  1. That is awesome. Milwaukee has won more playoff games than Chicago and St. Louis combined in the last 3 years.

  3. Luis Vizcaino. Link
  4. Doug Eddings, Randy Marsh. Plenty of really bad umpires.
  5. Now wouldn't that be shocking. Hire him, don't hire him. It won't make much difference unless we get more pitching.
  6. When a CF misses a ball on the outside of their range it often will go for an extra base hit. The extra outs are worth quite a bit in CF.
  7. I tried something similar to this and came up with these approx ERA and innings per start stats for NL starters. #1 - 3.19/6.3 #2 - 3.77/6.1 #3 - 4.24/5.8 #4 - 4.73/5.7 #5 - 5.65/5.2 I used 32 starts per spot in the rotation. Instead of averaging the ERA I split the runs and innings then calculated ERA after adding up all the runs and innings.
  8. Thus why I think UZR is biased against left-fielders and biased towards CFs UZR basically measures how many plays a player makes compared to other players at their position. You either make more plays than average and are above average, make the same plays as the average player and are average or make fewer plays than the average fielder and are below average. If anything UZR makes left fielders look better than they actually are because the bar is so low for the average fielder.
  9. It's been awhile since I've seen the term, but I believe the acronym goes "There Is No Such Thing As a Pitching Prospect." (The underlying idea is that, given the injury potential at the position, it is dangerous to assume that a pitching prospect is as projectable or as "sure" a thing as a position prospect. Someone else can feel free to correct me on this.) Here is a link dealing with this. Basically pitchers and hitters are equal in the lower rounds, but at the top pitchers are 3 times more likely to fail. 10% for hitters vs 30% for pitchers. Looking farther into the article linked in that article, only 8% of top 10 pitching prospects became at least middle of the rotation starters.
  10. UZR doesn't really cover the biggest part of being a 1B. It only looks at the fielding aspect.
  11. 125 points of SLG barely offsets 50 points of OBP. One point of OBP is worth almost 2 points of SLG.
  12. He turns 27 next week, so next season is his year 27 season. Everyone talks about how Manny Parra is still "young" and has potential, but he's no younger than McGehee Parra missed portions of multiple years of the minors. McGehee played in AAA multiple years. That is why Parra is thought of as young and McGehee old. Plus McGehee is in competition for the 3B job with Gamel who is 23. Now people are panicking because he's having some minor cleanup surgery. I'm sure most of the same people were the ones panicking when Braun was having some slight injury issues for a couple games early this season. Look how that turned out. Nobody is panicking over McGehee having surgery. We knew he would since about May. Many people are worried he just had it cleaned up instead of fixed. McGehee's knee limited his effectiveness. How will next year be any better with his knee just cleaned up.
  13. Just another reason to trade the healthier, more athletic, younger, higher-ceiling Gamel! Oh, wait...No kidding. I can see how it would make a lot of sense from McGehee's standpoint to not get the full surgery done. He has a good chance at being on a big league roster as a starter somewhere next year(please not for us). I really hate that this came out as it will probably drive down his trade value.
  14. The only reason I might dislike this signing is if it comes out later that we couldn't afford Cameron because we signed Hoffman. Of the two, I would much rather have Cameron.
  15. He had the opportunity to have a "full" surgery that would have kept him out for most of next year, but he chose to just get it cleaned up. So this sounds like it will be an ongoing issue. Wonderful.

  17. His marijuana use doesn't worry me at all. I think our 40-man roster spots are going to be pretty filled this year. We had to leave off a couple guys this year that normally would have been on. Nobody was really traded to make more spots so I don't see how, barring a few trades, we will have enough room to keep guys who have to be added let alone adding a guy we don't need to. He looks to be more than 3 years out from the majors at this point with his lost time. At some point he will have to be left off the 40-man roster before he makes the majors, might as well be now when another team can't pick him up instead of developing him only to lose him in a few years to a team that can let him sit at the end of the pen.
  18. TLR, Lou Pinella, Joe Maddon, Ken Macha, etc
  19. I would say that Cameron has a pretty good chance to win this year. The only guy who was better than him this year was Colby Rasmus in CF and Cameron has won in the past so that should help him. He only needs to be one of the top 3 outfielders to win. I think he lacks enough flashy sports center plays so he might not win. I think he has a good chance though.
  20. I wouldn't be shocked to see Hoffman retained, Kendell resigned because Salome didn't tear up AAA, Cameron retained in CF because of Cain's season, Looper's option picked up, and i won't be surprised if Melvin doesn't find a good deal for Hardy, Hart, or McGehee and both Escobar and Gamel start the year in AAA. Essentially, I won't be surprised if we have largely the exact same team going into 2010 as we had in 2009. I wouldn't be surprised to see most of the same roster back either. I do think one of JJ/Escobar will be traded though. I don't think we will get a good return on either if they are traded. I think $8M is a bit much for a closer, but I agree that you take care of what you can when you can. The difference between Hoffman and the next best guy to relieve is probably minimal. This strengthens our pen overall by moving guys all down a notch. I don't see us signing a free agent pitcher. None of the free agents look that great so I don't see it as using money on the wrong need.
  21. Regarding managers, we saw last year that pickings were slim as far as experienced managers. To fire Macha and bring a hot rookie manager doesn't make much sense as the window is closing for the brewers and i don't want the new manager to waste a year learning. I would much rather have a new manager than a retread. Experience is way down the list of things to look for in a manager.
  22. I was looking at both AL and NL for all stats not just NL. The player that had the 19.2 UZR/150 was in the AL and really broke the curve as the next best guy was only at 11.2, which I would consider almost equal to 9. I should probably weight defense more. It still needs a little tweaking. Right now what I have may not be perfect, but it is standardized and can be reused year to year just plugging stats in. To be honest, I am not sure how to convert the rest of the stuff into runs. I know they do over at Fangraphs, but it is vs the league not a player at his position.
  23. I have Cameron as a B- right now honestly. His offense was a little above average for a CF. C for his OBP(weighted as 50% of his grade) B- for his SLG(weighted as 30% of his grade) C vs expectations(weighted as 20% of his grade) .804 OPS vs .795 expectation that averages out to a C+ he gets a +1 for defense which moves him to a B- I used UZR/150 for all defensive judgments. Cameron had a 9.0 and the leading CF had a 19.2. Being the league leader(or close) would have moved him up to a B.
  24. Well, Escobar ends up one at bat short of losing his rookie status. Luckily he got hit by a pitch or he probably would have had the minimum. Now he can play for Rookie of the Year next year.
