  1. Final: Helena 15, Missoula (D Backs) 6 Osprey falls to Helena in front of record crowd Brewers win, 15-6; over 3600 fans attend on Fireworks Night Missoula Osprey Link MISSOULA, MONT - Before the fireworks show, the Missoula Osprey were hoping to light up the scoreboard in their series finale with the Helena Brewers on Thursday at Ogren Park Allegiance Field. Instead, it was the Helena Brewers who scored runs in bunches, and rolled to a 15-6 win in front of a record crowd. The big story of the night was the fans. The Osprey set a new single-game franchise attendance record, as 3,678 fans entered the gates. The old record, of 3,409 fans, was set exactly one year prior, on July 3, 2007. Helena (9-8) pushed themselves further into the race for the North Division First-Half title by scoring five runs in the first and four more runs in the second, taking what would be an insurmountable 9-0 lead. Helena would score twice in the fourth, three more times in the seventh and added a run in the ninth. The Osprey managed to get on the board in the third, on a RBI single by Alberto Diaz and a throwing error. Bobby Stone added a three-run home run for Missoula (4-13), while Isaias Ascencio added a run-scoring groundout in the ninth. The Osprey had just seven hits against three Helena pitchers. Kyle Green had two of them, a single and a double, while Jorge Corniel, Victor Estevez and Ryne White added singles. Helena Box Score Helena Game Log
  2. Final: West Virginia 3, Hagerstown (DC) 2 POWER EDGE SUNS Link A pair of two out hits from Eric Fryer and Eric Farris along with great pitching from Dan Merklinger and Rob Bryson produced a 3-2 victory for the West Virginia Power over the Hagerstown Suns on Thursday night at Appalachian Power Park. Anderson De La Rosa started the bottom of the third inning with his first homerun of the season to give the Power an early edge. The Suns tied the game a half inning later on Sean Rooney's RBI single. West Virginia wasted no time taking the lead back in the bottom of the fourth. Steffan Wilson walked on six pitches with two outs and got to second base on a passed ball before Fryer drove him home with his first of two singles on the night. The Power added an insurance run in the fifth inning when Farris's base hit scored Matt Cline to make it a 3-1 Power lead. The Suns scored their final run on Tim Pahuta's RBI double in the eighth. Merklinger (3-5) delivered his finest outing of the season in a winning effort. He stuck out a season high nine betters and allowed just a run on four hits over six innings. Rob Bryson (5) fanned four in three innings and allowed just an unearned run on one hit to get the save. Brad Meyers (4-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on six hits over six innings. The Power improved to 42-41 on the year and 10-4 in the second half with the win. The Suns fell to 42-41 on the year and 8-6 in the second half with the loss. West Virginia has now won six in a row, their longest winning streak of the season. Fryer paced the Power with a 3-for-3 performance and was the only Power player with a multi-hit game. Caleb Gindl doubled in the eighth inning to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Former Charleston Wheeler Pokey Reese was the starting second baseman for the Suns and went 0-for-4 with a run. The Power will continue the four game series against the Hagerstown Suns at Appalachian Power Park on Friday afternoon. Left hander Evan Frederickson (0-0, 0.00) will get the start for the Power and the Suns will counter with right hander Erik Arnesen (6-2, 4.22). The first pitch is scheduled for 4:05 PM. 4. Final: Huntsville 4, Tennessee (Cubs) 0 Stars Return Home After Breaking Even on Road By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars LInk Nic Ungs threw seven shutout innings and received home run support from Matt LaPorta and Cole Gillespie in Huntsville's 4-0 win over Tennessee in the last of a four-game set at Smokies Park. The Stars split the series and split their 10-game road trip to return home at 8-8 in the second half and three games behind the North Division leading Smokies, who are 11-5. The Stars completed their sixth shutout win of the season. Mat Gamel led off the fourth inning with a single to extend his hitting streak to 14 games and then came into score when LaPorta ended a 46 at-bat home run drought with his league-leading 20th long ball of the season. LaPorta's last home run had come in the next to last game of the first half at Jacksonville