  1. Yeah I agree with that. I think Salome(28 days service time) would need to stay down about a month and a half and Lucroy(no service time) just under a month. My guess is that they would just call up Salome unless he really stinks since he is already on the 40-man roster. As of right now anyway. A few spots on the 40-man should open up later in spring training. It takes 172 days of service time to collect a year and a season is generally 183 days long.
  2. I am not as concerned with how it looks as whether or not the 1B will stay on base for groundballs hit to the SS.
  3. His choice I guess, but your kids are only born once.
  4. Rotation Wolf Gallardo Davis Bush Parra Starters Weeks Hart/Zaun Braun Fielder McGehee Zaun/Hart Gomez Escobar Bullpen Hoffman Hawkins Coffey Stetter Narveson Suppan Vargas Bench Gerut(with at lest one start a week in CF) Edmonds Counsell Treanor Inglett The only thing that would really upset me is if Salome, Lucroy, or Gamel make the MLB team as a backup. I would hate to see those guys wasting service time as backups. I the case of the catchers we could bring them up after a couple months and not miss out on much mentoring from Zaun while gaining a year in 2016 where both are likely to be much better. McGehee could very easily play himself out of a job within a couple months or repeat last year's numbers. I am still not convinced his 2009 is what we should expect. I think they keep Suppan around at least until mid-season to see how their minor league guys do.
  5. Our old deal was through 2012. We just reupped last year for a better "long term deal." Whatever that means. Longer than 2012, but shorter than eternity. Link 1 Link 2
  6. They dropped the team salary by almost $8M in 2009. Courtesy of Cot's Contracts. * 2009: $201,449,189 * 2008: $209,081,577 * 2007: $189,639,045 * 2006: $194,663,079 * 2005: $208,306,817 * 2004: $184,193,950 * 2003: $152,749,814 * 2002: $125,928,583 * 2001: $112,287,143 * 2000: $107,588,459
  7. Definitely a shot to the head though. I don't think he even got a penalty. It may have been a legal hit. Still pretty cheap in my opinion.
  8. This information would probably go with any number of threads but There is a interesting quote from Attanasio in the JS. Pretty scary how much we rely on good attendance. We would be completely boned without revenue sharing. The worst part is the Yankees are getting smarter and actually spending less money so that $30M isn't likely to go up to much in the future and might even go down. I am not sure if it is still the case, but at one point paying for a new stadium gave a team a deduction form revenue sharing.
  9. Home split. Kind of disappointing, but better than being swept.
  10. and he has proceeded to trade away minor leaguers on a yearly basis for a marginal gain in wins on the off hand chance that they may miraculously make the playoffs like they did in 2005.
  11. The only real difference with the Yankees is that they have been able to retain their franchise guys while signing a couple of those guys from other teams.
  12. By mid-season we should have a better idea of where our AAA and AA guys are. Right now Suppan looks like he will be needed for depth. If he somehow ends up in the rotation with no injuries to other guys I will be very disappointed with Macha. Not really shocked however.
  13. Awesome news. Should keep us out of the cellar for at least a couple years even if we suddenly suck.
  14. I never leave, much to the dismay of other posters.
  15. In Gamel's defense his fiance(?) was pregnant and due any day last spring. Now showing up late because he overslept, not cool.
  16. I wouldn't have a problem with Macha moving Escobar up the order after a couple months if he is hitting well because of how Escobar hit last year in the majors and his minor league numbers. If he doesn't hit well, move him back down.
  17. Try this.
  18. Hitting ninth would be like being the leadoff hitter without the 144 extra at bats. Macha said he would make the linup like this if he did it today. We'll see how it ends up at the end of spring training. Link 1. Rickie Weeks, 2B 2. Casey McGehee, 3B 3. Ryan Braun, LF 4. Prince Fielder, 1B 5. Corey Hart, RF 6. Gregg Zaun, C 7. Carlos Gomez, CF 8. Pitcher 9. Alcides Escobar, SS Then of course there is this quote. Ugh, if a guy is getting on at that rate they need to be much higher in the order.
  19. I get the feeling that people expected JJ to say "I sucked and should have been sent down months ago" and when he didn't anything other than that is just an excuse. He was asked a question and he answered with what he thought was the problem. He even said he didn't ask for more time off which I see as accepting some of the responsibility. He started out the year being a little unlucky and at some point things got to him and he didn't recover. He said it himself, 2 for 4 just wasn't good enough.
  20. If true that makes the original "sending him down because of production" even less believable. At the very least they had it in the back of their mind that they might try to gain an extra year of service time.
  21. Bill Hall never gave excuses like that. You mean the guy who had his agent ask for a trade when he got platooned? It depends on how you read it. When Hardy was sent down, Melvin may not have intended to keep him down long enough to lose the year of service time. But as you said, Hardy clearly didn't hit well enough to earn his way back quickly. I agree their original intention may not have been to gain a year of service time, but that is what the obviously decided to do at some point.
  22. Bush wasn't injured, he was hurt. He wasn't completely healed but he played through it and not very well. You are making the assumption that since he wasn't on the DL he was 100% healthy. We have seen in the past that even minor injuries can throw a pitcher just enough off that they become less effective. Bush doesn't have good enough stuff to be a little off and still be good. Sure he was healed enough not to make things worse, not well enough that he was really healthy though.
  23. Sorry Doug, that is impossible to believe when you leave a player down just long enough to get an extra year of service time. Yes JJ should have been sent down but he didn't exactly earn his way back.
  24. I actually agree with Haudricourt's take on it. Link
  25. I am not a big fan of our players participating in this either. Not a big fan of our players participating in winter leagues either except for hitters getting at bats they missed during the season. I really hate pitchers pitching in the offseason.
