  1. How do we as fans connect with the team when we only get to enjoy to 2 or 3 best years of a player's career? I guess I don't get as attached to players as some people do because I really don't see players moving on as a problem. Not many players stick with their original team even on the big market teams.
  2. I agree. How do you know he isn't doing everything he can to get better?
  3. Replacement level is theoretically freely available talent yet there are only 6 teams that got a better than 5.50 ERA out of their 5th spot in the rotation.
  4. The average 32 worst starts per team come out to a 5.56 ERA on average in the NL and 6.47 in the AL. That is only using the 160 starts with the best ERA. Basically dropping 2 starts from the worst ERA pitcher on each team. WAR seems to work pretty well for position players, although I have never looked into it to deeply but for pitchers it seems like they are more likely to have value to a team even if they have a negative WAR. I guess my objection is using 5.50 ERA as a replacement player. I will have to look into FIP like I did ERA for starters.
  5. I also want to say how underwhelmed I was by New Glarus Cabin Fever Honey Bock. They made a blonde bock several years ago which I really enjoyed, but Cabin Fever was a disappointment. It reminded me of a mass produced lager. I was really unimpressed as well. I thought of Honey Weiss when I was drinking it. Probably the only New Glarus beer outside their Unplugged series I wouldn't drink. I just can't get into New Belgium. I don't know if they use some sort of common malt or yeast strain in all their beers, but man, all their beers taste the same to me. Trippel, 1554, Fat Tire, 2 Below...they all taste the same. They do all taste a little similar I guess. They are all pretty clear/filtered(at least the ones I have tasted) so maybe that is part of it. They might be stripping away some of the taste. They make solid but not really great beer.
  6. I don't think we will hit 3 million fans this year unless we are competing for a playoff spot well into August. The economy doesn't seem as optimistic as it did a yer ago.
  7. There are quite a few interesting links in this thread from just a week ago. The thread pertains mostly to signing Fielder. Link
  8. I have no problem with letting the manager make the decisions for a team over the course of the year, at least from an organizational standpoint. I think the GM has to step in on stuff that will effect a team long term though. Things like Gamel sitting the bench and acquiring service time.
  9. People keep talking about how Suppan hurt the team the last couple years, but he was still better than most of the fill ins we have had when pitchers have gotten hurt. Yeah the dollars were and are way to high, but he is still useful. Giving Sheets a long term deal would have been a bad idea, but at the time he would have gotten it, he didn't really have any injuries that would point to long term problems or decline in performance. Most of his injuries are unrelated and other than the shoulder and forearm injuries really shouldn't hurt his pitching long term. I hate to say it but he has been injury prone. He could still go on to have a very good career from this point forward with few or no injuries. At least nothing worse than an average pitcher. A lot of that probably depends on how he gets used or abused this year. If he tries to come back and pitch 200 innings in 2010, I think that would be a huge mistake.
  10. Asked about third base. Mentioned McGehee, Gamel and Counsell. Said you'd obviously like a young guy like Gamel to either get the job in the majors or send him back to the minors. Doesn't know if that will happen. Pretty disappointing to hear that. Holy crap Gamel not starting either in AAA or the Majoirs would be a bad idea of epic proportions. Doesn't konw if that will happen? I hope he isn't serious after talking about how they did Gamel such a disservice by not playing him or sending him down in 2009. Of course, I also feel that Gerut is probably our second best OF (all around), and he's the guy who is almost assured of no playing time, so maybe I'm letting that skew things. As I said, I like the pick-up of Edmonds, but I worry that Macha will turn it into a bad move, especially if Edmonds is able to hit a couple out of the park in the first week or so. Yeah I have to agree. This is good move that Macha can make bad really quickly. Our best outfield alignments would probably be Braun/Gerut/ Edmonds against righties and Braun/Gomez/Hart against lefties. I am a firm believer in not giving a manager sharp things to play with like young players who should be getting playing time(Gamel) and gritty veterans with little(Kendall) or no talent(Patterson).
