  1. I think Macha did a fine job this year--he got some great work out of the bullpen and constructed a top-notch offense out of basically Braun and Fielder. and Cameron and McGehee and Lopez and Counsell. We've had average or really good production out of every position other than catcher and SS this year. Even Hart has been close to average this year.
  2. Except Lopez is a terrible defender at SS. I believe Lawrie is playing with the Canadian national team currently.
  3. Lawrie may be ready by 2011. He probably starts in AA in 2010. If he rakes there and in AAA to start 2011 it wouldn't be out of the question to see him in the majors by 2011.
  4. Only in very specific situations. Situations that don't come up very often. The difference is even smaller when you take out the at bats with hits or walks. Edit: Fielder has 42 PA with a guy on 3B and less than 2 outs.(I am assuming he leads the team in PA with a guy on 3B and less than 2 outs, if he doesn't he will be close) Unless you are talking about one guy who strikes out every single time vs a guy who flies out every single time, it will make very little difference over a whole year. A handful of runs over a whole year.
  5. I'd offer him arby and hope he doesn't accept. I really don't want him back, but wouldn't be devastated if he is. I still think he doesn't try hard all the time and I hate that in a player.
  6. It made sense, but I disagree. It still seems you care how outs are made and it really doesn't matter. All that matters in the end is how often outs are made and how hard you hit the ball. It may make players and fans feel better if a guy flies out 4 times in a game, but an 0 for 4 with 4 strikeouts is the same as an 0 for 4 with 4 flyouts except in some very specific circumstances which don't occur frequently.
  7. What makes you say McGehee has better plate discipline? Gamel has "struggled" to a .336 OBP this year and has a career .374 OBP in the minors. Do you have an aversion to strikeouts?
  8. We have players that are good base stealers. Not letting them steal all year probably made them a little rusty. Giving the guys 3 games to prove they can steal bases, not giving the bench players at-bats unless they perform, using player vs pitcher stats. It is like everything Macha does. He doesn't look at the big picture. He looks at a very small window and makes a under-informed decision. Either that or he makes a decision and picks out stats that support it.
  9. Sounds like Macha just won't let they guys run and hasn't except for one series this season.
  10. I honestly thought Macha would pitch Gallardo into the 120+ territory tonight.
  11. I have been concerned since the middle of June when there was talk about how well Castro was doing as pitching coach. Edit: Just to be clear the walks don't concern me because I think he will be bad going forward. I think they are more because he didn't pitch last year and may not have been ready to pitch as much as he has this year. The only concern is that they are at a rate much higher than in the past.
  12. If you want to see something ugly, check Escobar's splits vs RHP and LHP. Link
  13. D-Man should be easy to find for a little while longer. I couldn't even find any until almost a month after it was scheduled to come out. Even then, the previous seasonal was still on the shelf and I frequently had to ask to check in the back for D-Man.
  14. Escobar is hitting pretty poorly. His OPS is .644. He is barely out OPSing Kendall and his noodle bat.
  15. Earlier in the year we were in contention had Gamel on our roster and JJ was struggling. Why didn't Counsell start at SS to give Gamel a few starts at 3B? Now suddenly Macha wants to start Counsell at SS.
  16. Dwight and Jim need to be in conflict or playing off of each other for the show to work well in my opinion.
  17. .330 isn't to outlandish and McGehee may be able to maintain a BABIP in that range even with his lack of speed. A NL 3B usually has an OPS in the .776-.800 range and I think McGehee can be at least that good.
  18. We are sheepish because his previous best year at any level was a .776 OPS at AA in 2005. His next best was .774 in his 3rd year at AAA. The rest of his seasons are all .749 or lower with a career .741. He has exceeded that by 150 points of OPS. I won't rule out that he has matured, but I think predicting an OPS .850 or over would be very optimistic. He did have ok OBP's in the minors after his first year. Link
  19. McGehee has a higher than expected BABIP this year as well. It is currently reasonable, but his second half splits look more like what we should expect going forward than his first half.
  20. My problem is that instead of making up his mind what stats to look at to make a decision, Macha seems to make his decision on who to play then bring up some stat to support it.
  21. Nobody specific. I have watched enough of those 2 to feel they are not an improvement.
  22. I think next season we give a chance to Randolph or Sveum. If those are the choices other than Macha, we might as well hold onto Macha since we are paying him anyway.
  23. The guys is a winner Hi is a winner because he managed for good organizations. Macha was a "winner" before he came to Milwaukee. All this "winner" stuff is a function of the team, not the manager.
  24. Well that explains why Macha didn't know about Gamel's splits against LHP in the minors. Oh, wait.....
  25. No thanks. LaRussa is an insufferable, pompous, arrogant jerk.
