  1. I love that tag line. Melky Cabrera, just a guy. He was always just a guy. But since he played for the Yankees, he had to be billed as FUTURE STAR. Check his minor league and major league numbers. He's Corey Paterson without the speed or power.
  2. If I were Doug hiring a new manager I'd tell the guy Maddux WILL be the pitching coach, and recommend retaining any other coaches I thought did a good job. However, I'd leave the actual selection up to the manager.
  3. Shields is pretty good. The Rays would be nuts to trade him!
  4. I wouldn't trade him unless I was getting a GREAT pitcher for him. If, say the Brewers had a chance to get Roy Halladay for the next two years, you put any player on the table, save for Yo, Parra, and Braun.
  5. Isn't Blalock going to be a free agent anyway? The Rangers have him for an option year in 2009. $6.25 million or a $250K buyout. I'm betting they buy him out and let him go.
  6. Color me dismayed over the Macha hating on this topic. There is precious little evidence he is an incompetent boob or strategically inept. On the other hand there seems to be lots of negative criticisms out there directed toward Brenly and Randolph. Those two just seem horrible to me. I have no idea if Macha is a genius; but it seems the appropriate response to him being hired should be indifference at worst, reserved judgement at best.
  7. I think it's pretty wishful to expect a big season from a player who only walked 27 times in 652 plate appearances.
  8. Well, Macha has been a successful at several levels. Here's a bit from his wiki bio: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Macha The '97 Pawtuckets were 81-60, 2 games out of 1st place in their division. Suppan was on that team. In '98 they were 77-64. Shouse was on that team. By '99 he was coaching for A's under Art Howe.
  9. While Hart's value was much higher last year, I am suspicious his value will continue to go down. He's never had particularly good plate discipline.
  10. I'm a big fan of DeJesus, so would love to see him batting leadoff, then Weeks-Braun-Fielder-Hardy. KC has said they want to find more power from the OF. I'd try to work out something that sends Hart there for DeJesus as centerpieces to a trade. Use a platoon again at 3rd, keep Cameron. If part of the 3B platoon is Lamb or Branyan, then you'd have 3 lefties in the lineup most days.
  11. You are right about Church. He has two more years of arby to go through.
  12. $10 million is a lot to spend for a guy who should at best be your 6 or 7 hitter. But sometimes there is a practical side to a dilemma. A team has a finite source of capital and time to fix holes and improve during the offseason. Doug's plate is pretty full. Hire a manager, scouting director, determine what if anything to offer CC and Sheets, address 3B, find another lefty or two in the lineup, find replacements for CC and/or Sheets, re-tool the bullpen. Declining Cameron's option adds another task to an already daunting list. Accepting the option seems like the simplest course of action, giving Doug more time to work on the serious issues. Especially when there is no guarantee the Crew can find someone who can match Cameron's numbers and defense. This is a team that won 90 games and had the 2nd best record in the league for much of the year. They don't have to blow up the team. Better to make a couple really smart moves that add 4-5 wins than do wholesale makeovers.
  13. I believe Ryan Church is a free agent. Seems like a Church/Kapler platoon would replace Hart. Meanwhile Hart could be part of a package that improves the rotation.
  14. Yes, that's exactly the point. I don't understand why people can't see that. If Hart was part of a deal for a good 3B or another quality young starter, you could replace him with a platoon of Kapler and someone like Ryan Church and end up with similar or better production.
  15. Agreed. Well said, no need for me to repeat. I grew up an Orioles fan when The Oriole Way was the premier baseball philosophy. It seemed every successful organization in MLB had for Oriole executives in their front office, and former coaches and players managing, or coaching.
  16. I like the idea of monitoring Gamel closely at AAA, then bringing him up once they are comfortable with his defense. That leaves you with Hall/Branyan and Mike Lamb, who iirc, they can keep next year and the Twins pay his salary.
  17. Checking out his bio at wikipedia; he's been successful at every level as a manager. Where is the documentation that he has a personality issue? I know after he was fired some players, including Kendall, threw him under the bus, but this is a team that also included Milton Bradley, Jay Payton, and Frank Thomas; 3 guys who haven't always carried the best reputation as teammates. Macha's A's won 93 games in 2006. In 2007 Bob Geren's team, essentially the same roster minus Zito, won only 76 games. Frankly, I don't give a crap if the players don't like their manager. This is the real world, not middle school. You either perform or you don't stick around the league very long.
  18. I guess I should have said he "imtimated" he wouldn't be back. I'm not suggesting he wants to leave, only that he sensed there was no chance anything could work out. He's one of my favorite Brewers and pitchers of all time.
  19. Hart is the only player I'd consider trading. Weeks and Hall don't have enough value. Fielder, Braun, Hardy, Parra, and Yo are the centerpiece of the team, make affordable salaries, and would each create gaping holes if traded. Down the line, maybe as early as next offseason, Fielder and Hardy may have to go. But for now, trading them will not make the team better.
  20. Hasn't Sheets said all year he won't be back? I'd take him at a 2 or 3 year deal, but I think the pressure will be on him take a longer deal.
  21. I happened to be at this game in L.A. This was the best play i have ever seen. The you tube footage seems to take some of the real time speed off the catch. He is basically in the second row stealing a HR. Well goes to show defense is best appreciated in person. Kudos to Kapler!
  22. Wonderful play by Kapler, but it didn't seem that spectacular.
  23. Abreu would be quite a nice pickup. Baldelli will be a free agent as well, although he is right handed. I started this topic under the premise replacing a corner OF'er would be easier to do than replacing an All Star caliber ss or 1B. So just trading Hart for another RF'er would sort of disprove my premise. I doubt Jeremy Guthrie is available, but it would probably be better to package him in a deal for Guthrie, or some other quality pitcher.
  24. He hardly ever walks, strikes out a lot for non power hitter, and is right handed. Don't we already have a lineup full of these types? My guess is he would hit about .375 in April then .215 the rest of the way, once the league figures out he's going to swing at every pitch. I am tired of the lack of plate discipline on this team. Leave him in AAA for 2009, or trade him if he helps to bring another starting pitcher to the team.
  25. Interesting idea. Hermida sure regressed this year though. People would think Melvin was nuts to do a straight up trade.