  11. It has Gamel listed as the worst fielder in baseball. Fielder is the worst 1B in baseball not believing he'll keep up last years improvements. Gomez is one of the better CF in baseball but Escobar is basically league average. It also lists all of our C as negatives. Overall it looks like the Brewers have close to the worst defense in baseball and I don't believe that is really true. That is why the pitching projections seem a bit too high to me. I think they are underrating our catchers, but the rest seem reasonable. I don't think we are one of the worst teams on defense though. I think we will be average overall or a little better with the possibility of being very good. Braun and Hart are certainly possibilities to be at least average defenders although I count on them being below average.
  12. Edmonds shouldn't be playing CF for us at all. I have no problem with him coming in and being a platoon partner with Hart or a bench guy. Much more than that would be a very bad idea in my opinion. I would still prefer Gross.
  13. What are the problems with WAR for pitchers? I see some problem with how they set ERA for a replacement level pitcher(80% of average seems to low) but I really don't know if they even use that for calculating WAR.
  14. I was really hoping for Gross. Instead we get a 39-year old guy who hasn't played in a year. This kind of sucks. At least it isn't Corey Patterson I guess.
  15. Something like maybe a sore non-throwing shoulder messing up his mechanics. Not sure if that was the problem, but something really came unglued for Parra last year. He simply hasn't been as bad as he pitched last year for a while.
  16. Why does it upset people that a player would try to get all the money he can out of the team? I can understand being upset about Hart being paid $4M+ and could go either way on whether he is worth that. I really don't see the big deal about a player waiting until the last minute to sign. How much negotiating can really be done until figures are exchanged? I would think it in the best interest of both parties to be pretty vague about the numbers they are going to submit otherwise one side or the other could change their number closer to the middle to improve their chances of winning the hearing.
  17. I guess many people are also angry with Villanueva for taking a whole week to negotiate after numbers were exchanged as well. It's really not a big deal until it goes to arbitration.
  18. Figures were just exchanged a little over a week ago. We are still close to a week away from the earliest scheduled arbitration hearings. There is plenty of time for him to sign.
  19. Hopefully he doesn't end up getting traded to a division rival late in the year. Of course we will probably be out of contention by then and he will be worn down.
  20. Including offense I would prefer Gerut. Just on defense, no question Gomez. The best way to go may be some sort of platoon. Worst case scenario Gerut should get at least one start a week in CF. One thing Macha really needs to improve is getting his bench players at bats. I would have little problem sending Gomez down and paying him $1.15M. If he is kept down all year, he would still be short of 3 years service time. It would be kind of a crappy thing to do to the guy though. I am not sure he would e eligible for arbitration if he didn't play in the majors in 2010. He wouldn't have enough service time to qualify and wouldn't be a super 2 because you need at least 86 days in the previous season to qualify for that.
  21. Trade him for prospects and they could then sign Washburn. Why would a team do that if they could just sign Washburn instead? I know he wants to play for Milwaukee or Minnesota, apparently, but neither seem really interested in him right now.
  22. I should have said for us he was abysmal. -3.1 UZR or -41.8 UZR/150 for us in CF. I think he would be expected to give us a little worse defense than Cameron over a whole season. Still above average. He definitely isn't as good as Gomez defensively. I am not sure that his UZR's before 2008 are relevant after he had so much time off. After looking at his defense a little closer I think I would actually prefer him to Gomez in CF. So I was wrong about that. This actually makes the Hardy/Gomez trade even more confusing unless Gomez goes to AAA for a while.
  23. You need the uneven leagues unless you add 2 teams or play interleague all year.
  24. Our defense at each position according to UZR (negatives in parenthesis) 1B - 0.6 - equal 2B - 14.6 - worse even if Weeks step forward was for real, that was the best defense at 2B of any team in the majors 3B - (1.3) - maybe a slight improvement if McGehee is healthy I think he was about average in the minors SS - 5.5 - probably about the same, that is my assumption until Escobar shows he is an elite defender LF - (12.8) - ugh, hopefully Braun figures it out in LF, I am not hopeful CF - 6.4 - better as long as Gomez starts most of the games, Gerut in CF last year was abysmal RF - (3.9) - worse if Hart starts most of the games I still say equal or slightly worse. It all depends on where Weeks, Escobar and McGehee are. Also depends if Gomez will hit enough for Macha to leave him in the lineup. Hopefully he gets most of the starts even if he doesn't hit.
