  1. I would prefer to see Riske working as the stopper instead of assigned an inning. I doubt that will happen though.
  2. I really think he has only had one real year to manage and that was last year. Other than that the focus was on developing talent. I do however think the Brewers need to either be sucessful or have a ton of injuries for Yost to keep his job. I am not really sure what successful means to Mark A. though. I guess I would say playoffs or 86+ wins without a last half colapse. Tough to set a benchmark really. Listen to the #7 interview(or lower) and way at the end Tom H. says something about Mark really wanting to win. Yost and Melvin need to have a pretty good season to keep their jobs I think. http://www.wtlx.com/content/podcasts
  3. I wasn't looking at the service time aspect of it, but that is a good idea as well. Like I stated, we more than likley would have to trade at least 2 players to make room for Parra and if we do that leaves us with only 5 decent starters in 2009. If we want Parra up this year I think it drastically impacts our rotation in 2009. In my opinion we are not a franchise that can ignore the future at the cost of the present.
  4. I remember Giambi refusing to go to the minors a few years back, but forget exactly why he was able to decline.
  5. Sorry to double post, but this thread should really be titled "why did it take so long for Estrada to get a job and why so cheap?" That is what I took the thread to mean.
  6. There was a reporter who umpired at least one spring training game last year. None of the players really noticed. How else do you do background checks without interviewing friends and family?
  7. He may hit .280 over his career, but his OBP is .320 but that may be inflated by a couple of his early years. he has a reputation as a poor defender he was dumped by a team that just traded for him can't stick with any team(not really his fault in most cases) reputation for being poor at handling a pitching staff There really are numerous reasons, but nothing really tangible other than the fact he can't take a walk. On a side note, does anybody ever recall Estrada being enthusiastic during an interview? He never seemed like he was happy to be in Milwaukee.
  8. Depends on when you next plan to be competitive. If we didn't plan on being competitive during Sheets' time with us it would have been a good idea to trade him during the 2004 offseason.(I know, injuries since) Much like trading Sexon. It doesn't pay to keep a player who will give you a marginally better record unless you are thinking he will give you the extra couple wins that get you into the playoffs. We planned to be good either last year or this coming year so it paid to keep Sheets. He isn't young any longer like the guys you talked about, but a few years back he was.
  9. The liver is evil, it must be punished.
  10. Drop Teddy Higuera and replace him with either Graeme Lloyd or Steve Sparks.
  11. Hank Aaron did play for the Brewers at the end of his career so I don't see how he can be left off.
  12. Sending Parra to the minors is looking past 2008. It isn't a given, but the odds we lose Sheets are pretty big. We would basically have to trade 2 of Vargas/Bush/Capuano to keep Parra in the majors. Looking past this year that would leave us with Suppan, Villanueva, Gallardo, Parra and one of Bush/Cappy/Vargas. Our pitching surplus this year quickly becomes a lack of pitching in 2009 if we move more than one of those guys. Unless we think Zack Jackson is who we want competing for a starting rotation spot.
  13. Is there still a 5 and 10 rule. If you have 5 years in the majors with one team and 10 years total you can decline an assignment to the minors.
  14. Other than being tasty you have to count the "this thing would eat me if given the chance" factor as well. Of course the same could be said about pigs.
  15. I think I finaly have my wife convinced that turkey is not really a reasonable substitute for beef,
  16. The gap isn't a myth and never will be as long as the AL has an average salary $25M higher than the NL. Even taking NYY and BOS out the gap is $10M per team.
  17. Wow, I didn't know Moss, Marbury, and Garnett played baseball. Learn something new every day.
