  1. One thing to consider when buying an RC is where you plan to drive it. I bought and X-mod from Radio Shack. It was really cool and a lot of fun. The one problem was that I needed a very flat, clean surface to run it on like a big basement.(the X-mods get pretty fast with the motor upgrades) If it hit even a small pebble it would flip over. That is why I went with a Radline. I am not necessarily recommending a Radline. I know very little about RC cars. Just trying to help with my limited experience. I had a Subaru WRX X-mod. I did an all-wheel drive and motor upgrade. Like you said, they are cheap and if you don't enjoy yourself you haven't sunk much money into it. I just felt I didn't get as much enjoyment out of it as I could have. It had very little ground clearance. I would look on Ebay or Craigslist for a used truck/car...seriously. Then I would go to Hobbytown in Oshkosh. It is on the corner of 9th and Oregon and the people there are AMAZING to work with. The staff will help you with any mod to the vehicle that you could ever imagine. This is WAY cheaper than buying a new car/truck and you will get a LOT more gratification out of it. I wish I had done something like this actually. Any particular vehicles/brands you would reccomend? I am looking for something smaller with ground clearance, all wheel/4 wheel drive, and electric.
  2. Perhaps that's changed in recent years as the NL has some very good offensive ss now. I will look back at a few more years on Saturday when I get time unless somebody else looks. Looking at just 2008, it is more than just one position where the NL has much better hitting not just SS. Arranged in order of the defensive spectrum. Position - NL OPS-AL OPS C- equal SS - +44 2B - -3 CF - +14 3B - +8 RF - -22 LF - +37 1B - +45 DH - -58 P - +43 At 6 positions the NL has better players on average.(some are close enough to be considered equal) It only represents one year and is far from conclusive. I think it shows that AL managers are taking advantage of being able to put a defensive liability with a good bat in a position where he isn't as likely to hurt a team. The traditional NL "get them in the lineup" positions(1B, LF) get much better production than their AL counterparts. As far as the DH, the NL does use a form of it already; they just call it a pinch hitter. Last year Brewer pitchers made 365 plate appearances in 162 games. Giving 365 PA to a pitcher instead of even an average hitter is a drastic difference over the course of a season. Not sure of the exact numbers, but you would probably be looking at wins instead of just runs. In The Book they talked about optimizing lineups and the biggest gains were made by not letting your 2 worst pitchers ever hit. Piggybacking them with a long reliever.
  3. I think you should add Fangraphs to the valuable resources list.
  4. I know, I think there might be other ways to interpret it though. There is a small overall gain in offense with the DH. There is probably a small gain in defense as well that brings down the gains on offense. The difference between a pitcher and the worst regular player is still pretty dramatic.
  5. Smaller RC cars. Most come ready to run, but all can be upgraded. Probably more expensive than you are looking for though. I have one of the Radlines vehicles which I bought at Target for around $50. Not as good as the ones they sell on this site. Link
  6. That is my interpretation of the stats.
  7. Batting lines for 2008 AL .268/.336/.420/.756 NL .260/.331/.413/.744 While AL teams add a good hitter to the lineup as the DH they usually also swap out a good bat for a defensive specialist at another position. In many cases at SS. Link 2008 OPS Position/AL/NL 1/.312/.355 2/.715/.715 3/.793/.838 4/.749/.746 5/.768/.776 6/.694/.738 7/.766/.803 8/.746/.760 9/.810/.788 10/.774/.716 I think 10 refers to the DH and 11 pinch hitters.
  8. I don't think it would make it harder for the Brewers to compete. They could be putting Gamel or Nelson in the DH spot and be perfectly competitive at a cheap price. While cheaper right now, it uses uses up service time. Service time is invaluable to us. I don't really care one way or the other about the DH. One plus would be less bunting. I thought Zambrano would end up on the DL this year. I just thought it would be for an arm injury, not a hamstring pull.
  9. I think that Weeks is the one infielder we might be able to sign to a team friendly contract. On the other hand, if Lawrie can play a decent 2B, he should be ready about the same time Weeks hits free agency. Still, until Weeks starts walking again, his batting stats are going to look poor like they do now.
  10. A few thoughts about last night's game I don't like it when home plate umpires ring up guys on check swings without checking with the base umpires. Weeks did go around the time he did check though. He didn't seem to be calling the strike on the outside corner against right-handers. I thought DiFelice should have come back out for the 9th inning. I know things don't work that way though. No Manager would do that. Weeks has had better games than last night despite what BA says.
  11. Instead of blindly defending the metric, consider what I'm actually trying to say I made a mistake on how errors were figured into UZR. They are figured in though. You said which seemed to be saying that Gamel would show up as a bettter defender than he actually is because he has good range which would cover up his errors. I just disagree. UZR penalizes players less for errors on tough plays than errors on easy plays. I don't think it is a big flaw though. I think the bigger flaw is not accounting for the position of a defender at the start of a play.
  12. As long as the errors are figured back into the equation as a negative, I don't think that UZR is as bad as you seem to think. I also think you are ignoring the fact that many people look at a few different defensive stats for each player, not just UZR. When a few different defensive measures seem to agree where a player ranks it is probably safe to say that player is around that level of defense.
  13. I've always been of the opinion that the way metrics like UZR are calculated they measure defensive potential rather than the actual defensive result. I may be misunderstanding what you are trying to say, but I believe that UZR only gives credit for turning balls hit into outs. If no out is recorded, no credit is given.
  14. named after what a good portion of the state shoots at. and the rest of us inadvertently hit with our vehicles.
  15. Bush with another 7 inning start today. Of course if you check the MLB leaders he is at the top of the league in HBP. The Mad Plumber returns.
  16. Is Sunday really the best day for Major League Moment? Getaway days are the most likely days for regular players to get a day off even without injuries.
  17. Villanueva has been our best reliever over 1 1/2 of the last 2 years.(2008 and first half of 2007 until he wore out) He will be fine. I hope he is used in a multi-inning role more often though.
  18. It hardly mortgaged our future. You say that like we only had one prospect and his name was Matt LaPorta. Sure it would have been nice to get more than a rental in return. It hardly kills us though.
  19. They should be ok after a couple weeks into the season. Link
  20. A lot of beer that isn't "Wisconsin" beer is still brewed and bottled in Wisconsin. Same with "Import" beer. What happens is a brewery instead of brewing it and shipping it to Wisconsin will make a deal with a local brewery to brew their beer in the Wisconsin company's brewery and brew the Wisconsin brewery's beer in their brewery to cut down on shipping and distributing costs. I don't have any specific examples.
  21. At the very least you would expect the umpiring crew to get together and see if any of the other umpires had a better view and try to get tit right. Just like not checking with the base umpires on a check swing.
  22. Bush had an option as well. He had to clear options because it was 3 years after he had been added to a 25-man roster. Hardy would also have to clear waivers. Link Cots contracts: Transactions
  23. A little better than last year would put him in the .900 OPS range which is an elite hitter in MLB. That's not easily replaced.
  24. List of umpiring crews. Link Rules of interest. Link We currently have umpiring crew "L" working our games. Much better than crew "J" or "P".
  25. Is it likely that he rediscovered his swing in 6 games? Or is it just as likely that the shock of being sent in the minors, or just regression to the mean, was more likely for his improvement after that? I think it is likely his wrist finally healed a year after he hurt it. Just like was stated when he hurt his wrist.