on June 14. LaPorta drew a walk with two out in the sixth and scored when Gillespie followed with a monstrous home run, his 11th of the year, off the top of the scoreboard in left-center field. It was his second long ball on the trip and second since May 28 at Mobile. Alex Maestri was taken out after six innings in his second double-A start, giving up four runs on six hits, while walking two and striking out five. He suffered the loss and fell to 0-1. Ungs did not allow his first hit until Matt Craig's two-out single in the fourth and allowed only pinch-hitter Matt Matulia in the sixth to advance as far as third base. He left after retiring the side in order in the seventh, having thrown 78 pitches and recording 13 ground ball outs. Ungs earned his first win with the Stars and his first since his initial start of the year for triple-A Nashville on April 6. Jason Shiell took over and threw a scoreless eighth inning before yielding singles to Nate Spears and Tyler Colvin to open the ninth. The veteran right-hander struck out Matt Craig before catcher Martin Maldonado, in his first double-A game, picked off Colvin at first base for the second out. Doug Deeds drew a walk but Jake Fox lined out to center field to end the game. The Stars return home Friday night to open a four-game series against Birmingham with left-hander Troy Cate taking the hill for Huntsville against Barons' right-hander Justin Cassel. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 pm central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com and www.730ump.com. 5. Final: Memphis (Cards) 5, Nashville 1 Sounds Drop Road Trip Finale In Memphis, 5-1 Date Posted: 7/3/2008 Link MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds posted a 5-1 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Thursday evening at AutoZone Park in the last of 16 meetings between the division rivals this season. With the loss, Nashville (34-53) settled for a series split with the Redbirds as well as a 4-4 mark on the road trip. Nashville took a 1-0 lead with its only run of the evening in the top of the second inning. Brad Nelson (3-for-4) led off with a single, moved to second on a Clayton Mortensen wild pitch, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on Adam Heether's sacrifice fly to left. Memphis evened the contest in the home half of the frame when Shane Robinson plated Josh Phelps with a two-out RBI single off Sounds starter Lindsay Gulin. Neither team scored again until the seventh when Phelps greeted Sounds reliever Derrick Turnbow with a double to center and later gave Memphis a 2-1 lead when he scored on Bryan Anderson's two-out RBI single to center. The Redbirds added three insurance runs in the eighth against rehabbing Sounds lefty Randy Choate. Phelps continued his strong night with a two-run triple to center, his first three-bagger of the year, before plating the game's final run on a Nick Stavinoha single. Gulin took a no-decision for Nashville but lowered his ERA to 3.02 on the year with a quality start. The All-Star southpaw allowed one run on three hits over six innings of work. Mortensen (4-1) picked up the win for Memphis with a quality start of his own, holding the Sounds to one run on six hits over seven innings. Mark Worrell worked the final two frames in scoreless fashion to notch his third save of the year for the Redbirds. Turnbow (1-2) took the loss after surrendering the go-ahead run in his lone frame of action for the Sounds. Nashville outfielder Brendan Katin singled in the top of the sixth inning to extend his longest hit streak of the year to eight games, the longest active on the club. The Sounds begin a brief three-game Independence Day weekend homestand on Friday evening with the 7 p.m. series opener against Round Rock (AAA-Astros). Left-hander Chris Narveson (2-10, 5.84) will take the mound for Nashville to face Express right-hander Chad Reineke (4-8, 5.15). Nashville Box Score Nashville Game Log
  6. in 1989 Andre Dawson was an allstar with a .307 obp, in 91 he was an allstar with a .302 obp
  7. what qualities does Brantley have that make him a better leadoff option than Green?...they have basically identical walk rates and high average.. brantley has more speed...but he's not going to be a base stealer in the majors...maybe 15 steals a year.. i like both guys, but when OBP is basically identical, take the guy with the higher slugging... green could replace rickie weeks in the lineup at 2b in 2010...on the field and at the plate..
