  1. Gamel at 1B probably.
  2. We are going to need Gallardo, Wolf, Davis, Bush, Parra, Suppan, and Narveson all by the end of the season to start games for us. Only 2 teams used fewer than 9 pitchers to start games in 2009. The Rays(7) and the Braves(8). The majority of teams used between 9 and 12 starters because of trades, ineffectiveness and injury. The Padres used 15 different pitchers to start games in 2009.
  3. There was little or no problem with the offense last year. Also, we will be able to do more hit and runs. I cannot stress enough how much I dislike hit and runs. Making your batter swing weakly at a bad pitch just to protect a runner seems like a very, very bad idea. Also, you guys are acting like Gomez will hit 0 doubles. He is probably good for 25+ doubles, and factor in a good amount of steals. Nobody is saying that. What they are saying is that practically every single other regular player will get on base at a better rate than either Gomez or Escobar. This makes their speed mostly irrelevant. I think you are going to be severely disappointed if you expect people to be happy that the Brewers traded a lot of OBP and SLG for speed in 2010.
  4. I forgot Elliot was so recent.
  5. what were the Brewers missing last year? Pitching. Their offense was just fine.
  6. We would probably have a good idea if the game was actually on TV. I am not sure we have had a really good goaltender in Wisconsin for a while. I usually give credit for goals allowed to the defense.
  7. As for Gomez, his LD%, GB%, swings at pitches out of the zone, ISO, K% and B% all improved last year. This is a player showing growth even if it didn't come out in his slash stats. He pretty easily could be a 2 WAR player this season and with a little bit of a breakout he could reasonably reach 3 WAR. Many of those stats you mention are similar to what he did in 2007. I agree he could be a 2 WAR player pretty easily mostly because of his glove.
  8. I think the best way I can put it is this... I think DM is interested in doing whatever it takes to put the best MLB team together for a single season where as I'm concerned with building the most solid organization possible. Melvin's job is to balance both. If the Brewers suck really bad in any one year or over a couple years, he is out of a job.
  9. Until umpires can be fired or let go for being poor, their union is strong enough. As of right now, umpires are set with that job until they decide to retire.
  10. It does seem a little close but I think there are many times a guy who would score on a double might also score on a single.
  11. A .260/.340/.420/.760 line from a 2B is pretty decent if he can play at least average defense. If Weeks can consistently do that and we have a hole elsewhere that Lawrie could fill in it might be worthwhile to keep Weeks if he isn't expensive.
  12. I know many like myself were irritated with all the bad calls in the playoffs last year. They made 4 changes that I really like. Link ESPN Link - The new contract lats MLB put in more use of video replay without negotiating with the union first. - It also allows video to be used to evaluate umpires. - It looks like they can buy out aging and ineffective umpires. I wish that was a little stronger and let them outright fire them. Probably a pipe dream since we are dealing with a union here. - Umpires can now work consecutive World Series. Before a umpire couldn't work a World Series for 2 years after being in one. This was of course instituted this year but now it is in the contract.
  13. Shouldn't we get to sign at least one of our home grown guys to a legitimate market value long term deal? No I don't think we should. I think we should develop as good of a team as possible internally and sign guys to deals like Braun's deal if possible. If they don't want to take a deal like that, we let them go on the market or trade them and maintain payroll flexibility filling in with short term deals on undervalued guys like Cameron. Occasionally we will have to make a short term deal for above market money to fill a need.
  14. Shouldn't we get to sign at least one of our home grown guys to a legitimate market value long term deal? If not, I have to ask again...what was the point of all this build up? Even the vaunted Twins have re-signed Morneau and are trying to re-sign Mauer. Why can't Braun and Fielder be our two cornerstones for the next five or six years? If Fielder is willing to take a hometown discount sure sign him. Morneau's deal was for 6/$80M. No more than $14M in any year. If Fielder would sign that deal, sign him now. How likely is he to take a deal like that though? Neither of the two guys you mentioned the Twins signing are Boras clients. My guess is that Fielder will get close to $13M next year in arbitration and I believe that is on the low side. If Fielder is signed to a 4+ year deal he will still be around when other guys start to get expensive. Parra and Gallardo will be eligible for arbitration after this year. Yes a couple guys will be replaced by cheaper talent, but much like this offseason, we are not likely to have as much extra money as we think. I agree that we overpaid for Hoffman and I don't like the deal they signed him to after the 2009 season. The point is that we can get good players in Milwaukee even if we have to overpay a little for them. $20M isn't gong to buy just a couple average guys. You can get a couple good players for that.
  15. Both together don't have half the value of Fielder. I think you are overvaluing Fielder by quite a bit. Edit: or more likely knowing your hate for Cameron, way undervaluing Cameron.
  16. We still got both for less than $20M a year that some are suggesting we pay Fielder.
  17. We sure have paid a premium for talent like Cameron and Hoffman in the last few years.
  18. I think we have seen over the past couple years $10M can buy a pretty decent player.
  19. I would rather pay Prince than pay 2-3 average guys $3-5m a year to be league average when there are players in the farm system that can do just about as good for league minimum. Well sure Fielder for under $15M a year would probably be ok. How likely is he to take a deal like that though?
  20. Paying Prince probably means less payroll flexibility which is vital to a team with a mid-market salary like the Brewers. If we had solid options to surround Prince then paying him would make a lot of sense. As it is we will probably have question marks at 2-3 starting pitching spots and many positions around the diamond. If this was 2005, it would make a lot of sense to sign him long term.
  21. I don't think they can count on any of those arms in the minors until they prove something in AA. Some have, but we really don't have a stud at AA or above yet. They look like mostly 3-4 starters, which we need, but it would be nice to get a top of the rotation guy.
  22. Yes they will have Gomez for a few years, but they have options at CF so picking up Gomez doesn't seem like a good long term move to me.
  23. The trades and moves this offseason seem to have been made to improve us for 2010. None of them look like good moves for 2011 and beyond except maybe the Wolf signing.
  24. Was Salome not invited to spring training or was he just not mentioned by the front office? Seems odd that he wouldn't at least get an invite. I would think Salome and Lucroy are our future at catcher or at the very least big trading ships.
