  1. I think there is probably about zero chance Gamel makes the MLB club unless there is an injury or I hope there is. I would hate to see Gamel up as a bench player. I agree he would be a really good fit as a #2 hitter. He should have a decent OBP and has some speed, not basestealing fast but taking an extra base fast.
  2. I went with Escobar in the 2-slot to help stay out of DP's ahead of Braun(don't know his DP stats, but I assume with his speed, he does ok) He actually does really poorly in double plays. He hit into more double plays than Kendall last year. He was 2nd on the AAA team in double plays hit into. Zaun 2nd wouldn't be to bad since he is likely to have a pretty decent OBP. Alternating Zaun and Hart in the 2 spot based on the handedness of the opposing pitcher might be a good idea.
  3. Add to that the fact that protection has been shown statistically not to exist(or at the very least to have minimal effect). It is one of the "baseball truths" that exist more in people's minds than in reality.
  4. Yes they did give him many offers to settle. Not in the middle though.
  5. I want Corey Hart to understand that all the other arbitration eligible players on this team settled very quickly and did not try to rob the organization of every penny the way he did. All the other players were offered a contract somewhere in the middle. Hart was apparently never offered in the middle.
  6. I think it is going to be more like $18-$20M. That money can be spent on locking up players like Gallardo. It would also buy a couple above average pitchers. It won't bring back a player like Fielder, but if we give it to Fielder we are counting on getting a lot from the farm. Yeah we have a lot of good potential pitching and player in the minors, but we can't count on getting a 3-4 starters, most of our position players and a good portion of the pen out of the minors.
  7. I've been away, so I'm sure this has been discussed already, but how good does the team's decision not to offer Lopez arby look now? About the same. Even though Lopez hasn't signed yet that doesn't mean he would have accepted arbitration. The fact that Lopez fired Boras makes me think Boras overvalues Lopez and would not have accepted arbitration. Boras only cares about money not a players welfare. Money and a players welfare lineup with elite players but if you are not an elite player you are better off with a different agent.
  8. If that's the case, we'd probably go into rebuild mode, as we'd lose his bat and the picks wouldn't help for years in the future. This is the stance that really bothers me. The notion that if/when Fielder leaves we are going to have to rebuild. This is the chicken little thing I referenced a couple pages back. There are positives to not paying Fielder a large sum of money. Not having Fielder gives us financial flexibility which protects us from prospects not developing. Trading him lessens the negative impact when he leaves. Maybe somebody else signs Fielder and we are able to swoop in and get Gonzales for less money than Fielder. Sure losing Fielder is going to hurt. Remember the Sexon trade. If we can get good players back, we can minimize the step back or even take a step forward without Fielder. Sure it sucks not being able to have franchise players. Only a handful of teams can do that. Even teams that can afford players don't always keep their own players. My only advice is not to get to attached to individual players. Either that or any one team.
  9. I hate it when goaltenders leave the crease with the other team in the zone. Bugs the crap out of me. Yeah, that was a whuppin.
  10. Hopefully they don't do anything stupid that would earn a suspension for next weekend.
  11. Didn't you know? Direct TV and Corey Hart hate puppies.
  12. This is going to be a really chippy game tonight.
  13. Last season was arguably his worst since becoming a fulltime player I would have argued that he improved in 2009 over his 2008 season. Now let's say you had a real bad year at your job, but despite that your boss offers you what most consider to be more than fair of an offer (despite your poor work). With you knowing full well how poorly you did at your job, would you think it is right for you to demand more? That analogy only works if your boss paid you 1/5 what you deserved for your first 3 years.
  14. Yeah I agree the Hoffman deal in particular was extremely inefficient. I sort of mentioned that a bit in the Jack Z thread. Closers are an area where I think teams can easily save money and flipping them for prospects is the way to go. Teams may be catching on to that if the Matt Capps deal is any indication. The difference between an elite closer and a solid reliever is pretty small in terms of games and huge in terms of price. For the team to be competitive during the end of a Fielder contract, if the salary is evenly distributed, the Brewers will need to have a cheap bullpen and won't be able to spend much on SP. I would rather have the flexability to sign starting pitching than lock up Fielder. We are counting on several pitching prospects who haven't even had success at the AA level making it if we tie up a large chunk of money in Fielder. I don't think there will be serious discussions about resigning Fielder until after arby numbers are exchanged next year. My guess is that he will be looking for and get around $15M or more next year. Any contract probably starts at 4 years(more likely 5) and $18M per year.
  15. Gallardo is going to start getting expensive next year and maybe Parra if he pitches well. Escobar will be getting more expensive before the end of a Fielder contract.
  16. Yes Parra's career numbers look bad but he had one good year and one really terrible year. His career ERA and WHIP are probably not a very good indicator of how good he is.
  17. There are 4 footprints in the lower right and I stepped from letter to letter. Nobody uses our yard much in the winter.
  18. It shows management that fans are frustrated watching him trotted out there just because of his contract even though his chances of success are slim at best. Like others have said about similar situations. Management knows fans are unhappy when players perform poorly. There really is no need to show displeasure by booing. Would teams continue to trot out bad players and teams even if fans didn't boo? Management either cares to win or they don't. Fans making noise like baboons makes little difference.
  19. Nothing good can come from more discussion of this tired topic.
  20. http://images.yuku.com/image/jpeg/f7f153628c2984cf93f074d28a06f6286aad839.jpg I did this for my neighbor who is a Yankees fan.
  21. A seven year deal is a big risk for any player at any age unless they take a team friendly contract like Braun. Even then there is quite a bit of risk assumed by the team.
  22. I would like the Big Ten to stick with midwest teams. Of course getting a team like Texas or a team in New York state would make the Big Ten a media powerhouse. Even bigger than they are now. That was something put forward by Homer on 100.5 this afternoon. I believe he mentioned Rutgers and Missouri. Think of the media markets we would be in with those 2 teams added.
  23. The rumors were that all the Brewers were offered for Hardy last offseason were relief pitchers.
  24. You just need one team that thinks Suppan is worth $42M when everybody else thinks he is worth $30M, I mean it only takes one team to think Fielder is their answer and go after him at any cost.
  25. I understand that but I get the feeling many people don't think we can field a good team without him. There is a whole chicken little thing going on. It's gonna suck when he leaves but by no means does it mean we can't filed a very good team.