  8. Final (Completion of Game 1): BC 9, Jupiter (Marlins) 5 This game was the completion of yesterday's game---naturally, the regularly scheduled game did not get played. Brevard County Box Score Lucroy is having a truly awesome first month in BC. Im getting to the point where I'm not so sure that he's not the best catching prospect in the system. All things equal, take the guy that projects the best as a catcher. Lorenzo Cain deserves to be in Huntsville. Brevard County Game Log
  9. Final: Tennessee (Cubs) 6, Huntsville 5 Smokies Rally From Early Deficit for Comeback Win By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars Link Doug Deeds' two-run walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom half of the ninth inning lifted Tennessee to a dramatic 6-5 comeback win over Huntsville Wednesday night in the third of a four-game set at Smokies Park. The Smokies won their second straight to lift their second half record to a league-best 11-4, while the Stars slipped to 7-8 in the half and 48-37 overall. It was the Stars' fourth walk-off loss of the year. Juan Sandoval, who had entered the ninth inning having thrown 13 1/3 straight shutout frames retired the first two hitters before Matt Craig singled to left and was lifted for a pinch-runner. Deeds took a first pitch strike and then launched a long, high home run onto the grassy berm area in right field for his fourth hit of the night and seventh long ball. It was the second time Sandoval has surrendered a walk-off home run on the road this season. Alcides Escobar led off the seventh with an infield single, moved to second base on an Angel Salome ground out and scored on a Matt LaPorta single with two outs to give the Stars the lead back at 5-4. Steve Bray gave up one-out singles to Deeds and Nate Spears in the bottom of the inning but got Mark Reed to ground into an inning-ending double play to keep the visitors on top. Freddy Parejo started the game with a single, moved to second base on an Escobar sacrifice bunt and scored on a two-out single by Salome, who has driven in a run in eight of his last 12 games. Chris Errecart's lead off home run in the second, his second of the season against Donnie Veal, pushed the Huntsville lead to 2-0. Parejo and Escobar kept the inning going with singles and scored on a double by Mat Gamel that made it 4-0 Stars. Veal then settled down and blanked the Stars over the next three frames on one hit and departed allowing nine hits, walking one and not recording a strikeout. Veal had lost each of his five prior starts against Huntsville, dating back to last season. The Smokies scored an unearned run in the second inning and crept to within 4-3 with a pair of runs in the fifth against Donovan Hand on a run-scoring triple by Matt Camp, who then came in on a scoring fly ball to shallow right field by Tyler Colvin, the current hitter of the week in the league. Hand was lifted after five frames, allowing two earned runs on six hits, while walking four and fanning one. The Huntsville-area native is still searching for his first win after eight appearances, including seven starts. Bray took over in the sixth and gave up a two-out single to Camp that plated Reed, who had singled to start the inning, with the tying run. Bray gave up a run on four hits over his two innings and was followed by David Johnson, who set down the side in order in the eighth. The series wraps up on Thursday night with right-hander Nic Ungs taking the hill for Huntsville against Smokies' right-hander Alex Maestri. Coverage of the game begins at 6:00 pm central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com and www.730ump.com. 10. Final: Memphis (St. Louis) 3, Nashville 2 Redbirds Stage Late Rally To Defeat Sounds Date Posted: 7/2/2008 Link MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds plated a pair of runs in the seventh inning to register a 3-2 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Wednesday evening at AutoZone Park. Seven Memphis hurlers held the Sounds to a season-low four hits on the evening. The Sounds grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Hernan Iribarren doubled with one out to chase rehabbing Memphis starter Anthony Reyes from the contest. Two batters later, Vinny Rottino ripped a two-out RBI single off Hugo Castellanos to plate the game's first run. Brendan Katin added a run-scoring double later in the frame, which extended the outfielder's season-best hitting streak to seven games. Memphis got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Sounds starter Mark DiFelice hit Rico Washington with a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs. DiFelice allowed one run on three hits over five innings in his first start since returning to the Sounds and took a no-decision. The Redbirds rallied to grab the lead in the seventh against Nashville reliever Ben Howard. Jarrett Hoffpauir led off with a double and scored the tying run two batters later on a Washington RBI single. Joe Mather gave the home team a 3-2 advantage later in the frame with a two-out RBI single to left that plated Washington. Mark Worrell retired the Sounds in order in the eighth before Kelvin Jimenez worked a 1-2-3 ninth to notch his sixth save of the year for the Redbirds. Memphis reliever Ron Flores (2-3) worked a scoreless inning to earn the victory, while Howard (2-4) took the loss for the Sounds after giving up two runs in his 1 1/3 frames of action. The teams wrap up the series with a 7:05 p.m. finale on Thursday evening. Left-hander Lindsay Gulin (4-4, 3.15) will make the start for Nashville. Memphis will counter with right-hander Clayton Mortensen (2-1, 3.42). Nashville Box Score Mark Difelice unleashes just his second walk of the entire season in the majors or minors Nashville Game Log
  11. Final: Helena 11, Missoula (D Backs) 10 Mass should get some news articles in the morning Helena Box Score Cutter Dykstra's 0-5 lowers his average about 50 points...which goes to remind that it's really way to early to try and derive any thing from the stats these guys are throwing out Helena Game Log You should probably avert your eyes from the bottom of the 4th here..
  12. they'll both have big league careers... i'd take nelson as well, just because he seems to have become a better hitter through his struggles...Errecart would be big news or some teams though
  13. im no scout...and i could easily be off on both gillespie and brantley...but my observations match up with baseball america's...they said Brantley "often gets bad breaks on balls and has a below average arm"...in this yearrs handbook.. so i was maybe generous with him..
