  1. I know that Macha was trying to set up the DP, but even with an extreme GB pitcher and a slow extreme GB hitter it is still a questionable move. I also believe that most other managers would do the same thing or worse yet, bring the infield in and pitch to Pierre. I was also groaning while imagining the lineup upside down and how all the people who got hits would be at the top of the lineup if it was flipped. I forget where I posted it, but I think putting one of our left handers next to Fielder in the lineup is kind of being rough on the other guy since the other team is almost assured to save their LOOGY for Fielder. It worked out tonight though. Hopefully Gamel will get some more playing time after tonight. He does have a sweet swing.
  2. I think I am going crazy because I could swear I saw Juan Pierre get an intentional walk in this game. I know there is no way any sane person would actually walk Pierre on purpose because he is such a crappy hitter though. Must be seeing things.
  3. I agree, Those splits, streaks, etc. are the RESULT of weaknesses, not the cause or explanation. You are not really agreeing with Russ at all here. Russ is saying those streaks are just random results and are not necessarily because of any weakness.
  4. At least Catalanatto doesn't have to follow Prince in the batting order. Batting next to Fielder as a left handed hitter probably means you get at least on at bat against the other teams LOOGY. I would split all lefties away from Prince.
  5. Regression to the mean would be approaching, but never reaching, his projection. What you are talking about is things "evening out."
  6. I still think there is something to Kendall being a smaller catcher so he doesn't wear down as much as the larger guys squatting all day.
  7. That isn't much of a stretch. That also doesn't make the other 2 bad. I think at worst, Gamel and Escobar will be average MLB players. We need those caliber of players to fill out a MLB roster.
  8. Which is why we need all of our top young talent in the minors to cheaply replace our current MLB players.
  9. It's one start. Even Suppan throws a shutout now and then.
  10. We really didn't have a good replacement when he was sent down either. I understand why he was brought back up so soon and my hope is that he performs really well or is sent back out when Buch returns. I am not really worried about him overpowering hitters, I want him to work on his control.
  11. I stick with my original lineup and substitution pattern with the disclaimer that I am ignoring lineup optimization because a manager just isn't going to optimize a lineup.
  12. Unlike many others I am not convinced McGehee is as good as he has been this year. In my opinion we will need Gamel before the end of the year when McGehee starts to hit like expected. I would have a hard time stomaching trading one of those guys let alone 2. Gamel, Escobar and Lawrie are probably at most 2-2 1/2 half years from playing on the MLB team for us. Gamel next year3B or OF. Escobar next year or the year after at the very latest baring a long term contract for Hardy. Lawrie at 2B mid 2011 or at the start of 2012 after Weeks is gone. That isn't even taking Fielder leaving into account(2012), which I think will be filled by Gamel with Green coming up to play 3B. We really need all of those guys to fill holes pretty soon. We have somewhat of a redundancy at C with Salome at AAA and Lucroy at AA, which is why I think one of them is the biggest we will part with. I have little doubt Halladay would instantly make us the favorites in the NL Central and a serious World Series contender. However, giving up any of those guys does serious damage to future years. Near future years. I know the Brewers traded their biggest prospect last year, but LaPorta was pretty redundant with Braun in LF and Hart coming off of a big year in 2007 in RF. We can also move almost any guy to 1B as a last resort.
  13. Mike Hunt really isn't a reporter. I think most of his stuff is editorial in nature. More written to sell newspapers or throw out off the wall opinions without much rational thought behind them. Putting out Gamel as a trade possibility just because we traded our best prospect last year is proof enough of that.
  14. I have to agree that bringing Parra back up at this point doesn't seem like a good idea. Sort of pointless to send him down to get confidence then bring him back up after one good start. I think the problem was the walks and he only had one game where he had good walk totals. Although he had good results overall, I don't think he fixed the problem.
