  1. Probably the best pitchers available are a healthy Dave Bush and Good Command Manny Parra.
  2. Last 10 games the Brewers have scored 47 runs and given up 47 runs. Surprise! They are 5-5 through that span. They have been shutout twice and in two other losses scored 1 and 2 runs respectively. The only loss where they scored more than 2 runs was the Cubs opener when they scored 5 well after the game was already lost. I find Braun's openess refreshing, but in this instance he's a bit out of line blaming the pitching staff. Every pitching staff struggles with injuries and ineffectiveness at some point in the season. The truth is the offense has been terrible for some time now, except for McGehee, Prince and Braun. He should be challenging his fellow hitters to play better instead of calling out the pitchers. He should be saying something like, "I know our pitching is struggling somewhat right now, but it's our job as hitters to pick them up. We haven't been doing that."
  3. I think it will be a long weekend for Brewers fan..... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  4. 43 points added to his OPS. From .634 to .677
  5. He has started 4 of the last 9 games at 3B. He's pinch hit in 3 of the other games. He is getting regular playing time. There is nothing wrong with bringing a young player along in this fashion. Especially one who isn't exactly setting the world on fire with his bat. I doubt he will start against Santana tonight, but will probably be out there against Pelfrey on Wednesday.
  6. And in fairness, his health this year may due to playing 1B. If he was playing 3B most days for the Brewers he may not have held up as well. To his credit he hasn't had a single at bat as a DH. fwiw, I wasn't leaving Gamel out of the equation for 2009. But one goal of the team I believe is to break the pattern of rushing young players. Gamel is the best option at 3b now, but a full season in AAA wouldn't have hurt him had Branyan been on the team this year.
  7. This is what hurts the most. No Bill Hall and Russell is the starting 3B this year and the much needed 2nd lefty bat in the lineup.
  8. If you're comparing ERA matchups the difference isn't that great. Of course that probably mean you can't trust ERA, especially when McClung has yet to start a game and Burns has only started one.
  9. I always thought so. I think this is why you can feel a cooler breeze on your back when the close the roof mid game. The cool air rushes down the seating.
  10. The isolated incident he's referring to is failing the drug test! "While I admit to starting each day blowing a doobie, I want to assure my fans and my family that failing the drug test was an isolated incident..."
  11. Going into last night's game the offense had average 4.85 runs in June.
  12. I agree Hall would probably play a little better on another team. Oftentimes that's a temporary thing. Also, he may be more willing to accept a reduced role on another team with a fresh start, then on the Brewers. There's a certain amount of pride and psychology involved. If my boss asks me to take a pay cut I may be upset and quit, then accept another job for less pay.
  13. If this turns into a 10 game losing streak I agree. But in fairness to Melvin this is a team that was in 1st place every day but one from May 13th to June 19th. Through the first two months of the season they led MLB in % of quality starts, the bullpen was nothing short of spectacular, the defense vastly improved, and the offense plenty good despite some glaring weaknesses. So their last 20 games they are 7-13, nothing short of ugly, but also the sort of funk every team is capable of during a long season. A GM can't panic due to a 15-20 game slide. He has made some moves; bringing up Gamel, sending down Parra, adding Gerut and Cat to the bench.. They are still in 2nd, 2 games out of 1st. The starting pitching has been bad, but the team is not in a free fall. 6 of the 13 losses have been by 1 run. Another loss by just 2. The offense is averaging 4.85 runs over those 20 games. The bullpen has been OK. Last night notwithstanding, the defense remains solid. As a GM you have to figure the rotation wasn't as good as it looked the first two months and it's not as bad as it looks right now. Certainly Doug should be putting out feelers and considering options, but I don't think it he's wrong to let this month play out a bit and see if this slide will correct itself.
  14. Ah, but I would rather see McGehee vs LHP than Hall.
  15. I bet McClung starts on Saturday. He's been pitching about every 3 games which would schedule him for an appearance on Friday.
  16. I don't think there is a trading partner for Hall. Maybe San Diego for Brian Giles, he has a no trade, I believe. If they DFA him, he'll get claimed by Pittsburgh or some team like that. His only hope at this point is a change of scenery. I'd rather have Iribarren up here at this point.
  17. JJ is batting .333/.400/.476 in his last 6 games. There has been at least one lengthy topic here on JJ's poor hitting. Bill Hall 2007-2009 is hitting .233/.297/.398. That's over 1140 plate appearances. He does have 34 home runs over that period, but he's been striking out in 30% of his at bats and walking less than 10% of the time. Two years ago I wrote he was the next Deivi Cruz. I was right. Except Deivi didn't strike out anywhere near this rate.
  18. Ok gotcha. Then we are on the same page.
  19. Counting his 2-1/3 innings in the playoffs, he pitched a total of 168 1/3rd innings in 2008. I don't think you can accuse the Brewers of abusing him last year. In fact, when he appeared fatigued late in the year they basically shut him down for the season.
  20. His obp is 82 points higher than his batting average. If he goes 3 fer 3 with a double in his next 3 at bats, he's hitting .270/.370/435. .805 OPS. Unless he's hitting under .100 or something, it's silly to fret over this when he hasn't even had 100 at bats.
  21. Sports journalists make crap up all the time because, for all intents and purposes, they hold no accountability. Journalists in other fields often let their opinions shine through of course, but at some point they have to back up what they say with either quotes from an expert or some level or research. Sports are a form of entertainment, and like most entertainment journalism, their basic goal is to come up with opinions, regardless of any merit.
  22. Riding it out is probably the smartest move for the organization. The Orioles have several young pitchers who are doing quite well and moving through the system pretty fast. They haven't had a ss in two years. Waiting until the offseason to see if Hardy can be moved to a team like the O's for some of that pitching is going to better long term. I am not ready to say Suppan and Looper are 5 ERA pitchers this year, or Bush and Parra are done. Most pitchers go through a dead arm or fatigue period over the course of the year. The Brewers are still one game better at this point than they were last year. At 69 games last year they were 8.5 back and in 3rd place. While their poor month is a concern, it's not time to write off the season or assume things will continue to erode. There's a lot of baseball left to play.
  23. I don't know why we should expect Suppan to regress. His numbers and rates are right at his career numbers. Bush's ERA was in the mid 4's until his last horrible start. He'll get it back down. He and Looper have been a bit shaky lately but the team has been facing some pretty good offenses in June. I am somewhat worried about Yovani's control lapse the last couple of games. They definitely need Parra back at his 2008 summer level, or another starter who can provide similar performance.
  24. He is already playing everyday. Since June 5th he's appeared in all 12 games and has started 9 of them. A young player doesn't need to start every day to get experience. Few rookies do. Hardy started only 104 games his rookie season. Prince started 151 his rookie year. The important thing is that a good young player be given regular playing time. Gamel is getting regular playing time. Over the course of this month he has become the regular 3rd baseman. Like Hardy during his rookie season, they need to keep giving Gamel regular playing time, starting him most games and be patient. His bat will come around. Like most players it will probably take more than 80 plate appearances.
