  1. I accept there will be down years as a small market team. That doesn't bother me, but I want to be either looking like a strong playoff team of having some hope for the future. It looks like a long drought coming up. Segura looks exciting. Other than that, what do we have to look forward to? Watching Braun's slow decline until we are are relevant franchise again?
  2. I know it bleeds over into other threads but what are your thoughts on the direction the franchise is going? Right now I think this quote best sums up my feelings. I have watched a total of maybe 2 games this year. Opening Day start to finish then parts of some games here and there. The winning and losing doesn't really bother me. I watched 150 plus games every year, start to finish up until the last few years. I am just frustrated with general direction of the franchise. The worst part is that my interest actually started to wane in 2011. The 2010-2011 offseason stood out letting me know what was really important to the decision makers. Pandering to the masses and boosting attendance. I don't even feel much inclined to even bother turning the channel to baseball.
  3. I think his expectations were a little to high.
  4. I stand by my statement. If they scored more runs they would win more games.
  5. Hitting coach has to go. If they scored more runs they would win more games.
  6. We are better than this, but not much. I say keep him. I don't like him as our manager but he seems like a good guy for a sucky team which we should be for a couple years. Fire him once we start putting a good team together.
  7. The anger and bitterness here has given me no desire to post any longer. I read, from time to time, and I'll chime in, on rare occasion, but the fact that debate and discussion and logic has all but ceased to exist makes bf.net a shell of what it was, even two years ago. A shell of it's former self is a good way to state it. There are so many shortsighted views instead of the larger/longer view than there used to be. I still visit mostly out of habit and hope to catch Brewers news faster than anywhere else.
  8. Maybe it's the team...or maybe it's the threads have turned into brewergripe.net. The lineup stinks, Ron stinks, Rickie stinks, Ax stinks, blah blah blah...They are definitely not anywhere near as interesting as they were a few years ago. You are right, they are a nightly vent thread dominated by a handful of posters. There used to be more statistical and analytical backing to all the posts on Brewerfan.net, even the game threads. Now, not so much.
  9. Congratulations. I would have a really really hard time being unemployed.
  10. If you don't think people opposed to this signing are looking beyond this season you are not really reading other people's post closely enough. The biggest reason this signing sucks is because of it's repercussions beyond this season. We will not be in a better place next year. I know you think we can trade some offense to get better but I think you are overvaluing our own players.
  11. I'll phrase my response a little differently. This is only one part of the equation. Bad starting pitching puts stress on other parts of the team, particularly the bullpen. While you can argue that the Brewers don't have a lot of young future stars in the bullpen to protect against burnout or injury, if an increased stress on the bullpen causes some of the relievers to get hurt then it puts the Brewers in a situation where they may have to call up the young guys before they are ready which may hurt their development or cause them to get hurt, which could hurt the franchise just as much if not more than losing a first round draft pick. You're right in the sense that the only difference it may have made in their record is that they may have lost the 4/17 game against the Giants instead of winning it. And if this were a year where the draft was deep and talented, especially in high-upside pitching, I might agree with you. But this is regarded as a weak draft class, and when the Brewers signed Lohse they had no idea Ramirez would get hurt and Weeks/Lucroy/Maldonado/Gonzalez and to an extent Peralta would be as bad as they were. Even if everything broke right we were still a bubble playoff team. The Cards and REds were just that much better than us. As far as worrying about stressing the younger arms, just don't do stupid things with them.
  12. That's really what this situation is starting to remind me of, too. Of course Bill Hall actually got benched at a certain point. Huge difference being Weeks has actually had success in more than a couple seasons.
  13. Lohse has been the best SP we have this season and can actually get past 6IP. I'd say Lohse is better than Gallardo, and by the end of this season he could very well be the best SP we have on the team, and established himself as our ace or co-ace, and you are honestly going to say it doesn't matter that we have him on our team? Not to mention should we lose him we'd have to find 2 more just like him instead of just 1 to field a competitive team with a depleted farm system. Lohse over this entire season will by that time have had such a positive chain reaction effect on our pitching staff that his 11 million would be well worth it and better than a 1st round pick that would have a 50% chance of working out, or more like a 40% chance knowing our inability to draft well lately, and develop. Top prospects can always be traded for, and lord knows we will have offense to trade. You really don't realize how much of a waste it is to sign guys who will not make the difference between missing and making the playoffs do you?
  14. I would trade Gomez either this year or next while his value is high. Schafer is a low cost replacement especially for a team that is unlikely to compete while Gomez is with the club.
  15. The Cardinals are operating on about $20m/year in payroll. Not a huge difference but enough to keep one more star player.
  16. I have had the forums bookmarked for several years. At first it was because of problems with the Brewerfan.net homepage. There were times when you could only access the forums if you had a bookmark that skipped the homepage. Now it;s because nothing is ever updated outside of the forums. It would be great to see new stuff on the homepage but at this point I think Brewerfan.net is a forum only.
  17. I think at this point it may be a good idea for Segura and his agent to wait till after the season. That has nothing to do with fair or unfair. Just letting Segura focus on the season and worry about it after the season is over.
  18. I would guess that if you are extremely deficient in one are or the other you are going to lose a lot of games. Probably be equally bad. If on the other hand you had a top of the league scoring team and average pitching vs league average offense and top of the league pitching, the team with better pitching would win more games. You can give up an infinite amount of runs but you only need to have one more run to win.
  19. I think the talent is around a .500 team. They are underachieving this year. Our starting rotation is nowhere near average. Nor is our bullpen. The bullpen probably isn't very good. The starting rotation is nowhere near as bad as they have performed. Talent ≠ results. In baseball you can do everything right and still get bad results especially over a month and a half time.
  20. I think the talent is around a .500 team. They are underachieving this year.
  21. and I think you need to explain who we can trade that will actually bring back decent pitching that will help in the next 2 years. None of the guys who could bring back anything decent are gong to be traded.(Braun, Segura, Gomez) Just not what Melvin does.
  22. The best starting pitcher on a non-playoff team. Signing him was a huge waste of resources. It doesn't pay to sign guys like him if we are going to be an average team. The only reason why we are an average team is because we don't have the starting pitching rotation that's good enough. We have what will likely be the top offense in the NL or baseball 2 seasons in a row. It's an elite offense. The fact that we have Lohse is the 1 reason why this team has a good shot at contending next year, and what little hope we have this year of contending. The Brewers can sacrifice some of their offense to improve there pitching to the point of being a contender. It's about time they do this. We knew we didn't have a good pitching team. There is very little chance that changes either next year or the year after. Lohse alone will not change that. That is why it was a waste to sign Lohse.
  23. Not at all. Right now he's the best starting pitcher we have on the team to this point in time. The best starting pitcher on a non-playoff team. Signing him was a huge waste of resources. It doesn't pay to sign guys like him if we are going to be an average team.
  24. Lohse is looking like a worse and worse move by the day. Unless he gets traded and brings something decent back, I think the signing is a huge fail.
  25. I cannot even fathom how that is possible. How can a scouting department not even put in 15-20 minutes of watching film of one of the best Japanese hitters? Crazy It's not true. Craig Counsell did video scouting on Aoki & signed off on his swing translating to MLB. I thought that was after they won the bid but before they signed him.
