  1. Everytime any team's offense goes into a funk, the people who follow them say it's because they aren't good at manufacturing runs. Earl Weaver said it best: "If you play for one run that's all you'll get."
  2. McGehee's best value is as a 2B, but he has caught almost 100 minor league games, the majority of those in the upper levels. He's sort of Vinnie Rottino two years ago. These guys have a very narrow window of opportunity to make a major league club. McGehee's making the best of what may be his only chance. If he really is a plus defender at 3rd maybe he could develop in a sort of right handed Cirillo or Koskie type.
  3. I was perplexed this winter that the media unanimously hailed the Bradley signing as a smart move. He's had 10 years of major league service but only twice has he surpassed the miminum plate appearances for a batting title. Last year was one of those seasons because he had 415 plate appearances as a DH. Because of injuries and suspensions he's been a parttime player his entire career. It was a stupid move for the Cubs. He's not a $10 million a year player. Not one media type called them out for this.
  4. From April 24th to June 5th he put up a line of .276/.368/.390/.758 and was hitting the ball well pretty consistently. That is 6 weeks and not 2.5. He slumped for the first 2 weeks and he slumped the last week, he has slumped for about 21 games on the season and was hitting well for 34. This is misleading. Check baseball-reference.com's game logs for Hardy. From Opening Day through April 30th he hit ..156/.224/.286. In the 19 games between May 3rd and May 27, he hit .348/.439/.551. In 15 games since the May 27th game he has hit .105/.188/.105. I'm willing to believe BAbip is playing a big role in his season, but for whatever reason his offense has been offensive so far this season.
  5. He's quietly been on a hot streak in June. .306 average, .405 obp. Just sayin.......
  6. The Cubs offense is terrible so far. I don't think one guy coming off the DL changes that significantly. Theriot is the only one giving one giving good production for his position. Well, Fukudome is pretty solid, I suppose. They are 14th in runs scored, 11th in obp, 10th in slugging. It's possible Lee, Soto, Soriano, etc kick it into high gear in the heat of summer and they really take off. It's just as possible Hardy, Hart, Gamel, and Cameron start hitting too. It's a very tight division but I still think the Brewers have the best all around team.
  7. Bingo. Last year we learned these hitters were a little too heavy on the free swinging hacktastic. Prince and Rickie are the only two who have shown a natural ability for getting on base that isn't overly dependent on batting average. Under Sveum, Rickie and Prince appear to have improved, Braun has made tremendous improvement. Sveum's more patient approach has resulted in 6th best obp in the league, up from 10th last year. The bottom line is Hardy, Hall, and Kendall have been terrible this year. Hart has been in a deep slump for a month, but appears to be breaking out. He is only 6 walks shy of matching last year's total, so if he can get his average back up, he'll be a more valuable hitter with the better plate discipline. I'd rather have a hitting coach that preaches discipline than one like the Orioles' Terry Crowley who talks incessantly about expanding the strike zone and putting the ball in play.
  8. It's the Brewers division to lose. They're trying like heck to do just that.
  9. What happened to Chase Wright?
  10. Completely agree. There are very few games in his career where the team didn't have a chance to win.
  11. One of my favorites is the game Alex Sanchez was thrown out for the cycle.
  12. If Parra can't get it together you're gonnna see Bedard in a Brewers uniform right after the 4th of July.
  13. Pittsburgh is over .500 when they aren't playing the Brewers. The Brewers and Cardinals are the only teams that are of equal strength with both pitching and hitting. Cincy and Chicago have weak offenses, but good pitching so far. I expect Houston to fall off a cliff in the heat of summer.
  14. I wonder if this is a conscious effort to improve his plate discipline. Two years ago his walk rate was 6.3%, last year 8.3%, this year. 9.6%. His "strikes looking" are up to 41% vs. 35% last year. However, his strikeout rate is lower. His contact rate is the same. All those batting stats at baseball-reference.com show his 2009 as consistent with 2008 except for these I've mentioned. And except for his very low BAbip. All this lends credence to those who are saying he's hitting the ball hard, just right at defenders.
