  1. I think you would be wrong on most of those guys. They are not likely to bring enough back to make them worth trading except maybe Bush since he is gone at the end of the year anyway. Hoffman costs to much to move unless we pick up his contract.
  2. He may not be the big problem, but he is part of the problem. Like TLB mentioned though, the next guy is just as likely to be bad just in a different way.
  3. Should have gone with Sanskrit.
  4. I would push Bush or Narveson out since I believe the rest of this season is about setting up the franchise for the future, not the rest of this year. Who will they push out, I would guess Parra or Narveson.
  5. Bobby Cox has been ejected from something like 9,000 games, which is exactly the reason why the Atlanta Braves won those 14 consecutive division championships. I thought the first sentence was so ridiculous I didn't even bother reading further. They won because they had good players.
  6. Yeah that is what is depressing
  7. They would probably end up hiring Bob Brenly then we would all have to cheer for the Cubs.
  8. Yeah I am not going to be brewing lagers to start or maybe ever. I am not generally a fan of the style and I think they ferment between 35-55 degrees and ales between 65-75 degrees. Extract brewing to start and if that is good maybe never beyond extract brewing.
  9. Most of my friends would come over and we'd kill off the 5 gallons in a weekend or 2. Yeah 5 gallons of beer seems like a lot until you figure out is only slightly more than a couple cases. That would go pretty quick. SOME yeasts will give off nasty smells when fermenting, but I haven't experienced that yet using three way different kinds of yeast. Do they give off any odor at all and if so how strong? Sorry to be asking so many questions but I don't want to make the trip to a store to buy a kit until I know some things. Get the Northern Brewer catalog and salivate. Lots of good low gravity "session" beer kits to choose from in there. I have been drooling over their website for over a week now. They have pdf files for every kit which I have been reading to get some idea what I would be doing. I have also read a good portion of how to brew by John Palmer. If I can't talk my wife into letting me brew I may have to find a place that does brew on premises in Wisconsin. I read about them in Beer Advocate a few months back.
  10. Thanks for the information. I knew it would smell while boiling the wort. I was wondering how much it would smell while fermenting. If it is just a localized(one room) smell I may be able to convince my wife but if the whole apartment would smell like a keg party there is no way she would let me do it. That reinforces what I have been reading. I was looking at something easy to start and if it worked out I would go with a couple fermenters so I could do some of the ones that need to ferment for 1+ months and have more than one fermenting at a time. Like a porter or triple. That is getting a little ahead of myself though.
  11. Well that is certainly depressing.
  12. Right which is why those stats shouldn't be used at all except for trivia. By the time there are enough PA in a hitter vs pitcher matchup both are not the same players as they were when they first faced each other so the stats will never amount to anything more than bragging rights. Even if they are in a slump the only time a guy should bunt is if the defense is not expecting it and they think they can get a hit. His comment though was about sac bunting. In my opinion there is almost never a time when pitchers should be sac bunting. Only if it is close and late and by that time pitchers are usually pulled anyway so you will have a pinch hitter. Gomez just needs to stop bunting. I don't disagree with that at all. I just hate that he brought up pitcher vs hitter stats like it means anything.
  13. Parra gets hit harder than the average pitcher.
  14. Really Ken? You started out good then you lost me at the end there. 10-11 AB are a very, very minuscule sample. It is not predictive at all. Please stop saying things like this. Then there is this nugget. Sorry about that Kenneth. I am really hopeful the pitchers can improve at making outs for you. I almost forgot zim zam and poppycock. I hope he doesn't get flummoxed.
  15. We had Enigma, Cranbic and the Cherry Stout a few weeks back and didn't like any of them. The cherry was to strong in the stout. I could see how they would be appealing to people who like fruit beer but I am not one of those people. When this thread started I think I could count on both hands the non big brewery beers I had tasted(Miller, Bud, Pabst). Since then I have probably moved closer to 40+ at the least. I am finding it more and more difficult to find new and interesting beers. I think my next step is to home brew. Ever since my trip to New Glarus I have been bugging my wife to let me home brew. It may not happen anytime soon but I will eventually wear her down.
  16. How important is it to have a secondary fermenter? Does fermenting make your house smell like a brewery? I am trying to talk my wife into letting me homebrew but we have limited space and she doesn't want our place smelling like beer.
  17. Logan, I've already looked at him somewhat objectively. Some people choose to just shout, "MLE!! MLE!!!", but as we've seen with McGehee so far MLE's aren't exactly gospel. Nobody says they are gospel. They are just a best guess and in my opinion usually a little low. That said, Katin has some pretty ugly OBP's outside of this year if you even take only a little bit off for going up a level. That by itself is enough for me to question bringing him up. He's gotten his OBP up to over .380, he's athletic enough to have 10 total triples over 2008 and 2009 - only one less than Escobar over those two years - and he has a plus arm. These are just additional stats to support the argument. For half a season he has had a very good OBP. That is still a very small sample especially considering it is his third go around in AAA. It isn't like he is a 23 year old in his first year of AAA following up a good year in AA. It looks like he has been a full time player. All players typically hit worse as part time players. He would also be moving up a level. To think he would contribute much of anything this year seems really optimistic to me. Triples have more to do with outfielders misplaying balls than actual talent. Oveall I see a much stronger argument against him being successful than for. I don't think he would be better than either Edmonds or Gerut so as long as we have those 2 guys I really see no place for Katin.
  18. Don't we gain 2 if we win 3 of 4? Yup you are right. No idea what happened there. Must have thought 2 of 3 or something.
  19. So if the Cards win at a .500 pace we need to win at a .600 pace. I think the important thing to remember, other than this is a Fielder thread, is that we were only expected to be slightly above 80 wins this year or about a .500 team. Winning head to head games against the Cards means little unless we sweep a series. Even winning 3 of 4 in this upcoming series only gains us one game. There is a really nice thread about this nonFielder stuff over in the MLB forum.
  20. He doesn't need to. When we are still 6.5 games back I think most fans will realize we have no chance.
  21. Contract talks with Covey have started. Doesn't seem like much new information.
  22. Well it sounds like we are in a more of a buying mode if Mark A's interview in the booth is to be believed. I think I am going to be sick. Brian brought up the impact of the Sabathia deal. I hate to see parallels drawn between 2008 and this year. We were 4.5 back with a 44 - 37 record that year at this time. Right now we are 32 - 42 and 8.5 back. Not even close to the same situation. Buying this year would be incredibly stupid. I will withhold judgment until they actually start making moves but I really, really hope they don't waste resources chasing the 2% chance we could make the playoffs. It makes me sick that we could possibly end up like the Astros. Crappy MLB team and a depleted farm system because of making stupid trades to somehow make a miracle playoff appearance. We are a few years away from that yet luckily. I am just really tired of our manager and GM(provided we go into buying mode) making moves based on what is possible instead of what is probable.
  23. It makes almost no sense to judge a player on situational stats. You are basically finding stats that support your argument instead of looking at a player at least somewhat objectively.

  25. 7.5 games back is huge when you are behind Boston, New York and Tampa Bay.
