  1. Why can't the Brewers have Raul Ibanez?
  2. He still reminds me of Schilling. A couple injury years, then a run of healthy seasons and lookout. Here's the thing: aren't 2005 and 2006 related to the same injury? Wasn't 2005 when he had surgery on the shoulder blade and 2006's DL stint a result of scar tissue build up from that surgery? And last year was a broken finger, wasn't it? I don't consider broken bones as qualifiers for an "injury prone" tag. He was worked pretty hard in seasons 2-4. Having lighter loads for seasons 5-7, when he was still in his mid-20's may have saved his arm a bit. But it's worrisome he's injured his elbow now. Previous to that you could argue his injuries weren't career threatening or the type that could turn chronic. Except for 2006 when he was coming off the shoulder surgery, it's always been reasonable to expect him to be fully healthy every season. Now with the elbow problem I don't know.....
  3. Every MLB game should be a pitching matchup between Peavy and Sheets. The actual games would be shorter than those condensed rebroadcasts on FSN. I agree baseball is not a strong TV sport. Only crazed fans like us can watch an entire game on TV on a regular basis. The field dimensions are all wrong for TV aspect ratios and the action tends to be one player doing something, contact and interaction is rather minimal. Football and basketball are perfect for TV; in fact I think they are better on TV than actually attending the games. I think this is the main reason football is more popular than baseball; it's popularity rose with the rise of television. Baseball is the perfect sport to enjoy in person on a warm summer day or night. It's pace is leisurely, encouraging conversation, people watching, hot dog eating, and beer drinking.
  4. While I understand the stereotype that Sheets is injury prone, it really isn't true. In 8 seasons he's averaged just under 28 starts and 180 ip per season. I'm curious how many pitchers can match that over the same period? Halladay has average 28 starts, 197ip. Peavy, 28 starts, 157 ip (over last 7 years), Oswalt 30 starts. 202 ip. Zito is Ben's age and has averaged 34 starts, 214+ innings pitched. He also hasn't been any good for the last two years. Anyway, my point is, among pitchers roughly his age who've been in the majors as long as he has, he compares pretty well as far as health goes. A non Brewer fan will look at his stats and see he's really only had one "lost" season, 2006. I think he'll get at least 5yr/$75 million from someone.
  5. I might be slow, but what did this have to do with the announcing of Macha as manager? Because Macha mentioned a story with Jay Payton. Saying that Payton asked Macha why he is not playing, so Macha told him because you have a low OBP and your not producing. He's already the best Brewer manager of the last 20 years! I think this is a great move. Macha's teams have won at every level he's managed. Here's hoping he takes the Brewers on a decade long run of success. Did I hear Melvin right? There are 12 free agents on this roster, so there will be a lot of turnover?
  6. Let him go. I admire him for willingly facing the press after his huge blowups early in the year and for his ticket giveaway at the end of the year. He did sorta come around in the last half of the season and proved useful. But he's priced himself out of job in Milwaukee.
  7. I wish they'd put it back up. I only caught the last two minutes.
  8. They did. I just caught the end of it....Don't know if they'll put it back up or not...
  9. Oh no! Not the World Baseball Classic! I hate that. The season is already too long. We need a commissioner who makes decisions that increase fan interest, not just one who kowtows to $$
  10. Good. Glad to see Doug is moving quick. There's too much to do to wait around and agonize over a manager.
  11. Wouldn't most pitching coaches look good if they were working with Maddux, Smoltz and Glavine? You can't have it both ways here. You say the Orioles had no pitching staff but that he should get credit for having those three with Atlanta.Mazzone made lots of unprofessional comments about Baltimore pitchers in his tenure and quickly wore out his welcome. Try to find a quote where he says something positive about his pitchers in Baltimore. His first season team ERA went up almost a run compared to the year before. Both of his seasons, team ERA was over 5. In his final season, only his second, he basically said the pitchers were bums and he couldn't be blamed for the poor perfomance. It may be the Oriole staff is a bunch of turds, but Mazzone came across as a grumpy old fart during his time there. I would hate to have him coach young pitchers.
  12. Milwaukee is the only place Bud is popular.
  13. Please, no. He was terrible in Baltimore.
  14. I watched parts of every game but the rain soaked one. Unless watching last night counts! I have ExtraInnings so will watch bits of pieces of several games on any given night. I'm an Orioles fan so will watch a lot of their games, along with most all Brewers' (on radio or TV). I thought the playoff schedule was ridiculous this year. I could never keep straight who was playing "tonight" or if there was even a game on. It was stupid to not have a World Series game on Friday night. I hate that during the LCS they had an off day between games 4 and 5. The playoffs are too long by a week. By the time the World Series starts people are done with baseball for the year.
  15. Yeah, that's encouraging.
  16. Well, if the Phillies win tonight we could get an announcement by the weekend...
  17. He's also played 93 minor league games at catcher and a handful at 1B, SS,and 2nd. Looks like Vinnie has some competition. Otherwise I agree; he's a young Joe Dillon without the power.
  18. Holliday made the jump from AA to the majors. His career minor league rates are .276/.349/.427 .776. That's pretty close to his road splits in the majors: .280/.348/455.
  19. As it is for Hardy.
  20. Could we add a rule to this topic that Counsell can't be included in any proposed roster?
  21. Word on the street he's been a terrible outfielder for several years. That stats, always suspicious on defense, don't bear that out. I don't want to turn this into a trade Corey Hart topic, but this is what I mean about the relative ease in replacing corner outfielders on a year by year basis. A platoon of Anderson and Kapler could be an adequate replacement if Doug had a good offer for Hart.
  22. Kendall liking or not liking someone had zero impact on Melvin getting someone. This isn't the NBA. Kendall is a 34 year old man. If he has a "problem" with his boss, well welcome to the real world, loser. I'm sure Kendall is professional enough to do his job without causing a ruckus. I suspect most of the problems with Mach and Art Howe before him in Oakland had to do with Billy Beane in the clubhouse before, during and after every game, treating each one like it's the 7th game of the World Series.
  23. Agreed. Hart will be 27 next year, the average age when hitters peak. It's when the combination of talent and major league experience intersect at the highest point. I understand why many want to keep him. But hitters like Hart tend to peak earlier, before age 27. Think Bill Hall or Deivi Cruz. That's because their free swinging, lunging, no adjustment approach doesn't get much benefit from experience. In fact, it's just the opposite. Because these types of hitters refuse to make adjustments to their approach, it's the opposing pitcher who benefits from the experience of facing the hitter. This is why I worry about Braun just a wee bit.