  15. Or, he might still be providing stability and consistency in the lead off spot, hitting, getting on base, and making life easier for everyone else, thus avoiding some of these slumps. Obviously, no way to know for sure. I honestly do not believe the 1+ rpg difference is mere coincidence. Unlike the "slumpers" Weeks was actually hitting better as the season progressed. I agree with you, the run difference since his injury is no coincidence. They miss his bat. His OPS leading off an inning was .849. Batting with no outs, .860; with one out, .885; with 2 outs, .817. I realize the small sample size caveat applies, but clearly Rickie was making things happen and probably on his way to a career year.
  16. McGehee is getting better with more playing time, while Counsell is getting worse. The season started with everybody but Kendall and Hardy hitting. Even Counsell. So, I suppose if Weeks were healthy he might be slumping too. I'm OK with McGehee playing most days at 2B. Hopefully Gamel will warm up with more playing time. It may be time to sit Hart more.
  17. I think Hardy is best suited batting 2nd or 5th. I'll take Cameron over Hart in the 5 slot though. Even hitting .227 Cameron's obp during this slump is .350-ish. And his power numbers are as good as Hart's or better at this point. It makes sense to go to lefty Gamel batting 6th. Unfortunately it's going to be difficult for Hart to break out his slump batting 7th ahead of Kendall.
  18. Wow, it's amazing how quick things appear to change. At game 50 this year, they were 30-20. In 2008 they were 23-27. That's a huge difference. A bad 10 game stretch has clouded the season a bit. I think they are starting to miss Weeks. Or at least the performance Weeks was giving them this year. The current 2B platoon has done pretty well, about league average, but it's a big dropoff from Weeks.
  19. You were not in the sun, before they closed it were you? Otherwise, it could be that they closed the roof due to an approaching storm and the outisde temp dropped when the storm got there. I do know what you mean about the lack of airflow, even with the roof open. I think they should have made some of the windows on the 1st and 3rd base sides openable, like the outfield panels. On warm days the park is too enclosed, even when it is open. It was really humid that evening so it's possible a front was moving and that's why they closed the roof. I was a game against Baltimore last year when they opened the roof during the game. The day was overcast but the skies cleared by late afternoon.
  20. You do know there is no A/C...why would you want it closed. The hot days when it is closed due to rain are the worst. I've noticed with the roof closed that there is more ventilation in some areas than other. For instance, it seems to me there is less in the outfield loge and field levels than there is in the seats on those levels that are behind the plate. Honestly, I didn't know that! A few years back I was at a sold out game against the Twins. Outside temperature at 6 PM was in the low 90's and and very humid. I must have sweated out 15 pounds the first two innings. Sometime in the middle innings they closed the roof and the place instantly got more comfortable. I figured it was due to air conditioning! We were on the field level up from the 3rd base dugout.
  21. Cameron is more a case of regressing to his mean after a hot start. On May 3rd he was hitting 321/408/655. No one expected him to maintain that pace. In his 110 at bats since then he's only hitting .227, but his OPS is .762. So he's able to still contribute even when the hits aren't falling. If he had 5 more hits in those 110 at bats he'd be hitting .272.
  22. Actually, he had a hot streak of 13 games and has been pretty bad the rest of the season.
  23. I wish they'd close the roof when the temperature approaches 90. On games I've been to with the roof open I've noticed there is no breeze in there. Pack 35,000 people in there and you can't breathe on hot days.
  24. It's possible the question of which core players to keep and which to discard is solving itself this year. Some talented players are able to maintain a high level of play for the balance of their careers. Many more are not. So while it's disappointing to see Hart, Hall and Hardy struggling, it's possible they have peaked as players. I'm not ready to say this is true of Hardy, but it may well be of Hart and Hall. After all, Hardy was arguably the best position player on the team last year. It's doubtful he suddenly just lost it. But it's possible Braun, Fielder, and Weeks are the only hitters worth paying for.
  25. Picking numbers on a month by month basis is a readily available, handy way to look at a player's streakiness. But it's also arbitrary. JJ's hot streak in May was really a 13 game stretch from May 3-21, where he hit 340/400/560 over 55 plate appearances. Since then he's hit .130/.196/.127 over 51 plate appearances.
