Rickie have to do to get himself an A? I can't say what it would take for Weeks to get an A because those kinds of posts are not appropriate for this board.
  15. At least they're starting to use some advanced metrics like UZR and OPS+. Well they are looking at them anyway. If they were actually using them they would have noticed that Weeks was about average according to UZR instead of talking about his errors. They would have also known that a 125 OPS+ was above league average and very good for a 2B instead of talking about the strikeout nonsense. They also would have noticed that Weeks 6.1 WAR was 13th best amongst hitters and 20th best in all of baseball. The only 2B with a better WAR was Cano at 6.4.
  16. Weeks didn't deserve an A because he struck out to much. This strikeout crap will not go away until the writers stop writing about it.
  17. That wasn't as bad as him playing Durham in almost every single game even though his body couldn't take it.
  18. I believe this thread stating a day late is the sole reason our entire season is doomed.
  19. I wonder if Parra will get a SI article on his labrum.
  20. Hockey starts tonight. Time to change the phone background.
  21. It really depends on the return. Of course it does in any trade but Fielder should at least bring some nice comp pics. I don't want to trade him for a guy who will only be around a year or two. Unfortunately I think that is all he might bring back. Either that or a long term low ceiling guy.
  22. Minor nitpick, but if we don't sign the guy at #12 (check the revised/finalized draft order above), the Brewers will get the #13 pick in 2012. Oops. Good to know.
