  1. Unless we know what Melvin was going to get for Hardy, there is no way to say that trading Hardy would have made us better without using hindsight. Considering Melvin said all he was getting offered for Hardy at the deadline was a reliever, I think there is a good chance Melvin didn't really get good offers for Hardy in the offseason.
  2. It's not really that they're up -- it's that they're up & not playing on a regular basis (or for Mat, at all). I hate Gamel and Escobar being up and not the regular starters. Unless Melvin intends to get rid of Macha, I don't think it would do any good to tell him how to manage or do anything publicly except support Macha's decisions. I think Melvin made a bad decision hiring Macha. Macha and Melvin may not agree on the evaluation of players. We will know by the start of next year. I did feel comfortable assuming it was just posturing... until Melvin's recent comments. Now I'm a bit concerned. We have seen repeatedly in the past that word and action are not the same with Melvin. I am willing to wait and see what happens.
  3. But the recent comments from Melvin that indicated he sees nothing wrong with wasting Gamel's & Escobar's service time really, really concern me. The time Gamel and Escobar spent in the majors this year really shouldn't impact their service time much if at all if both start the season in the majors next year. They both already had a month of service time from 2008 and they didn't acquire enough to effect their service time unless the plan is to leave them down another year. If that is the case then we now have to leave both down about half a year instead of just over a month. There would have been a huge benefit if we had been able to pick up a temp SS or 3B solution and gain an extra year for either. It seems like the intention was for both to start for the Brewers from the start of the 2010 season at the latest. The really troubling thing in my mind may be the hints of McGehee being preferred over Gamel at 3B next year. However, that could all be more posturing for a trade by Melvin.
  4. As of right now, this is just a down year. If we are bad again next year, that would be a trend and would give some credence to considering a new GM.
  5. We can't compete on the top tier guys and they are really the only ones wirth signing to multi year deals. When you go after the next tier you have a high probability ending up with a Suppan type guy.
  6. I won't argue against Counsell batting leadoff when he plays because he has the platoon advantage most of the time. I don't believe that he is somehow 150 points of OPS better because he is moved from #1 to #2 in the batting order.
  7. Fire Macha or don't fire him. It will make little difference as long as Melvin is hiring the guy. Macha was the lesser of 3 evils during the hiring process.
  8. You can't choose game context when a ball is hit to you.
  9. I just made a sandwich between his last 2 pitches. And opened and poured a new beer. Walking the bases loaded is just an awesome move. Edit: I don't typically root against players on the Brewers. Helms and Patterson now being the exceptions. I only root against Patterson hoping he will play so poorly we will not have to see him in a Brewers uniform after this year.
  10. First he puts Patterson in, then he takes him out just short of a sombrero. I think you are right, Macha's messing with us.
  11. Dry year. Stuff is probably a little behind in growth. Missed the asparagus completely this year.
  12. To be honest, I get the sense that most fans don't really care who the bobble head is of, just that it's being offered as a giveaway. You may be right. On the other hand I care. The only one I wanted this year was Braun. The other bobbles seemed weak. A GM bobble? Really? No thanks. Hoffman isn't really a Brewer in my eyes. Same with Suppan and Kendall. Besides, what have those players done for us except happen to be on the brewers at the right time. They were not exactly big contributors. I might have gone for the Bratwurst bobble, but I missed the rest of the collection except Chorizo cuz he's cool. Overall a pretty weak 2008 bobble lineup. I honestly would have rather had a Counsell bobble because he at least has a Wisconsin connection.
  13. That's saying something when you have Kendall on the roster.
  14. BrewCrewBall had a link to Patterson's Rotoworld biography with this quote. I chuckled at first. Then I thought about it and decided that I needed another beer.
  15. As Logan staes later in his post, it would be best to find Counsel a platoon partner and start them at SS to begin next season. Just for the record not my idea, but I like it. It makes a lot of sense since I believe trading Hardy would be one of the signs that we are planning on taking a small step back.
  16. How about "will Patterson have a golden sombrero tonight?"
  17. I guess this year's big question is can Corey Patterson put up a non-negative OPS+?
  18. I think I am going to be ill. and not in a good way.
  19. If that doesn't do the trick, I would take my chances with another alternative and assuming that is cheaper be able to use that money plus other resources to assist in acquiring a #2/#3 type starting pitcher. The problem is trying to acquire a #2/#3 starter will likely cost not just money, but years. That means you have to give up something not just next year but the next few years as well.
  20. I guess I can't get overly excited about a guy who doesn't walk and has never posted an OPS over .800. I wouldn't bet on Hardy putting up a .800+OPS again either. I think Hardy is the better hitter and player overall in the short term. Escobar is the more valuable player easily because of his 6 cost controlled years. I think the choice should be made depending on when you want to compete for a post season again. If you want to compete next year, trading Escobar for a pitcher and keeping Hardy would be the way to go. If you plan on having a down year next year, trade Hardy for a prospect that will be ready in a couple years. I like the idea of finding a journeyman SS to platoon with Counsell and let Escobar mature a bit. Is Escobar ready for the majors, maybe. His 2016 season is likely to be more valuable than his 2010 season though. Do the scouts say Escobar has elite defense right now or the potential to be a great defender? It seems to me the scouts always talk about potential and not what a player actually is right now. How could they really tell for sure unless they watch him daily?
  21. Was it a team wide green light or just certain players? I agree certain players should have a green light based on how well they have stolen bases in the past. It just seems like this year, they tried to steal bases early, had a few bad games and gave up trying. I hate the hit and run. It looks really stupid when you see Casey McGehee getting caught stealing. I can see trying a hit and run with a guy who has a decent chance to steal a base. I have no real basis for my feeling, but I feel Macha is to controlling of the running game. Of course it could be Yost was more controlling and Macha is letting the guys play. We were 108SB/38CS last year. 52SB/29CS this year. Our SB leader is Braun. He is a little over breaking even on SB(14/5). Next is Hart , again just a bit over breaking even(9/4). Our SB/CS rate is horrible.