  14. Brantley's arm is weaker than all the players that surround him...lorenzo cain, stephen chapman, cole gillespie, darren ford, and matt laporta all have better throwing arms than brantley...which is not to say his is bad, i'd just say he's right around average...i personally thought michael was slow when i saw him in WV in 2006...but that prognosis seems to have changed...i can't imagine he's got much more than slightly above average speed.. perhaps the hardest part in gauging his defense is that it's almost impossible to catch him actually playing in CF...in the 5-7 times i saw him play the field in WV, he never played CF...when I saw him in AA he was the DH...i think the fact that he hasn't played there much causes all of this conjecture... it's a whole lot easier to priase or flame Gamel and Escobar's defense because they actually play the positions in question...Brantley just hasn't played that much CF...which is part of why this argument continues... the only person who has ever really praised Brantley's defense is his agent... it would be awesome if we culd get a full scouting report from Sickels...i suggest you email him..for everyone's sake..
  15. To me, Green has the clear advantage: His .822 OPS in the FSL with 9 homers and 39 walks versus 39 k's is incredibly good. When you look at his season versus Mat Gamel's last year, it gives you afair idea why i think so. Now I don't think Taylor's going to hit .380 next year at Huntsville, but i think his .327 average last year in WV was a true representation of his hitting ability. He, unlike all the other guys who played well in WV over the last two years, is playing very well in BC---another indication that his stats in WV were indicative of talent overall, versus talent against the competition...Taylor still profiles as a guy who could hit .320 with 25 homers in the majors with a .400 OBP. Brantley, who is about a year younger than Green is having a great year in in Huntsville, but he still isn't showing above average power...his ISoP is .88...very low for an everyday player, and while he has the tools to play CF the Brewers have willingly started players over him there a large number of times. I think this comes off like i'm calling Brantley a lesser prospect...I'm not. Personally, I like him a lot. I just think this entire argument is based on the idea that Brantley has a skill (OBP) that Green doesn't have (actually, green's walk rate is slightly better than Brantley's) and that Brantley's age makes and level of play maks up for the fact the green is a more accomplished fielder and has twice the power.. two final comments....Green's career average is only at .293 because he was injured during his rookie ball campaign in 2006...and i think people are giving Huntsville more stock over BC than they should be here...I can't think of a single prospect who hit better in BC than they have in Huntsville...I always viewed the fact that the Brewers skipped Brantley over BC as recognition that he could handle the higher pitching, but also that they were conceding that he would struggle in BC
  16. Supposedly Columbus, Ga will be needing a new affiliate...thought this could be the end of the line down her...even with a nice facility, the lack of fans good end it this season..
  17. of course, seeing him play can have an affect on things...
  18. How about Lucroy+ Periard+ Gillespie for Sabathia and Gamel+Pena for Greinke hell of a pitching staff we'd have ...and with nowhere for any of those guys to play, assuming gamel just cant stick at 3b...we've done well
  19. Fryer was certainly in consideration...and he will probably be on there in July...he's really on;y beeen super hot over the last 2 weeks, so his stats were not eye popping until very recently
  20. i think hardy is being overrated and underrated at the same time...the first half of last year was above hardy's head...other than that, he's been exactly what should have been expected...a steady major league starter with 15 home run power who doesn't walk much and plays good defense..
  21. what about: Gamel Salome Jeffress A ball pitcher for Alex Gordon Zach Greinke we give up a bunch but we get back the pitcher we want and a 3b that has every bit as much potential as gamel.. regardless, those are the three of our top prospects i feel the best giving up...trading away escobar might be a good idea as well...still don't think he's going to be more than an average hitter in the majors..
  22. The Atl loves the local boy even if they did lose the CWS... the Atlanta Braves Select SS from Westminster HS: Gordon Beckham
  23. i got ya...wasn't trying to insinuate anything about unions...just that i didn't think it was weird that the teams paid for the uni's and whatnot...im surprised the players pay for anything
  24. 'Ehh, could've gone by yourself...that's what I did when I hit up Joe Davis. Oh well." I've been before and i saw the stars play earlier this year as well in montgomery...also saw the entire roster in WV and BC the last couple years... would have liked to been there, but not a big stress that i wasn't...
  25. didn't make it after all...bummer...im in huntsville, but couldn't get the family to go out on a rainy night...oh well..
