    So I'm spending some time there, learning the ropes, keeping my real thoughts inward because I've noticed the moderating over there is Hitler-esque and they seem to ban anyone and everyone who ruffles a single feather. Anyway, I took a gander at the "about us" page and ... yeah ... wow. I didn't know it was a bad thing to show respect for other people and their opinions. Darn those moderators for trying to keep things civil.

    Sorry to pick on you, but this sort of illustrates why it is bad to use counting stats instead of rate stats. Hart has maintained a higher OBP than Braun for most of the year. Some of that is BA, but Hart still has a higher BA/OBP split than Braun.

    That might be the result of only facing below average righties most of the time. I would be upset to see Shouse face righties in a close game unless it is one or two between a few lefties or to turn a switchy around to the bad side. Close games being the key as I have no problem with Shouse going out and saving the pen in a blowout. I don't think at this point we have seen Shouse used in situations he shouldn't be in.

    Manager Ned Yost has managed his starting rotation differently this season, electing to stick with the order rather than using certain pitchers every fifth day, no matter if it means skipping someone's turn. Personally I would prefer to just pitch our best 3 guys whenever their 5 days is up and skip the bottom 2 guys whenever they come up.(although beyond Sheets and Suppan I don't know where the rest really fit in) I can see some benefit to being able to extend a starter now and then whenever you know they have an extra day rest. If you can get a couple outs here and there from your starters those are outs you are not relying on getting from your worst relievers. Also, hopefully, allowing your best relievers more rest. The biggest question is how does a Sheets start compare to a McClung start? Does being able to extend Sheets now and then really add more than just starting him over McClung? If all our starters were equal or close to equal, I think more rest is a good idea. However, I don't think this is the case when comparing Sheets to McClung. I think it is safe to believe that Sheets will generally go deeper than McClung with a good chance of a complete game. I also think that there is a really good chance that there is between 2-3 runs difference in expected ERA. I would guess it mostly boils down to whether you think Sheets is in danger of wearing down and getting injured. I believe that we have 3 guys in our rotation who can go 200+ innings every year(Sheets, Suppan, Bush) without a big drop in performance. Edit: Prettified. Added link.     So we shouldn't do a trade because we are afraid that Sheets might get injured? I do think that one more quality starting pitcher may get us 2-3 more wins and that would definitely improve our chances of making the playoffs. I think we can still make the playoffs with our roster as it is right now. I do agree that we should trade LaPorta before Gamel. Gamel can play all of the positions that LaPorta can plus 3B, which in my opinion makes him much more valuable.

    Wouldn't it be better to look at all playoff teams since the post season seems to be pretty much a crapshoot. The Red Sox seem to value OBP.

    It is interesting to note that his metrics this year are better or almost the same as the metrics for Brian Roberts who seems to come up as a name we should trade for in almost every Weeks discussion this year. One of the reasons cited to get Roberts over Weeks almost always seems to be that he plays better defense than Weeks.

    The leadoff spot is actually a really good place to put a guy who gets on base without hitting as a BB, HBP and single have almost the same value.

    I think the multiple posts has been much better of late. There were a couple posters who seemed to be chronic back to back to back posters and I haven't seen them lately. I honestly start ignoring(with or without the Yuku tools) posters who post back to back often.

    Branyan has better career splits against RHP than Hall and better defense. I don't see much playing time in Hall's future unless there is another infield injury. Hall had a great chance to get people "back on his bandwagon" on Friday. One K later and his fate is pretty much sealed at this point.

    I would write-off today as Weeks just being a bit rusty. Over the whole season I don't think there is any way Weeks has a BA as low as it is now. He still has a really good split between his BA and OBP so when his BA comes up his OBP will look great.

    That's why I look at the makeup of the lineup first, before just going for the higher OBP guy, automatically. Just my 2 centavos... I wouldn't look at lineup position only because I think where you hit in a lineup is as dependant on the quality of the other players on the team as anything that you would do as a hitter. I think I understand what you are saying that you look for different things from different spots in the order.

    OPS is a really good stat, but if 2 players are close I would chose the player with the higher OBP. If Braun is around .350 OBP I would be pretty happy considering how high his SLG is. I would obviously prefer him to be around .400 like other elite hitters, but I am not sure he will get that high. He had a .370 OBP last year, but, like others, I thought we would see a dip in his BA and OBP for several reasons. I was hoping some of the dip would be offset by some improvement in plate discipline, but that has not been the case so far. Of course, he may be reading this board considering he has suddenly gotten a bunch of walks. I don't use runs created at all and don't know much about it, but from THT Runs Created. Invented by Bill James, RC is a very good measure of the number of runs a batter truly contributed to his team's offense. The basic formula for RC is OBP*TB, but it has evolved into over fourteen different versions. We use the most complicated version, which includes the impact of hitting well with runners in scoring position, and is adjusted for ballpark impact. RC/G refers to Runs Created Per Game, which Runs Created divided by the number of outs made by the batter, times 27.