  15. If we trade Roy we are in full rebuilding mode so Rolen could replace Gamel at third easily with gold glove defense. He is also hitting 325/386/480 in the AL East this year. I really don't see Rolen as a replacement for Gamel to be honest. We have Gamel for at worst(if we let him rot on the bench instead of sending him down) 5 years after this. Cheap, long term solutions are invaluable to us and is why Gamel, Escobar, and probably Lawrie are untouchable. The best prospect we are probably wiling to part with would be Salome. Maybe Parra if it brings back a top line starter we would have for a couple years. I would also hate to give up Parra because he is a long term solutino to a spot in the rotation as well.(4 years after this I believe)
  16. If Escobar has to be included then count me out unless JJ signs a long term deal, which I doubt happens.
  17. Indeed. Despite the lowish average, his OBP trails only Fielder, Braun, McGehee and Counsell. Obviously those last two guys are the ones standing in his way which makes it tough to get him in there.and his stats are dragged down considerably by his poor pinch hit performance this year.
  18. I think it would be more correct to say that some fans do not appreciate his behavior. I find it hard to believe that there are any fans who do not appreciate his on field contributions.
  19. I can't believe how many people on this board seem to have a sheer hatred of Braun seemingly boiling under their skins. How is not liking somebody's behavior "sheer hatred?"
  20. Weeks looked really good at the start of 2008 as well. Weeks was slightly below average last year and thinking of him as a slightly above average defensive player is probably the best bet. When looking at defense we need to look at more than just one year. Defense fluxuates a bit year to year. Hardy for example was a worse defender last year then in 2007 according to UZR/150 and better this year than last.(16.7, 8.5, 13.9)
  21. Planning on making a trip down to New Glarus on Friday. Does anybody have any helpful information on the brewery or the surrounding area? I would like to give Michelob a little credit for trying to make new "craft" type beers. I know they really are mostly interested in making money off of it, but still they are making an effort. They also did one really good thing on the label of their Hop Hound Amber Wheat. Pouring instructions.(pour out all but 1/2 inch, put bottle on table on it's side, roll gently, pour rest in glass is the short version) I have only come across this a couple of other times. Guinness Draught(leave in bottle, also had a serving temperature) and I think one of the Goose Island beers. Ideally it would be nice to see 2 things on a beer label, bottled date and pouring instructions including information on the proper type of glass and proper serving temperature. BTW, Hop Hound, not very hoppy or wheaty. I am not buying it again. Still better than the typical Bud or Miller stuff.
  22. That's all he's done to this point, and that appears to be most likely scenario again this season.Melvin has certainly focused on making the MLB club better with trades instead of stockpiling minor league talent, but let's be fair here. We have had very linted talent on the MLB club to trade for prospects.
  23. Unfortunately the time to get Branyan was in the off season when all he would cost is money. I think our 3B situation is solid with Gamel and McGehee right now.
  24. Currently, I care far less about the development of the precious Gamel than about the team doing whatever gives them the best chance to win (without giving away the future). If Gamel is the best choice to fill that spot on the roster then he should stay in the majors. If playing McGehee nearly every day at third base and Counsell at 2nd currently appears to give them the best chance to win, then that is what should be done. If Gamel isn't going to get a lot of playing time, we are better off using a slightly worse player on the roster since what he is doing isn't likely to have much impact either way. Look at it this way. Gamel has been exactly replacement level as a hitter so far. He seems to hit much better as a starter much like most players do. Unless he is going to start much of the time, I think it is safe to assume that he is going to be a replacement level hitter all year. If that is true, we lose maybe half a win at the very most by bringing up a guy to get 250 PA for the rest of the year even is that guy hits at what would be equal to a half win below replacement level for the rest of the year. If things stay as they are, I doubt that guy would be hard pressed to reach 150 PA. I am purposely ignoring defense because I think the guy replacing Gamel will probably bring equal or better defense. The impact this year of a worse player would be minimal given Gamel's current role. That isn't even taking into account the impact of Gamel in his prime(sending him down to gain a year of service time) vs a rookie or FA pickup which I think is huge given Gamel's ability.
  25. If we are not going to get a front line starter I feel we are paying extra to tread water. Seems like a waste of whatever we trade.
