  1. I also post regularly at Brewerscubs.com. Its not as family friendly as here or as moderated, but I like the group of posters there too. Its not for everyone though. Sort of a cross between Brewerfan and ESPN's boards.
  2. As an example of how everyone find success differently, I actually do better switching out a portion of vegetables for meat. Or even better if its carbs for meat. Anyway, instead of the eat less advice, I think what most here are trying to say is burn more calories than you take in. That is the general rule for sure. Next, you can start looking at how those calories are divided up among protein/carbs/fats for your individual goals. I will just say that I don't think its a good idea to just try to lose weight. If you maintain or add muscle while losing fat, it will keep your metabolism up. If you just lose weight, eventually it will get harder and harder to drop pounds.
  3. Hart gets 4.8 mil while averaging 0.95 wins the last two years. Rodriguez gets 5 mil while averaging 3.35 wins the last two years. I know its a simple way to look at it, but the difference in performance is pretty obvious while the difference in salaries is nonexistant.
  4. Vonn is the strongest women's skier I have ever seen. She can mess up with her upper body and just carve through mistakes that cause other women to fall or get off their line. Her center of gravity is unreal for a woman. (note: this isn't sexist. women are just built different than men when it comes to skiing which is why its amazing she can use mens skies so well).
  5. One thing that hasn't been said in this thread (among a ton of other great advise) is that what works for me may not work for you. Some general guidelines have been posted, but everyone's genetics are different. Also, some have said to eat less and you will lose weight. Remember, your maintenance calories are affected by your metabolism and the amount of energy you expend during the day. So you could potentially eat the same amount you have in the past, but lose weight by just working out. If you eat less and work out though you are going to get much better results. Anyway, some rambling here but I hope it helps someone. As others have said, I could post on here for a while from things I have learned. Of course, I know next to nothing compared to some out there.
  6. Besides Utah, it seems like we always get screwed on the tv coverage of the Alpine events. Besides the world cup, olympic skiing is my favorite event to watch on tv. Really any HD skiing is fantastic to me.
  7. No, no chance. From the article: Officials said the complexities of building in old, downtown streets as well as project enhancements have driven up the cost.Townes and Williams said a number of factors have contributed to the increased costs. Several aspects of the project have been enhanced, including safety and security elements, passenger stations, the design of the storage and maintenance building, park-and-ride lots and landscaping. Additionally, the challenges of embedding tracks in the streets of downtown have proven costly, in terms of both money and time. A key issue has been relocating underground utilities and the delays that work has caused. Working in old cities is hell. You bid out the projects as best you can, but then uncover a bunch of utilities that were never accounted for, and it happens all the time. It also sounds as though they have added a lot of work on the project for stations and such. The vast majority of this project is in a rural setting and in current RR right-of-way. They won’t have any problems with utilities and are dealing with known quantities. It is completely different from what is happening in Norfolk. Ironically, Norfolk has a population of 234,220; 80th largest city in the US. Madison is 81st with a population of 231,916. Milwaukee is 23rd at 604,477 and yet it has no light rail and very limited commuter rail options. Just another reason why this area is perfect for this project. I see you still haven't looked at this at all objectively.
  8. I think Braun should be kept in cryogenic stasis during the offseason. It is irresponsible of him to age during the offseason and frankly it makes me sick. He should have also been issued safety scissors on draft day and learned all about stranger danger.
  9. I am a huge fan of both. Grew up all things Badgers, then went to Marquette. As a result, I follow both teams pretty intently but for head to head I have to go with MU. Other states are totally different though. For example, I have yet to meet someone from Mich who likes both Mich and MSU. If Mich is eliminated from something, a Mich fan will never root for MSU and vice versa. Maybe it would be different in WI if MU and UWM were in the same conference.
  10. Weren't they planning to show the Men's Downhill before the weather delays? I think the ski jumping was done yesterday so without any programing they probably decided to show the taped event. Hard to blame NBC for the weather.
  11. Fair enough. I feel bad if you skipped the entire opening ceremonies just because of this, but it certianly is your option to do so. If you missed it, they acknowledged the luger several times and NBC made reference to the tragedy many times and very respectfully. In terms of the physics aspect of steel beams vs plexiglass, you guys are looking at it all wrong. The material has nothing to do with it...its all about angle of deflection. To get a little nerdy, if you have a sharp turn, all of the tangents should be covered by a surface that would be hit at a low angle if someone were to fly off. If a wall of plexiglass (or even diamonds) were running along side, the body would hit it at a low angle and be projected back onto the track. Hitting a beam at 90 degrees is going to cause you to lose all your speed and kill you. Its no different than putting guardrail along a curved road when there are trees behind it. If you car smashes into a tree at a high angle, you are going to be hurt. If you car runs into that guardrail at a low angle, it bends about 2 feet back before spitting you onto the road again with just a scrape along your car. If the guardrail was designed wrong and you somehow managed to hit it at 90 degrees it could still kill you. So anyway, something guardrail like along the finish of that turn could really protect the riders. When building the coarse I doubt they took a safe clear distance into account for putting up beams or other immovable objects though. Still, I am sure the guy who designed that and the guy who built it feel terrible right now.
