  1. I'd trade Escobar, Gamel, and any two other top prospects for Peavy. He is essentially under contract for the next 5 seasons (counting the 2013 club option).
  2. I think the farm system strength is thanks to Paul DePodesta and the bad contracts mostly due to Ned "everything I know I learned from Brian Sabean" Colletti.
  3. Boy I don't see that at all. Not to hijack the thread or anything, but essentially what they've done is replace Mussina/Pettitte/Abreu/Giambi, with CC/Burnett/Teixeira/Swisher. I'd be curious to know what the difference in 2008 VORP is between the two groups. Bet it's not as much as the "pundits" want you to believe. Much of CC's value over Mussina's in 2008 can be explained by his move to a new league that hadn't faced him much before. His 1.65 ERA in Milwaukee was half his ERA each of his previous two seasons in Cleveland and a full two runs less than his career ERA. They are a mediocre defensive team at best. Other than Tex and ARod the rest of the offense is remarkably average. They were 7th in the league in runs scored. They were 8th in team ERA. They only won 89 games last year, and it took a 17-9 September to reach that number. Their pythagorean w/l was 87-75. I doubt they are the 4th best team in AL. They might be the 4th best team in AL East, though. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  4. I think there's a less than zero chance Sheets is a Brewer in 2009.
  5. He would hit a lot of home runs the Cincy ballpark.
  6. It's hard for me to jump on the Dawson bandwagon too. Jim Rice had a career OPS of .920 at Fenway and .789 everywhere else. He's not the worst player elected and certainly brings no shame to HOF. Some old crappy writers are just never going to vote for Blyleven because they see this as a war between the "old guard" standards like 20/300 wins and world series rings, versus today's more objective and accurate player analysis.
  7. JP Ricciardi was on Hot Stove last week. He denied trying to trade Halladay. He did however, talk a lot about 2010, as though he'd signed off 2009 already. He hasn't been given any money to spend for this season and two of his good young starters will miss a lot, if not all of 2009. So, if he is truly shopping Halladay I guess it would be to get payroll flexibility with an eye toward making a big run in 2010.

  10. I would probably trade anybody but Gallardo for Halladay.

  12. Hey Bill James used to do this, didn't he?

  14. No matter what offer Doug makes, Boras will get on the phone to the Mets and Braves and give them a chance to counter offer.
  15. Last year's Baseball Prospectus preseason book theorized Cameron escaped bad press for his 25 game suspension because he's well liked by players and beat reporters.
  16. Here's the real question of the day: When he's inducted in the HOF will he wear a Brewers cap or a Padres cap?
  17. Since 8 homers are easy to look up, I think it bears looking at them a bit. In April Hoffman gave up two dingers, one to Berkman and one to Benji Molina. In May he gave up one to Dunn. On June 24th he gave up a homer each to Brian Buscher and Brendan Harris. His very next outing, June 29th, he gave up a dinger to Jeff Clement. His very next outing, July 5th in Arizona, he gave up one to Stephen Drew. That was it for the year until Cameron hit one out of Petco on August 14th. Really, we're talking about 3 bad outings in a row where he gave up 4 homers. After that July 5th game he finished the year making 19 appearances, 14 saves, one blown, 17ip, 3BB, 14K's, 1.56 ERA. He had a slow first half, then was his old self the last half of the season.
  18. Isn't it just as likely that about every hitter outside of Hardy overperformed previous to last year? I'm not saying I disagree with you, I felt like the core offense players underperformed last year too. But really, is it smart to assume Braun and Fielder are 150+ *OPS+ hitters as they were in 2007, and not 128's, as they were in 2008? Or Corey Hart is a consistent 126 *OPS+ guy like he was in 2007? Or that Weeks is something more than a league average OPS guy? Isn't it just as likely these were exceptionally mature hitters for their age when they arrived in the Milwaukee and now the league has caught up to them?
  19. Using the Cott's baseball site I count $40.045 million that is committed for 2009. Of course that doesn't count one year deals for pre arby players that must be renewed, or any arbitration eligible players. In 2008 they entered the season right around $80 million.
  20. Looking back, paying Gagne $10 million was overpaying. I don't think this is. I think it's reasonable to expect 35 saves and very few 9th inning blow ups.
  21. T.H reporting the deal is sealed: http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/37268769.html
  22. I know a bar in our area did that last year. The owner limited seating on the bus and raised his rate a bit, but then also had several bus trips throughout the season. As I recall he also sold tickets outright for some games and ended up making his initial investment back and then some. It was a lot to put up front though.
  23. I think the Orioles should trade Roberts, who some teams think is a GREAT player, then sign Orlando to a 2 or 3 year deal.