  12. I watched the Opening Ceremony until they interviewed Shaun White about snowboarding tricks. I mean, a guy DIED today, and we're supposed to enjoy hearing White laugh about his halfpipe tricks? I had to turn it off at that point. Should they cancel the games? I can understand being upset the footage was shown (I haven't actually seen it) but there are other events and the games are about a lot more than one person however tragic his passing may be. The White interview was really interesting to me, as he has basically been the best at his sport for years and has won everything. He expects to win every time he suits up, and when he does its almost routine. That being said, he was balling 4 years ago when he won the gold. Also, count me in as someone who is excited for the midnight curling. I got hooked on that sport when I was up in Banff during the Brier a couple years back. Prince Edward island really stuck it to Labrador that year.
  13. With regards to Hart this season, that couldn't possibly be more incorrect.
  14. It seems much more likely he will learn magic than learn to hit that outside slider. Here's to Corey and the black arts!http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  15. I love when people answer their own questions with sweeping generalizations. I think the majority of posters here understand how the Arby system is "supposed" to work and are upset that it didn't work as intended in this case. Hart's performance compared to his contemporaries means he should be making around 60% of 3-4 million. That, in theory, is how the system is supposed to work. Every couple of years though it gets thrown out of wack by someone like Ryan Howard and this year Hart and Lincecum. FA salaries have decreased due to the economy. In theory, Arby salaries should have done the same. They haven't and now there is no advantage for a team to build from within when they can get a couple of stand in FAs with no long term commitment. I agree with those who would like to cut Hart. Dye would be a much better player, or even Gerut for the year. There are plenty of young guys coming up who I expect to out perform Hart after this season so you wouldn't be hurting yourself long term either. Hopefully Hart proves me wrong, but until he can hit the steady diet of outside sliders he will be getting for the rest of his career, I don't see that happening. Also, this is a lot of money to be spending on one of the worst RFers in baseball for a team who admittedly has no flexibility in terms of payroll going into the season.
  16. So Hart should have gotten 60% of what he would have been worth on the open market...maybe around $2 mil. And 700k makes no difference? That could very well be the difference between adding a RP at the trade deadline for a playoff run.
  17. Try traveling from Waukesha or Oconomowoc to Grafton/Cedarburg sometime... Thats exactly what I was saying earlier in this thread. Hwy 60 is too far north in my mind for the completed bypass. I agree that Brown Deer Rd would have been perfect though. Oh well, too little too late. The 12/24/69 article states that they would have been displacing around 10,000 middle class residents. Is that as high of a number as it sounds? That's like obliterating the entire city of St Francis, plus an extra 1,500 people. Wow, that seems really hard to believe. Even today I wouldn't have expected that many people if they put the highway around Brown Deer Rd or even Hwy 60 (if they snaked it around Grafton).
  18. But back in the 60s they were eminent domaining the hell out of a lot of people. Better to do it then when that area wasn't so built up. I mean, all of those freeways would have been a little ridiculous considering MKE's population didn't increase like Chicago's did, but a bypass has been a necessary part of a modern city since the 50s and 60s. Wherever they were planning to do it, I wish it had gone through. Obviously it will never be done now. Ironically, eminent domain is actually pretty easy right now. The interchange I am working on is going to be taking some houses and the people can't wait for the government to bail them out of their mortgages. It makes the public meetings a lot easier, thats for sure. Anyway, I just wanted to draw a comparison to show that a lot of civil projects get negative press and have a lot of detractors. Hindsight is always 20/20 but its an engineer/planner's job to try and look at these projects from that perspective. Most others don't see it that way though. A lot of people think there is bias or some hidden agenda, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Its all about objectively figuring out what is best for the area and population you are serving right now and in the future.
  19. Sarcasm just doesn't work the same over the internet
  20. Yup, thats roughly the image I remember from school...I was blacked out most of that second semester senior year but that memory remains :-). Interesting quote from the first article you posted: According to Richard W. Cutler's book, "Greater Milwaukee's Growing Pains, 1950-2000: An Insider's View," he states it was "politically active residents" who "persuaded legislators at state, county and local levels to pass resolutions opposing the Bay Freeway." This is why I am glad they leave these decisions up to the engineers and planners more often than not these days. If you let tax payers vote on this stuff they wouldn't ever want to spend the money. Then 20 years later they would be upset it wasn't built. Its almost like the people doing this for a living actually know what they are doing. p.s. Has anyone read that book? Sounds interesting. Maybe I will get it for my dad for fathers day then steal it when he is finished reading. Milwaukee's history always interests me since its population has actually declined while most other cities have grown.
  21. Its actually funny you bring that up. In an urban planning class I had in school we learned about how messed up Milwaukee's freeway system is. In the '60s, SEWERPC originally planned to have a bypass around the city just like every other major city in the country. Most of it was built, but the line was never completed (41/45 was supposed to connect back to 43 somewhere around the county line). It was put up to a referendum when the system was nearing completion and people just didn't want to spend the money. Now Milwaukee is the classic example used to teach students how not to plan a city. Sounds kinda familiar to the rest of this thread.
  22. But what about the cost of the plane tickets to Florida, the hotel rooms, the rental car, food and drink? Maybe they make Gord, the lawyers, and the Brewer's negotiator shack up in 1 room with a twin bed. Ketchup sandwiches for lunch and dinner should also help. I bet they had to road trip down there in an '80s Geo Metro.
  23. That would actually be every single MLB team. Someone out there will want him to play first or DH and be able to pay more than the Brewers.
